This cookbook offers recipes from all over Thailand and is so gorgeously illustrated you want to eat the pages. The photographs which accompany the recipe steps complete the "perfect cookbook package." I loved this cookbook enough to buy two!

It`s a Wonderfull Book

I am just sixteen years old,but a big fish and marine life entusiast. I think this is one of the best books on tropical reef fishes ever written. When I received this book on the holidays,I was incredibly happy. Even though I recognized many of the species, there was some new and many new views of species I`d already knew. It covers all kinds of fish, from sharks to anemonfishes. And the colour of them are the most striking I`ve ever seen on animals. My favorite chapter is probably the first one, about sharks & rays. In second to it,there are the Scorpionfish and the Moray Eel chapter, although the angelfishes are the most beautifull fishes, the sharks are the coolest and most fascinating. At all,I will give it an high rate and I am a great fan of the author,Helmut Debelius, who has made many other great fish books which I also own,but this one is the best! But I would like if it was a little bit longer (a book of 450 pages would have been good)and have covered a little more about the behaviour of the fishes, and their reaction to divers, showing additional photos.

This volume on culture and politics in Southeast Asia contests the essentialist argument that culture is something derived from the past and hence unchanging.

A book of it's kind...

This is an intensive and informative kind of book about Thailand and the United States alliance. There is probably no other book like this around that describes the background of Thailand and it's many coups and revolutions from 1947 to 1958, and it's involvment in all the Indochinese conflicts. And why the United States would support and ally with a corrupted and often brutal Thai army which at that time controlled the country and government. The book is really about Thailand at it's most, but it also tells Thailand's relationships with (besides USA), France, Britain, Laos, Cambodia, China, etc. Its a very useful and valuable book for those who wants to know about Thailand and the United States relationship from the very beginning, and how Thailand became as USA's most important ally at that time. A recommended history book.

Delicious Thai Food, it's all Here Waiting to be Enjoyed

Review Date: 2006-07-16
Seven years ago my husband Dub and I sailed into Whangarai Harbour in New Zealand. On our way in I spied some friends or ours, Gayle and John, who we'd met in Tahiti. They were Kiwis and they were ending their five year circumnavigation, home at last. We anchored close to their boat and later dinghied over for sundowners (usually Coke and Rum). That evening, as usual, we told tall tales of our adventures at sea and we congratulated ourselves on being in this wonderful place at this wonderful time. Later, as we were saying our goodbyes, Gayle gave me her set of the Salamandar Book of Series Cookbooks. They are sold by HP Books in the States as paperbacks. Gayle carried these books around the planet and now she was giving them to me, complete with her notes (written in the books) on the recipes, how well she and John liked certain dishes, which were their favorites, how hard they were to prepare. She knew I was a cook and she thought I'd appreciate them. She was right.

Like all the books in the series "The Book of Thai Cooking" is about five inches wide and about a foot tall, making them kind of unique among cookbooks. But one should not be put off because of the odd shape, these are real books and you can find mighty darned good recipes in them, especially in this book. The Pork and Peanut Soup on Page 28 was one of Gayle and John's favorites and Dub and I quickly took to it. The Shrimp and Cucumber Curry on Page 60 is another delight as is the Shrimp in Yellow sauce on Page 53. You can really get into Thai cookery with this book, whether it's using banana leaves or tangy curry, it's all here, waiting to be enjoyed.

Essential if you're gay and visiting Thailand

Even if you have had no prior knowledge of Thai, this book clearly presents the sound system and shows the Thai script. It provides ALL vocabulary relevant to gay life, and gives quite a bit of background from gay Thais about life in their country. My only caveat would be that it generally presents homosexuality as accepted and even celebrated there. This is a common presentation of gay life in many countries. However, one should always be aware that we are not the majority and there is bigotry everywhere. But with that in mind, I must say this is truly an impressive little book--it does a lot in a short space, the author is to be commended!
