Considering it was written in 1909, this is a very good dictionary. It shares some of the flaws common to all older dictionaries, such as odd omissions and a lack of sophistication in the entries. It does have a pronunciation guide and a few grammatical notes, unlike many older dictionaries. Very interesting from a historical perspective. If you're interested in learning to speak Choctaw yourself, I recommend the language learning CD-ROM at ISBN# 0806133791, but you wouldn't go wrong having both.

Cyrus Byington was a missionary who lived among the Choctaw of Oklahoma in the mid 19th century. He set out to construct a lexicon of the Choctaw language in order to translate many Christian prayers, hymns, and bible passages into Choctaw. What resulted was one of the most complete lexicons for a Native American language that exists today. Dictionary is not complete however, and many of the words do indeed date the work. However the work itself has two parts; an English-Choctaw, and a Choctaw-English component. A must have for anyone interested in languages.

I would probably rate this in at 3.5 stars...but I rounded up to 4 stars.
'Escaping Salem' tells the story of the 'witch hunt' in Stamford, CT. We have all grown up hearing about the witch hunts in Salem. There have been movies and there have been discussions of the blood thirsty people in that community going after the witches to rid their villages of their evil practices.
This book begins to examine the people behind some of the stories in the relatively quiet community of Stamford. The book looks at one particular case of a girl named Kate Branch of her fits or rage, her delusions and her overall strange behavior. It discusses the people that many believed were witches and why they considered them witches. Though the arguments were often weak, the arguments gained traction and led to the trials of a couple of women accused of being witches.
The book takes you in to the courtroom as you see some of the problems of the prosecution and the difficulty of 'proving' witchcraft. I had always believed that trials were thrown together to just convict but you can see that there was definitely more effort needed to convict someone.
The biggest problem with the book is that it often reads like a textbook until the last chapter when the author interjects more of his thoughts and conclusions. The book is using public documents so there are some holes in the story which Godbeer tries to fill. Overall, an interesting peak into the late 1600s court system and witches problem.

Few people know that while the infamous Salem witch hunt was taking place in 1692, southwestern Connecticut was undergoing a scare of its own. Godbeer has meticulously researched this event and presents a remarkably detailed story based upon the participants own words. He follows the accusers, the victims, the "witches", the ministers, and the magistrates, from the beginning of the outbreak to its much-more-sensible-than Salem conclusion. Seems one could be a witch and avoid execution in Olde New England. Puritans all - how did Connecticut avoid hysteria and wanton killing? This brief book tells the tale in an interesting, historically accurate fashion.

I worked with Margaret at a psychiatric hospital in San Diego and use to think she had it all...intelligent, beautiful and kind. I remember how happy she was at getting married. I was interviewed by the FBI as part of a background check prior to her getting the prison job. Never in my wildest imagination would I have ever thought this could have happened to her. She knew all about domestic violence and worked with DV victims. How sad she never saw it coming. To have his defense team portray her as addicted loose woman is a terrible injustice. Shame on the alleged psychiatric experts who bought his story of being provoked into this act.

This book was written by a broken hearted mother. Thankfully lacking the glitz of "true crime dramas" that intend to shock you with gory details under the guise of entertainment. Instead the focus is on the the true emotion of the immediate family members who lost one most dear. This is reality! It was eerie for me as I grew up in Windsor, live near Marlboro now and have visited many of the places mentioned in the book and know some of the professionals mentioned; too close to home for comfort. Shirley tells it like it is, from the mess of the system, to the unfair rights of offender versus victim rights. You will be outraged, angry, uncomfortable when you see yourself in response to others grief, and hopefully more compassionate toward the never ending plight of homicide victim survivors. A refreshing look from an angle not often seen. True crime written from a police, prosecutor or defense angle is meant to dazzle (think Vincent Buliogsi (sp?) in Helter Skelter). This angle is strictly meant to educate and inform, it could, unfortunately, happen to you. Will you respond with the same courage and determination of the Bostrom's?

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.
I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.
My favorite chapters were:
1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need
The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.
I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.
Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.
I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.
When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 50 versions of this book sold; the only state I haven't found a copy for is Montana. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain has that knightly quality about it. If you are into knights, wizards and ladies in distress then this the book for you. In this book you meet many knights in shining armor including the ever charming Sir Launcelot. Along with knights you will meet not only Merlin but someone who can best him more than once. and let's not forget the ladies in distress, let's just say the one you will meet will steal your heart away. I recommend this book because it is an enlightenment to those of us who have it pretty easy. It is worth your time and your imagation.

A Victorian era New England male gets trapped in Fourth Century England, specifically in Camelot, where he uses his wits and knowledge of the future for survival.
This novel is a classic, yes because its written by Mr Clemons, I mean Twain haha. It is satire at its finest though, much in the mold of Gulliver's Travels. It is in fact really difficult to review because it is in fact literature and as such how does a 21st Amazon reviewer critique a great work, that loses none of its charm through the centuries that friends is even a greater challenge as being strange man in strange land (time even) as Twain's hero was stuck in Arthurian England.
It is basically a brilliant retelling of the Arthurian legend by an American no less just to further amplify Twain's mastery of his craft he uses the language as magically in Merlin in this tale.
Too verboise a review for one that hasn't been at all critical, so two more words....

The Mobile book has great maps. However, the layout of the book other than the maps is not user friendly. When we traveled in New England, we went to "regions" not just cities. The book is laid out with recommendations under each city. Some of the other books we used had regional groups rather than just cities. The maps were the most detailed and were what we relied upon most of the trip.

While this book does provide a glimpse of many remodeling projects in different corners of the country, I was hoping for more detail than the small amount of copy and tiny floorplans offered. The book did do a nice job of zooming in on some key features that the designers had added, but at the expense of detailed descriptions of the projects.

The book is useful, and provides good insights into the rides described if you happen to live close to a number of rides. There are two considerations that make the book less useful than it should be.
First, the rides, as the title suggests, are short - some are less than 10 miles. Second, since Connecticut is a large state, you can expect to be a very substantial distance from any particular ride. While it might be worth it to drive 50-100 miles to participate in a bike trip of 50 miles, if the bike trip is only 10 miles, then the drive doesn't necessarily seem worth it.

This book is great for anyone who wants to go out for a short Bike ride in the morning or evening or anytime. The instructions to get to a riding route are easy enough to follow that a person can usually find the route without a map, Although it is always good to have one. The book gives sites to see along the routes, as well as difficulty, Safety, and a detailed map with text describing what to do with all 36 routes. All in all a good book for any one who wants to go for a short, scenic bike ride in Connecticut.

A good mystery that keeps you guessing but does not hold up to the first in the series Hardscape. However, it is a good mystery and I recomend it.
