Wonderful, moving story for children of all ages

This is a wonderful story of a man who made a difference in many slaves' lives. The side by side English/Spanish text is beautifully written, and stays nondenominational, even though it is the story of the patron saint of slaves. The illustrations are also lovely, and both the text and pictures hold the attention of my antsy son. One of his favorite books, it is a deeply moving spiritual story that I recommend to all.

This is a terrific example of a spiritual book for kids. The poetic text rivals that of the secular classics, and the pictures are rich, textured, and deeply moving. Yet there's no overt message, no preaching, no denominational stand. It's just a wonderful book -- period.

This book exposed me, in quite dramatic form, to the incredible cloister imagery of Medieval Spain. This is the single finest book, of the genre, that I've ever had the privilege of perusing, and peruse it I most certainly did.

The author's personal journey through the trials and tribulations of a life spent with her older brother Dave speaks volumes about the lengths she must have gone through, and the obstacles she's overcome to publish this masterwork. Kudos!

Beautifully written and photographed. The ultimate guide to Spanish cloister art. Author/Photographer Pamela Patton is a genius, and is not afraid to show the influence of her smarter brother Dave. A must buy for everyones Christmas list!!!!

Superb -- this is all you need!

I used this book and the similar Camino Portugues book for my pilgrimage in April 2006. They are both superb. I followed Brierley's suggestions pretty much to the letter. The book contains excruciating details as well as a longer and spiritual view.

I think of the book as a personal gift to each of us pilgrims. Brierley obviously loves his work and the Camino. He kept me on track, put me to bed early and awake early when it was important, encouraged me to appreciate the wonderful people and sights along the camino. He offers history lessons, lists of practicalities, maps and directions. This book is all you need!

Same format as the Camino Frances guide - laid out in three stages. One stage per day, one map per stage total of 95 pages. In addition to covering the route, it has a section of practical information on when to go, covers Galician history and culture. A beautiful full color guide.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I did not know anything about Ignatius of Loyola except that he started the Society of Jesus. The Translators Notes are wonderful. In the beginning of each section I read the TN first and then the autobiography. This book will give you a good idea on his conversion and how he started the Society of Jesus. It is interesting to read about a saint's life at the time of so called reformation.

A noble man and a well told story

There are few old classic stories like the one of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. In this book we find an understandable story that fully explores all the parts that made this man special. His gifts and even his flaws are expossed but in the end, you will find great inspiraton and love for this human saint who walked so among us and did so much to influence our education system and the church policies.

I like the way the author wrote the story. I could identify with the journey that Ignatius took with his life. A worthy book to read for life inspiration. A man with much to admire. Highly recommended!

1956 Nobel prize winner! A classic that all should know. The poet and the donkey travel to remote villages and they talk about the simple drama of small village life. This is a shorter version- the full version is 138 chapters and this book has nineteen of the most famous works. Get the hardcover of this book because you will need it! They made a later version of this in softcover- you will rue the day of not ordering the hardcover it is a great translation tool. Our reviews are for people like you to make great investments in literature.

Amazing

The single most depressing book I've ever read in my life. It's amazing because the book inspires you to get out and help others who are stuck in a hapless situation.

I'll quote the last paragraph in the book to give you an idea, if you're not interested then look no further.

"Only the river remained, murmuring, ever moving, ever restless, ever sounding, as though it dragged in its current the prolonged lament of an inconsolable grief, as though it carried dissolved in its waters the tears of a misfortune that no one wipes dry, that no one comforts...that no one knows about!"

Phenomenal book.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you what the book is about. You should read it! It is that good! I will tell you some of its themes. Haves vs Have nots, incest, rape, murder, poverty, love, romance, all throwned into a presssure cooker titled "La charca" to create one of the most touching, poigant stories you will ever read. It has a lot of twist and turns which in the end left me completely blown away.

¡AUTOESTIMA!

A new way to look at relationships

I found this book interesting, funny and sometimes even realistic in the situations presented by the author. On one hand, there is real and scientific data to support any of her statements. For all I care, she may only put the information collected just from her dates, or friends' dates, but the fact is that it makes you think and even analize your own issues in a relaitionship that went bad. It really helped me to look at my life, my relationship and how it ended and how to try again with a better and funnier idea of how to start a new relationship from a new perspective. Overall, I found the book, interesting, funny and an awakening to my own experiences. I think every one should read it and take from it whatever really touched you. It is not be a cookbook on relationships. It is not to be taken as all women should turn into one. It is to pick from it what will work for you! I liked it!

Port And The Douro is the fascinating story of Port over the centuries and surveys the remarkable physical conditions of the wine growing region of Portugal, the grape varieties, and the vineyards that make the Douro valley so special. Richard Mayson draws upon his many years of experience in the wine trade in general and his remarkable expertise in Port wines and how they are made. Port And The Douro is definitive, comprehensive, informative, articulate, and greatly rewarding reading for connoisseurs, dealers, and the nonspecialist general reader seeking to select just the right Port for the occasion.

A renowned collection

This is an exquisite table top book that you won't want to shelve anytime soon. Lavish in detail the book has 275 paintings that are world famous. The time period covered is the 12th right up through the 20th century. No easy task to get a sampling from the Prado, one of the greatest museums in the world. The author manages just that as he doesn't over emphasive the "known" masters and unveils some of the lesser and even unknown artists.Since the author, Santiago Alcolea Blanch, a renowned art historian, is Spanish, there is a leaning towards the works of the well known Spanish masters like El Greco and Velasquez, right up to the more modern Picasso. This is not to say that it only features Spanish artists as it includes the masters from throughout Europe. Anyone interested in art will love and benefit from this book. There is much to be learned from superb works that have withstood world wars and other atrocities of mankind and been viewed by millions of people. The first paintings revealed are those painted on murals and board, eventually working its way to oil on canvas. Since much of the works from the masters is of a religious nature one will find superb paintings inspired from the divine, mans earliest works as manifested through his interpretations of God and his glory. Marveling at these works leaves no doubt about the everlasting impression this subject matter must have had on the artists. That we would be given the opportunty to view such inspirational works from the comforts of our living rooms is an additional blessing. The works are not limited to religious themes as there are countless portraits of the nobility and loyalty that shaped the world events of their time and even directed the course of history. These were the photographs of their day, long before digital images could be loaded instantly on a computer, only the wealthy could afford such a luxury. The works, as percieved through the eyes of the artist are uncommon and magnificent testimonials of a bygone era. As an additional bonus the book is also a history book. The first 139 pages are a concise explanation of the origins of the Royal Collection and the Academy of Fine Arts. Included in the historical tour are great black and white photographs of the Prado in various time periods, including draft plans for the additions. Each director is profiled in story book fashion to illustrate the achievements and problems encountered during their time as directors. Captivating and informative, the written word in this book is an excellent source of information for the art historian. Follow the trial and tribulations of those most influential in giving the world one of it's greatest museums. For furhter exploration there is also a pretty extensive bibliography. This is a quality book that any lover of art will cherish, highly recommended for those that like the works of the masters.

The Best book on the Prado available (maybe ever!)

Take a tour of the fabulous Prado museum with this lavishly illustrated volume. Featuring over 300 full page photos, this work reveals the astounding depth of the Prado's collection. The book is arranged by "schools" of nationalities, just as the museum is, and features many of the most classic and cherished paintings Europe has produced from medieval triptychs to Picasso's "Guernica". These aren't the only paintings featured, however. The reader is invited to see the collection longitudinally. I really enjoyed, for example, seeing the wonderful variety of Velasquez' paintings - those he did in the employ of the royal court were markedly different than his early work.

The book is not just colorplates, though. The first 125 pages give a detailed history of the museum itself, which is very fascinating (especially the travails of the building and the collection during the civil war). There is also included a reprinting of the royal proclamation establishing the museum in 1432.

The book is published by Abrams' reprint service, but the quality is still exceptional. The colors are beautiful and the binding is very nice and durable as well. Enjoy it!

Gerassi does a great job gathering the history of several individuals and following them through the war and reviewing their lives before and after. If you are looking for first hand accounts, then this book must be taken into consideration. Only soft spot was as the other reviewer stated, poor organization.

This is an extremely engaging work on a topic I have had very little exposure to. It consists almost entirely of first hand accounts, strung together with a little background information on who is speaking. Gerassi is obviously passionate about this subject (his father was a general in the Spanish Civil War) and has written a wonderful resource on the topic. This book made me angry that no one had bothered to teach me this stuff in high school. The stories these people tell are deeply moving. For the most part they are portrayed as deeply thoughtful and amazing examples of humanity.

That said, the organization of this book is horrible. The index is abominable (for example, the entry on "women" lists three pages, even though there are two women interviewees who speak multiple times throughout the book). I honestly had more luck randomly flipping through the book than trying to look things up. There are page numbers listed for the bit players, but not for the actual interviewees. Someone needs to take this book and re-organize it because it deserves to be more accessible than it is now.
