Fantastic and healthy foods from the Basque country
Helpful Votes: 41 out of 42 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-05
Basque food is incredibly good, and this cookbook provides 130 recipes that will convince you again and again of this fact. From the wonderful pinchos -- super appetizers -- to delicious salads, hearty stews and soups, and amazing main dishes, this book is like a fountain of delights. I nearly changed my name to Rex Rabbiteater after tasting the braised rabbit in red wine sauce. It is easy to imagine that the time-honored Basque cooking will emerge as one of the top global cuisines of the early 21st century, given the wonderful job that Teresa Barrenechea has done in presenting it to the world.

This very neat little paperback book is a colorful introduction to the Channel Islands, located in the Gulf of St. Malo between England and France. The pictures are wonderful and the text is full of the long and distinguished history of these islands. This book made me want to drop everything and go visit there! Really! Buy a copy of this book today, and maybe you will want to go there too.

Mallorca & Menorca pocket guide by Berlitz
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-12
Excellent! This book took you step by step around the island. It was an excellent reference to places of interest. We had a great time finding the places on the island and highlighting them. The book is superior to most tour books we've used while living in Europe. Use this book to decide where to travel on the island. Most of the ports and large areas of interest are within 1 hour of most hotels. When making plans to visit somewhere else on the island make sure you know the operating hours (this was missed in the publication of this book) but most of the hotels will have brochures available. This book is a MUST have if headed to Mallorca.

An Indispensable Map that Sets the Standard for Others!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-09
This was the first Berndtson map I'd ever owned and I found it indispensable. Right after landing, I grabbed my shades, sunblock, a bottle of water, and walked my way around a good part of Madrid for two weeks with the help of this map. To me, there's nothing more annoying than struggling with a large, paper map with tiny print, while I'm on the go. This map is easy enough to use that you can read it while walking due to its form and layout.

First of all, with its oversized print and color-coded layout, it's very easy to read at a glance. No more squinting. Landmarks, neighborhoods, and subway stops are clearly marked.

Second, it contains mini-maps of Segova and Toledo. As we sat on a bus for Segovia, my skeptical travel partner wondered aloud about how to get her bearings in Segovia. I said that I thought my map contained a guide to the town, she grumbled that what I had was a map of Madrid, NOT of Segovia. Suprised as I unfurled my map and triumphantly handed it to her, she exclaimed, "this is a REALLY good map!" Very handy if you just want a quick general guide for a brief day trip to Segovia and Toledo.

Third, its laminated and oversized, which means it's easy to fold and keep neat. No more torn or soggy maps, no more struggling to re-fold it back into some semblance of order, and no more splitting at the folds after constant use.

Fourth of all, because it is laminated, I've used it to sit on dirty or wet surfaces, as a picnic tablecloth (just wipe clean!), as a fan in the 100+ degree heat of Madrid in July, and as an umbrella during an unexpected summer rainstorm. You just can't get any better than that!

Now, whenever I travel, I always look for Berndtson/Borch's laminated maps. Although visitors staying for longer may wish to buy a more detailed street map for Madrid and surrounding areas, this one did me just fine for 2 weeks of walking around Madrid, Segovia, and Toledo. To me, it paid for itself 10 times over. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Well known to Latin Americanists, La Florida del Inca is strangely neglected by English readers in the U.S. Why? Perhaps lack of context. This delightfully illustrated collection presents top scholars writing for a general audience. The result? The best introduction to date for non-Spanish speakers on the work. My only complaint? It's not in paperback. Now if only U Texas Press would bring back the Varners' translation ....

"The Bitter Taste of Time " is the story of a family of strong women and weak men that reads like silk as it weaves itself through pre- Franco times, the Spanish Civil War and the arrival of an uncertain democracy in modern Spain. The playing field is the tiny Spanish town of Canteira in the province of Galicia. Cantiera is "a town of barbarous ignorance," "a town of hens and roosters, clucking away at people's miseries" which grows,in the seventy year span of the novel, to a bustling town of seventy thousand. The players are five unforgettable women, Maria la Reina, Carmen the Holy One, Cecilia the story-teller who feeds the body and the soul, Maria's daughters Asuncion and Matilde, and Maria's grand-daughter Gloria, the entrepreneur. The centre line is the small pension which later becomes the Encarna and Hope Hotel. Through here pass the contrabandistas and many others, who bring to the small town the outside world with all its changes and horrors. These stories, Cecilia feeds the town people who weep "so as not to weep for their own loved ones, their own tragedies, the memories that ate away at their hearts, so that years and years later, their own stories remained untold, lay safely trapped inside, because the telling, they knew, would bring it all back, the fear, the torment, the pain..." This is a very Spanish tale, reminiscent of Isabel Allende and "Like Water for Chocolate", which could not be placed anywhere else in the world, and Gonazalez, who is a Canadian writer, runs with the best Canada has to offer. Suffice to read the frenzy she creates for the reader as she contrapositions the impending deaths of Artur and Maria. Suffice to recall the "vats of venom, "spittoons of spite" and "harangues of hate" that tumble from Maria's lips. Suffice to envision Arturo's limp body, swinging among the hams, to feel the power of the author's pen. An excellent read.
