"Night Train at Wiscasset Station" is a masterpiece. Lew Dietz's words, interspersed with Kosti Ruohomaa's photographs, paint a picture of a time gone by in a state that can be beautiful, haunting, desolate and welcoming all at the same time. I grew up in Maine, and this books makes me nostalgic for home. A must-read for anyone who's ever been touched by the state of mind that is Maine.

I didn't kow if I wante to laugh or cry, be horified or amused. The stories pulled me in as only a great storyteller can do. I knew the stories were not true, but they sounded true, they seemed true, and I began to belive them and started hoping they were not true! Every step in the stories are so resonable, it just might be true. Its easy to read but below the great characters and their tangled situations there is great meaning and thought. A delightfull book on many different levels

This was a delightful read recounting the adventures of a lady whose exuberence and delight in everything around her lifts our spirits and gives us a new perspective on everyday experiences. Nothing escapes her keen sensitivity and she expresses it with exuberant abandon. The recipes are delicious but, one soon forgets that it is a cookbook. Or is it? The best recipe in the book is the one Ms. Gamble gives us for living life every moment.

Thanks, Ms. Gamble, for the pleasure of your company

Every chapter in this delightful book is a small treasure; a happy and reassuring reminder in these hectic times that life's many little pleasures are all around us, just waiting for discovery. Elizabeth Gamble's adventures, as the book's title indicates, take us across continents and oceans -- and we lucky readers are always in wonderful company, and wherever we are, never far from hearth and home. So settle in to an easy chair and enjoy a sunny and optmistic read, then head for the kitchen with family and friends, try out a couple of the wonderful recipes, and thank Ms. Gamble for inviting us all along for a perfectly lovely time.

I read this book after my father, who lived in Somerset during his childhood, gave me the book as a gift and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My dad rode the Old Somerset Railroad regularly as a boy and Mr. Macdougall's anecdotes and stories, documenting the history of the railroad in northern Maine, put into perspective for me what it must have been like for my father to grow up in those times. Thank you Mr. Macdougall - I found your work both fascinating and informative.

Superbly written, magnificently presented railroad history.

Begun in 1872, the Somerset Railroad linked the Maine coast with Canadian businesses. For fifty-six years it carried people and goods from the north woods around Moosehead Lake to Southern Maine and New England. A legend in the annals of northeastern railroading, Walter Macdoughall's illuminative history, The Old Somerset Railroad: A Lifeline For Northern Mainers, employs and easy-reading anecdotal style as he surveys the railroad's construction, rolling stock, employees, and the ways in which the lives of the people living along the tracks became interwoven with this remarkable railroad. The Old Somerset Railroad is a superbly written and presented contribution to any personal, academic, or community library collection railroading histories.

Rare first-hand account of a strike and its aftermath

Review Date: 1999-11-30
The 1987-8 strike in Jay, Maine, was one of the most important labor struggles of the 1980s. As in other major strikes, a local union (with two others in AL and PA) tried to hold the line against the corporate offensive. Against extremely long odds, the strikers held their ground for what their values and their community. There simply are not many accounts of strikes that are written by workers themselves. The closest that most books come, like the Betrayal of Local 14--which is also quite good, rely on oral histories by sympathetic academics or journalists. If you want to know what it means to hold the line against corporate America for 16 months, and then get sold out by your own people, and still believe in unionism, this book is for you.

Truth in advertising: I helped work on the book (by getting it typed up and edited it for typos).

Eckstrom does an excellent job depicting 19th century life on the West Branch of the Penobscot River. She draws a vivid picture of the long days, harsh conditions, and undaunting pride which permeated the life of a river driver. The river landmarks are accurately described and can be visited today, nearly 100 years after the original publication date. This book is a must to read for anyone who visits the West Branch of the Penobscot River in Maine.

True Life Adventures of logging in Maine!

Are you looking for a terrific book of true adventure short stories? Fannie Eckstorm ran a bunk house in Bangor Maine at the turn of the century and tells us tales she heard from the loggers themselves. Penobscot Man is one of the most sought after books about the rough and tumble men that cut the white pines during Winter and drove them downriver to saw mills at Millinocket and Bangor during the Spring meltwater floods. So "put on your caulk boots, grab your peavy, and forget the meaning of fear", Penobscot Man will thrill your heart and you just might learn something too! This classic of American literature is currently out of print but allways in demand!

I agree with the first reviewer and did not want to put the book down. The story lines are excellent and made me aware of how difficult being a woman was 200 years ago and of how much progress we have made. It gave me a strong appreciation of the struggle women have had, and I highly recommend it to women of all ages. I can't wait until my college-age daughter reads it, so we can discuss it.

Pink Chimneys is one of those books you don't want to end!

I grew up in the Bangor area, and this book was a gift from my mother-in-law, who still lives in Maine.

I love historical novels, and I love stories about strong women. Pink Chimneys is an excellent example of both. I truly did not want to put it down.

The book devotes a section to each of three women. I read each section caught up in the life of that character and wanting to know more about her. While I was reading the section about Maude, I wanted to go on reading about her, not go on to the next person. However, while I was reading Fanny's section, I felt the same way about Fanny and wanted to know more about her. I felt the same way about Elizabeth.

I've already lent the book to a friend to read. Great book!

This is a wonderful book full of old pictures and trivia about Portland, Maine. Portland is the largest city in the state. If you have lived there or visited, the pictures and history are very thought provoking. So often, we don't stop in our busy lives to look back at the history of an area. Here, all of the legwork is done for us. Definitely a very interesting book for those with interest in the history of this old seaport city.

Beautiful Poetry From Michigan's Upper Penninsula...
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-22
Rosalie Petrouske hails from Michigan's Upper Penninsula, a gorgeous expanse of untamed wilderness subject to long, punishing winters and summers that seem to disappear before they can be savored. In many ways, Petrouske's poetry and imagery resembles the Upper Penninsula itself: Beautiful, often delightful, and sometimes tragic.

In this collection of poems, Petrouske focuses on the relationship between mothers and daughters through the eyes of a woman who fulfills both roles. This offers readers a unique insight into the thoughts and feelings of a woman who is making the transition from being a daughter to becoming a mother herself.

"A Postcard From My Mother" would be an excellent addition to the library of anybody who has experienced or would like to gain awareness of the inner workings of relationships between a mother and daughter.
