Truly "it is important for every person to know who they are and where they came from". This book delivers a love-of-land message in a unique and most engrossing style that grabs the reader and infuses pride of family and respect for home and land; heightened my awareness of heritage; made me want to share the book with my children and others I love. An excellent read for all ages; delightful from start to finish.

A must-have for Kentuckians and Bluegrass natives
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-14
The third in his series, James Archambeault manages to seek out more subjects sure to delight Kentuckians while capturing the traditional images that make our Bluegrass famous. From quaint towns, to forest settings, Archambeault puts on glossy paper what we love to remember from visits to Red River Gorge and Raven Run Nature Sanctuary and takes us to places we've never been, to festivals we didn't know occurred at the opposite end of the Commonwealth, and introduces us to people we might never meet. He points out red and black barns on winding country roads that we never stopped to notice, amidst cattle grazing on emerald grass fresh from seasonal rainstorms. But don't underestimate Archambeault--he will provide the reader the full Kentucky experience, taking him to the city of Louisville for the famous Derby at Churchill Downs, and to the central city of Lexington to experience Wildcat fever basketball. Whether you're a loyal fan of James Archambeault's work or browsing for an item that represents all the beauty that Kentucky has to offer, Archambeault once again lives up to his well-deserved reputation.

Kentucky Justice, Southern Honor, and American Manhood: Understanding the Life and Death of Richard Reid (Southern Biography Series)

A Tragedy in the Realm of Honor
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-08
James Klotter's sensitive portrayal of a post-Civil War controversy over a legal dispute demonstrates the powerful force of the southern code of honor that one might have thought dead given the humiliating southern defeat in war. In this case Kentuckian Richard Reid's refusal to avenge a thrashing by a disgruntled and half-mad loser in a law suit led to the downfall and death of this upstanding political leader. Reid had thus disgraced himself in the eyes of a truculent public. Klotter's work would make an excellent film--his narrative is vivid, sutble, and full of cultural meaning and depth.

Great Cookbook
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-03
This book is one of the best cookbooks I have ever seen. The recipes are simple and easy to make, not to mention delicious. They are very well compiled and organized and easy to read.

Not only do you get some of the best old fashioned recipes around, but there are some very interesting historical tidbits thrown in as well. This makes Kentucky Recipes a very interesting book to read, as well as to use for those delicious meals. I gave this book to my mother for Christmas, and it was like a walk down memory lane for her. She stopped frequently exclaiming that she has always used this recipe, or heard of that one, or had a relative who used to make certain things listed in the book, but had never seen it in print. She was thrilled. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who loves Southern Cooking, or wants to learn!

This great little book will make a wonderful gift or stocking stuffer for anyone from Kentucky, anyone interested in Kentucky, or anyone who has a keen interest in "adult beverages"! Joe Nickell brings the same method of meticulous research honed in investigating everything from weeping icons, haunted hotels, UFO sightings, and sleight-of-hand hoaxers to this charming and quintessentially Kentuckian drink. Way to go, Colonel Nickell!

This book by Henry Pirtle is a beautifully written book. It is hard to put down once you start reading it. It helps to clarify things that may have been hidden in the past. It is a wonderful starting point for the travels to come. It needs to go back into publication.

ATTENTION FURTURE LAWYER WANNABEES!

Review Date: 2003-05-07
I find it hard to believe that this book has not received any feedback. If you are an undergraduate history or political science student who wants to go to law school (especially in Kentucky), a las student, or if you are just seeking an excellent resource examining Kentucky's Political History- this book is for you! This book is a good read. It has a lot of information in it, but the information BY NO MEANS weighs down the actual text. Take the advice from someone who has been there- you cannot grasp the concepts of a state's laws or its government without first understanding its political history. In all seriousness, you should buy this book. G.A.

Dillin's "The Kentucky Rifle" is Definitive
Helpful Votes: 25 out of 25 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-30
Originaly published in the '20's, Capt. Dillin's history and illumination of the classic American longarm is the definitive work on the subject and serves as the primary reference for later works, such as those by Kindig, Shumway, Petersen, Buchele, Lindsay and others. Researched and written at a time when some of the last of the area gunmakers were still alive, his work is thoughtful, well-research and replete with examples, anecdotes and photos. No arms library is complete without this book. If you are at all interested in the Kentucky or Pennsylvania rifle, you will read every page.
