A very good read
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-30
Unlike Marie Arana's American Chica, where the image of a bridge in Lima is used to describe the author's approach to her two cultures, Portugal's fictional account of her own youth uses the image of an earthquake fault both to describe her own broken family and the Guatemalan culture in which the story takes place. Although at first the book appears to be merely about the painful coming of age of a child with two very different American parents living abroad in utter conflict, Guatemalan culture slowly, almost imperceptibly, begins to take center stage. The author's masterful imagery and dry sense of humor make this book a wonderful way to begin to understand a foreign culture through American eyes.

Magellan Still Lives!

Review Date: 2000-03-26
The best biographical book on this explorer yet! You can actually feel what Ferdinand Magellan felt during his voyage around the world. During his life between 1480-1521, he goes through many tasks, his age doesn't matter to him when he decides to circumnavigate the world. Who named the Pacific Ocean? He did! Pacific means calm. Did you know that? I bet you did not! You can find out more about his extroardinary life and achievements in this book. This book is great for bibliography writing, historical figure speeches, or just for plain fun and your acknowledgement.

The brutal truth that will inspire humility.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-02
This book should be listed as required reading for all. The fact that it was written by a witness to the brutal, inhumane ambitions of mankind, is testimony with which we might more acurately explain some of our social dilemas. The author wrote, without an agenda, what the conditions were on board a slave vessel. Apalling, dehumanizing, brutal. The history depicted is a necessary lesson if we ever hope not to repeat the devestation. Spend 50 day on board a slave vessel and you will carry the experience with you forever.

Magnificent and detailed Spanish and Portugese architecture
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.

For depth, visual grandeur and sheer beauty, you can't do much better than this book. With buildings ranging from the Nasrid palace to the Umayyad mosque at Cordoba the author reveals the history and aesthetic techniques used in Spanish and Portugese Oriental architecture. Anyone wanting a fuller appreciation or knowledge of this rich architectural legacy would do well to linger over this one. Chapters are arranged by historical period or movement (Christianity in the North...Confrontation and Reconquest...Revival and Transformation...etc). The photos deserve special mention. They were specially commissioned for this book and are so gorgeous that I have picked up the book again and again (even when I was too tired to read the text) just to enjoy looking at them. Truly stunning photography!

Good look at border relations and cultural differences
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-26
I really enjoyed this book, at first it would seem that we are getting a glimpse at life on the border between the US and Mexico, but we are also treated to a rivalry of cultures which bring all the characters to a confrontation with their beliefs, wants, and needs. The head of the family is a typically wise older Mexican man that has tried hard to create his own world where he can dictate how he wants his family to live. Yet, he senses that there is only so much control you can exercise before you start loosing those things that are precious to us. Very good and funny.

I had 24 hours in Lisbon and this was awesome
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-24
I had only 24 hours in Lisbon on my way to a conference. This book had the all-important map, a list of the top attractions with a page devoted to each- photo, directions, and briefly explaining why it's a draw. It explained the currency, the customs, and had a restaurant and lodging guide. I skimmed it on the plane and easily planned my trip from it- and the lady next to me, who had two much thicker guidebooks, saw that this was so much easier to use that she borrowed it from me and tossed her own to one side. And it was slim and fairly easy to carry. I've never had such a useful travel guide. It you were spending more than a week there you might need something more detailed- but I picked up the details from the places I visited! From the guide I just needed to know where to go and how, and this was perfect. And Lisbon, by the way, is wonderful ;-)
