A novel well worth reexamination

Howard W. Odum was a pioneering sociologist and folklorist who, as Steven C. Tracy states in his introduction, "...served as a starting point and impetus for studies of African American folklore since the time of his earliest folklore publications in 1909..." RAINBOW ROUND MY SHOULDER: The Blue Trail of the Black Ulysses is the first novel of a trilogy which mines African American folklore to create the narrative of a marginalized folk hero John Wesley "Left Wing" Gordon as he travels the country, fights in WWI, and eventually returns to the South. As such, it's a document of a time and place and perhaps even a state of mind in American academic history, an interracial exchange between African American folk culture, a white scholar and the classics. First published in 1928, RAINBOW is well worth reexamining today.
This reexamination is greatly aided by Tracy's fine introduction (nearly one quarter of this edition), which discusses the trilogy in particular and Odum's work in general, including reviews from contemporary authors and scholars. He includes an Odum chronology, bibliograpy, and in the notes for the introduction, a discography for many of the songs referenced in the novel, which will prove an asset for instructors using an interdisciplinary approach.

Badgers Creep Southward

This article, published by the Indiana Academy of Science on January 1, 1999, is an excellent introduction into the methods of range expansion in medium-sized fossorial carnivores in open grasslands or other treeless habitats. In this case the mammal in question, the badger (Taxidea taxus,) has been expanding southward in Indiana due to a confluence of reasons. This southward range expansion has been seen many times before in similar mammals, perhaps most notably the thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Spermophilus tridecemlineatuls) and in other similarly agrarian areas, notably southern Illinois. The main issues allowing expansion involve trapping, protection, and available habitat.
Badgers were legal furbearers in Indiana until 1966; that combined with the dramatic decrease in the number of licensed fur trappers in the state has resulted in an apparent population increase in badgers. Legal protection for badgers came in 1969 when the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) declared them an endangered species. Finally, increasingly available nesting grounds for badgers, notably reclaimed strip mines, are extremely suitable for foraging and denning.
Although badgers have never been especially common in Indiana, the author surveyed 230 IDNR employees for badger sightings and compared the results with earlier studies dating back to the works of Evermann and Butler in 1894. Several other studies are cited, making this an excellent piece of longitudinal research in Indiana badger habitation. The first official badger census is dated in 1936, and documents the presence of badgers in 24 Indiana counties, mostly in the northern third of the state (although isolated populations appeared, interestingly, in Franklin and Vermillion counties.) A 1955 survey placed the badger in 33 counties, while a 1969 study documented them in 53 counties. By 1982, badgers existed in at least 63 Indiana counties, and this report cites badgers in 92 counties. A map was produced documenting the drift southward of badger populations, and was correlated with Indiana Natural Heritage Program badger sighting and road kill database records.
The article is extremely well researched, and will be of keen interests to mammologists and environmental researchers. The discussion section is well developed, and the author, Kim A. Berkley, questions whether the badger still meets the legal requirements as an endangered species. It is far easier to designate a species as endangered than to remove it from the list, but given the steady habitat expansion of badgers in Indiana, this article strongly suggests that badgers are no longer legally endangered.

A revelation: Leads to a focus upon woman-centered midwifery

This book is a must-read! I've been involved in maternity care reform (and revolution!) for thirty-one years, and Murphy-Lawless' book makes crystal-clear just how destructive and repressive obstetrics has been for women historically, and why most women today have been seduced by so-called "scientific obstetrics," their birthing experiences taken from them in so many ways. It pinpoints over and over again just how women's strengths, flexibility, emotional and physical abilities to bear their children have been denied them systematically for three hundred years. This book, rich with factual research, gives us a great deal of knowledge and strength, for once we understand the forces that fashioned modern obstetrical practice, we can regain the power and the strength to fashion a world in which we become the subjects, the "agents" of our own experiences, mainly by asserting that having children is a complex, profound event of life and health. Listen to the birthing stories of the women you know. Listen to what they say, and what they are not saying. See where they have felt strong, or felt that something important has been taken away from them. Examine your own strengths, and your own fears in the light of the information in this book. Have a wonderful read!

Thinking With The Thinker

What is called thinking?, Heidegger provokes us by saying, that the most thought provoking thing about our age, is that we have yet begun to think. What is called thinking? And how show we orient ourselves around a thinker who insists on being-with him in his thinking - a thinking that does not settle for answers but is guided by essential questions?
Commemorations is a series of essays presented at a symposium honoring Heidegger's thoughts. Several dozen, diverse and eclectic these essays range from the phenomenological to the historical, from analytics to buddhism and hinduism. There is also a section taken up by an Derrida essay (apparently he we very hard to classify). These essays are very accessible, since they were written to be spoken. Moreover, the range of topics provide a rich starting point to begin your own personal questioning into the thinking that is Heideggarian.
I found my this to be a valuable anthology, one which I have referred to several times in my own writings.

This is an excellent introduction to Marion's work so far (incl. _The Erotic Phenomenon_), esp. for an intermediate reader like myself. Horner's _A Theo-logical Introduction_ is probably a bit easier to read for a beginner (and Horner's is shorter), but this book does a much better job of responding to the main criticisms that have been made against Marion. The emphasis on Descartes in Marion's writing is probably a bit unnecessary for an introductory book, but I do think it is very helpful for understanding Marion better.

Contributors to "Real Sports Reporting" include Michelle Kaufman of The Miami Herald; Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch; Tim Povtak and John Cherwa of the Orlando Sentinel; Adam Schefter of the Denver Post; Jay Weiner of the Minneapolis Star Tribune; Philip Hersh of Chicago Tribune; Pat Forde of The Louisville Courier-Journal; Scott French of Soccer America magazine, and several other top-drawer, veteran sports writers at major print media. Each Contributor writes only about his or her respective beat and/or special concern - there is simply no filler here. The book is not for beginners - it doesn't patronize your love of sport - but rather tells you how it is, and how to cover a beat or deal with other real issues in the world of sports reporting. Topics covered include auto racing, tennis, baseball, football, basketball, Olympic sports, soccer, golf, hockey, investigative reporting in sports, racism in sports, differences between covering high school and college sports, and more.

This book was required reading for my History of Russia- The Stalin Years class. As I began to read this book, I began to feel for the people and all the pain and terror that they were experiencing. This book shows the true horror of the time and reminds us that this is a time that we never wish to be part of or experience ever again.

Many of the examples are from performances transcribed by the author during his 14 year tenure as a director of All India Radio. Kaufmann brings an insight and understanding of ICM to bear on a subject usually misinterpreted or biased by Orientalist who seek to conform the musical science of the subcontinent to Western ideals of the theory and practice of music. Kaufmann is the rare individual who approachs ethnomusicology as a true initiate of the form he is studying.
The author gives concise footnotes and sources primarely from Hindu texts but also references Alain Danilou's excellent study of N. Indian music which is confusingly published under the same title and pre dated the Kaufmann text.
I highly recommend this book to any and all persons seeking a well written, well researched book on the subject. Sadly the book is out of print and has been offered for sale at princely sums exceeding US $400.00. I have owned 2 copies prior to the copy currently in my possession and the price has doubled and tripled every time I have replaced it. If you find one buy it you will be richly rewarded. Reviewers update 15/01/06: A search of Amazon.UK shows available copies of this book for as low as US $51.00 If you have an interest buy it now, its out of print and turns up rarely at this low price. Not a plug folks, just a suggestion.
