Interesting history of Hartford

Basically this is a history of the capital city of Connecticut (and its immediate surroundings) seen through its architecture, parks, and monuments. Rather than detailing the city's past by sections, it instead does so by specific edifices (there are separate chapters on factories, government buildings, banks, churches, homes, hospitals, etc.), parks, and various monuments and scuptures that can be found throughout the city. Quite a bit of detailed historical, cultural, and civil information is given for each entry. Anyone interested in Hartford, whether visiting or armchair traveling, will find much provocative information in this book. Hopefully a 6th edition is in the works.

I live in Connecticut, with a family of two elementary aged twins. We take a lot of day-trips, and as we are learning about our Connecticut History in the fourth grade, we've decided that there are still so many places to visit nearby. With our current gasoline "crisis"---if you live in Connecticut, or even close by in NY or RI or MA, coastal CT is still worth visiting. You don't have to be rich & famous, as some would have you to believe. Read this book and step back only about 30 years in time to a quieter life in a small town along the south east coast in CT, and you'll peek into a world that is sadly, slowly--disappearing.
With his meticulous research and easy going writing style, you will see into the very heart of the village--as it grew from those old dry Puritan societies of religious and farming men, to the lively tapestry of ethnic groups that it still is, today. The town of Stonington shifted its center from upland at the Road Church, in old "Wequetequock" to a place on the water called "Long Point" and so began its life as a major seaport.
I have lived in Connecticut most of my life and one of my very favorite places to wander through--is Stonington Borough. Sadly, the fishing fleet is depleted, but you can still hear the old ghosts of seacaptains and the Portuguese families who made this small village one of the best reasons to take a day-trip to explore it.
Wear GOOD walking shoes, and take your camera. Come in Autumn when the tourists are mostly gone. Water Street is where all the shops are, and you can find a pleasant place for coffee in quite a few establishments. The street is very narrow and becomes "one-way," so the best thing to do is find a spot to park at its beginning and walk down, and back up. The Lighthouse is a museum now, and well worth a visit too. If you are a painter, don't forget your easel or sketchbook. There are so many wonderful spots to visit, read the book for the fun of it and you may agree that Stonington is worth a visit. Even if "you can't get there from here" as the Yankee saying goes, the book is a fun and intimate read about life in a small, coastal New England village. How I wish it could remain frozen in time!

Front the cover: This book begins with a description of the New England Indian and how he lived for centuries before the arrival of the white man. It then goes on to pinpoint the fate of specific Connecticut tribes, after the Dutch and English arrived, a fate which reduced their numbers until only 123 pure-blooded Indians remain in the state today (c. 1972).

This book has been indispensible in tracking down key information on a number of my relatives. My family came from the school of thought that what was left in the past should stay in the past. With most of my relatives now dead, there are few people to talk to. The two books in the collection are well-organized and easy to use.

I have been researching the John (Pilgrim) Ogden line for 30 years and now I know why I had so much difficulty trying to understand this genealogy. The book is excellent. It provides some much needed answers to the question surrounding Wheeler's, "Ogden Genealogy" and how much of the information in the beginning of that text is false. No wonder we are all having so many problems with this family line. The only downside to the book is that there isn't enough information on the Ogdens of England which would substantiate the line going back much further than 1600. However, 1600 is nothing to laugh at. Anyone want to write a book on John Ogden of Rye. It turns out that's my ancestral line, not the Pilgrim's. These two were cousins and I wish there had been more information than one small paragraph in the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone researching the Ogden family line.

The books arrived ahead of time and in great shape. Price quoted was the price paid. If you are a history buff, especially from Killingly Ct. you will abosultly love this selection. What was really great was after I completed the book, I took it to my parents. They really enjoyed sharing there part of growing up in Killingly. Now the stories will be handed down to the next generation. I thank the people who wrote this book and all that were instramental. One finaly note is that Killingly will be celebrating it's tricentenial next year. I will be able to relate in many portions.

I own several the the Images of America Series and, overall, they are a wonderfully interesting and nostalgic read.
However, I cannot review this volume yet as I have not received this part of my order. In my experience with the others, I'm sure it will be just as good.

A detailed, meticulously thought out, legal compendium, expressed with the characteristic limpidity of the author.
A true guide through the labyrinth of Connecticut mental health law in its various aspects.
