I realize not everyone going to Hawaii is ultimately fascinated by knowing more about their floral species. But, if you were, or if you were prompted to know more about it, this is the book for you.

Coming from the mainland, where these flowers are usually only seen in luxurious hotel lobbies, one is enchanted with the abundance of these magnificent beauties. Whether in arrangements or growing naturally in the Hawaiian lands, they are simply unbelievable is their uniqueness. This book details the species and provides the reader with more than flower arranging possibilities.

The author, Dr. Kepler, is an environmental consultant specializing in Hawaii and the Pacific. Therefore, the end result of this lovely book is to gain knowledge of the culture, name origins, ethnobotany, medicinal uses, history, flowering seasons, pollination, and ecology of each flower. Comparing what this book offers with the other available books (in Hawaii) there was no contest that for the money this was a better deal.

Even more wonderful, was that the photographs were so beautiful and detailed, we were able to utilize them in the making of a tile portrait of 4 famous Hawaiin flowers when we got home.

This book gives great menu plans and fun ideas for parties. I bought this over on one of my trips to Maui, and came home to try and buy more to give as gifts for upcoming birthdays!

Don't bother trying to order this from Amazon. They don't have it. I found the author's site on the web and have tried to order directly from him.

Gretel McLane's extensive understanding of Hawaii is unparallelled and portrayed brilliantly in this unprecedented literary masterpiece. The native perspective creates a depth of content which captivates and engrosses the reader and exposes the profound Hawaiian allure. A must read for anyone!!

We have this book on our coffee table and everyone always comments on how beautiful it is. The photos are amazing- bright and clear, and take you back to vacation days in Hawaii...aaaah. And I've learned a lot about Hawaii from the history and commentary alongside the photos- Hawaiian history is really fascinating.

Since I was interested in ecology, Hawai'i:The Fires of Life by Garrett A. Smathers and Dieter Mueller-Dombois is very interesting. It is a fascinating account of the invasion, early succession and recovery of vegetation 1959 Kilauea Iki volcano. It was invaluable to me after spending time in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, as I tried to comprenhend the recovery, especially as I walked the Devastation Trail (a short, and worthwhile trail in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

I used these postcards for invitations to my wedding reception. We had a hawaiian luau theme. The guests absolutely loved the postcards and most kept them as keepsakes from the wedding! And the pictures on the postcards are absolutely wonderful! Looking at these postcards is about as close as you'll ever get without actually going to Hawaii.

This is a great eyewitness account of Hawaii in 1863, by one of the era's most intrepid travelers, after it had been impacted by its collision with the American and European powers but while it was still a robust independent Kingdom and before its forced assimilation into the USA. It really gives you a taste of the old Hawaii, if not the original Hawaii.
