this is one of those rare business books written with style and thought. a must for any serious reader.

This book is wonderful! It is packed with spectacular pictures and the quality of the paper is very good, so the pictures are vibrant in the colors. This book makes me want to jump on the next plane to Madeira! Can't wait to visit!

This book covers Spanish History from the beginning of Charles V's reign through Phillip III's reign. The book concentrates mostly on Charles V and Phillip II. It was written about forty years ago and is the from the first revisionist books about Phillip II. Davies examines many of the famous rumors about Phillip and debunks them. Davies also was one of the first to examine Phillip's method of government. Geoffrey Parker's book on Phillip II is one of the latest books on Phillip II and his method of government. Alot of the revisionist ideas of Parker's are in this book, which for some reason he doesn't quote. It is a very clearly written book, and unlike Parker's book follows through all of Phillip's reign. The majority of the book is about the political events of the period. But, there is also a chapter on Spanish Culture during this period.

I'm aware of only one other book, now decades out of print, that does equivalent justice to Goya's stunning, apocalyptic final visions. Even the current big, ritzy Goya monographs can't touch the top-quality reproductions that this book offers, printed as they are on a curious matt paper, thin and oddly textured, but affording an excellent impression of the painterly quality of these impasto nightmares. The author's text and various 'poetic' contributions are B-grade, but not to worry; this is not a book to read but to LOOK AT and be transported by, into a dream that, while exhilarating, one is releived to wake from. Hang the expense! If you love Goya, you must have this startling book.

The best part of the story when Ethel gets scared because she can't stop the spainish cart shes in and Mr Wainwright is drunk and he is sing. At the end the group for joy on a DJ's roof and fall into his swiming pool. Another good part is when Nora accidently a jet pack of white sun cream is fell onto Mr Wainwrigth face.

Anything Robert Carrier writes is brillant. Anyone who loves to cook loves his recipes. His tastes in food and wine are quite simply superb. He is at the Head of the Line.

This book is out of print and must be sought in libraries (often university)and second hand book dealers. If you can find it to buy-do so. It is a well-written, detailed account of the Iberic languages, beginning in the ancient world with a latin base influenced by Basque (a fellow, non-Romance Iberic language),ancient Germanic dialects,arabic and the modern French and English languages(e.g."El Esmokin":tuxedo). The amateur might be initially lost within Entwistle's references to yods,bi-labials and fricatives (the mechanics of speaking that influence [mis]pronounciation).Again, this book is a must-have for anyone wishing to study the origins of this sub-group of languages, one of which (Spanish)has grown enormously in influence since this book was originally published in the 1930s.

This book is not only a classic, but it is being updated by the author in a new edition that will cover the years 1990-2000!
