The book is about people, places and changes shifting from the past to the present. The book seeks some centre of meaning in life. It presents to everyone about what happened to people of the world centuries ago; the configuration of people, their understanding and the role of each individual person on Earth. The book tells about historical events of West Africa in the 15th century in such a way that it is easy to understand. It tells a little history about Portugal and what promted them to sail to West Africa. It tells about history of the Netherlands and their aim and what prompted them to visit West Africa in the first place. I was enlightened about the slave trade, and the booming exports of cocoa, gold, diamonds in Ghana and why West Africa has become what it is today. 1,000 Places to See Before You Die: A Traveler's Life List

This is one of those books that will probably appeal to only the serious historian for it covers an extremely narrow compass. However, if your interest is in the Portuguese spice trade of 17th century India, this is your book.

Rarely have I seen a book that uses and documents primary sources better than 'Twilight of the Pepper Empire'. The author makes use of 400 year old shipping manifests to compile a month by month account of the Portuguese spice exports from the Malabar coast. Every fortress and trading post the Portuguese built is documented in a level of detail I would not have thought possible given the obscurity of the primary source material. Even the secondary sources, usually more readily available to the general public, are such that I have spent two unsuccessful years trying to locate personal copies. Simply stated, this book is a testament to what a serious historian can produce.

This is not 'Nathaniel's Nutmeg'. If you want a book to read by the fireplace this is not it. But as an historical text 'Twilight of the Pepper Empire' is top notch.

Understanding Contemporary Chicana Literature uses the works of six notable Chicana authors to reveal common themes, images and concerns which make their writing part of a larger growing Latina community of work. Prose, novels, poetry and short works of Bernize Zamora, Ana Castillo, Sandra Cisneros, Denise Chavez, Alma Luz Villanueva and Lorna Dee Cervantes are considered in an assessment essential to any ethnic collection.

Codified before the Magna Carta, these laws created the heart and body of the Catalan character and later empire which influenced the Mideaval world in ways still felt today. If you are a student of Spanish and Catalan history, you should start with the Usatges of Barcelona.

Read it slowly and carefully, and read up on the history of the Kingdom of Aragon as well. What you learn will change your views of modern laws and Spanish history in general.

An easy to read, inclusive study of a little-known period of Iberian history, highly recommended for those interested in Roman or early Iberian history. This work merges history and archaeology and bridges a gap between Roman Iberia and the Gothic era. Graphs and maps help illustrate key points. Hopefully this author (or another) will follow-up with similar studies of subjects from Roman Iberia and the much-neglected Gothic era.

This book shows the way forward for men

As a man it's easy to feel like you're the only one feeling what you're feeling, like no-one will fully understand. This book shows how the forming of connections between men in the form of close friendships can provide a bridge to an understanding many of us are lacking. This book brought me to tears many a time as I realised the far-reaching implications of what it said. I now see that the closeness of childhood with others should be continued in adult life with those of the same sex. I think the ideas in this book are the antidote for the suffering we feel caused by the expectations of society to be something we deep down know is wrong. I think this is a very fine book and Bob and Buddy have a lot to be proud of, I am extremely grateful to them for writing it and hope they will write more.

A gripping account of the Spanish Civil War
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-06
From agricultural collectives to socialized industry to the role of women in the revolution, Emma Goldman details the heart-wrenching struggles of the Spanish people fighting heroically against social reaction. While we should no doubt be wary of left sectarianism, there is certainly much we can learn from Goldman's insights on the problems with coalition politics. As we now know, the libertarian socialist movement in Spain was destroyed not only by Franco, but by Russian betrayal. Though this book is about a war that took place some 70 years ago, it will resonate nevertheless today with feminists, union organizers, peace activists, and anti-fascists working to build a new, better, more democratic society. As these writings are some of Emma Goldman's last, they will be of much importance to radical scholars interested in her life and legacy. In addition, David Porter intersperses throughout this book useful commentary that helps to contextualize her writings. In short, this book is an inspiring tribute to a passionate woman who despite serious obstacles of poverty, sexism, and political repression lived her life in defense of the poor, the downtrodden, the oppressed.

'Write Me Down A Victory'
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-17
This is an excellent volume of excerpts from numerous primary accounts of the British viewpoint, from the participants, of the War in the Spanish Peninsula from 1808-1814. The author has reinforced his growing reputation as one of the best chroniclers of that war with this exciting compendium of accounts that start with Rolica in 1808, one of the hardest fights Wellington had in his long, spectacular career, and ending with the French sortie from Bayonne in 1814. The entire gamut of the long, costly, and famous campaigns in the Peninsula are covered accurately and convincingly, and the author has added another piece of excellent scholarship to the growing list of Napoleonic titles now in print.

Some of the accounts are from familiar 'voices' and places, others are not,and are a welcome addition to the roster of primary accounts with which all of us can use as reference in our own studies. I will leave it to the curious and studious to find out who they are in this handy volume, which will undoubtedly whet the appetite of those wishing to broaden their knowledge of this fascinating series of campaigns that gave Napoleon a continuous second front and bled the superb regiments of the Grande Armee that fought in Spain.

Volumes such as this have greatly influenced my own choice of reading for the period. Long an admirer of the Grande Armee, I have now gone back to restudy the campaigns in the Peninsula, which, though a secondary theater, the excellent army Wellington developed and fielded was decisive to the allied cause. Ian Fletcher is somewhat responsible for this renewed interest on my part, and he has done us all a great service with this study and his other works.

This work is highly recommended and is another arrow in the quiver for Greenhill, which is continually producing excellent works on the Napoleonic era. Hopefully, the association of Greenhill and Ian Fletcher will continue for the benefit of us all. This book is a rare treat, and if you fail to read it, you are missing out on an outstanding study of the period from the British point of view. It is a worthwhile addition to any library having to do with the British army, the Peninsular War, or both.

Excellent resource for the design inclined traveller. A perfect compliment for the more cumbersome "Lonely Planet" style travel guides. The Wallpaper team has a great eye.
