As an expressive arts therapist who has written about creative expression and grief, I am hard to please. I found The Art of Grief to be much more than pleasing. It is an extremely useful book that covers just about anything a helping professional might want to know in order to use the arts to work with grieving clients. The book is well-ordered, easy to follow and has very specific information and examples from a very wide range of the arts. One does not need to be an artist to make use of the tools as they are designed to be used with a wide range of people. It also addresses the needs of various ages. This book could be used as a class textbook it is so thorough. I highly recommend reading it.

I found this guidebook to be thought-provoking and easy to use. The theoretical foundation presented in the Orientation section creates a framework that supports the rest of the book. The description of the activities are clear and brought to life by the narrative account of the authors' experiences leading these groups. This book fills a gap in the counseling and boys literature.

I was in a group study with this book and it was wonderful in providing insight into my issues as an adult. The book walks you through looking at your past and how you've handled the hurt and pain that accumulates in family relationships. Rather than blaming the family it shows you how to grow through all of your experiences and begin to choose who you want to be rather than living out the programming you've often accepted from your past. This book expects you to take responsibility for your emotions and growth so don't expect it to just provide a feel-good-I'm-ok-pat-on-the-back. It is easy to work through and is broken down into daily sections for each week. Highly recommended and very insightful. It regularly identified the root causes of my issues. The real value is that the book shows God's attitude toward you regardless of how normal/abnormal your family might have been.

The Courage To Lead: Start Your Own Support Group is a complete "how to" manual for creating small groups that will prove invaluable supplements to hospital regimens, formal therapy, medical or pharmaceutical treatments for persons striving against addiction or to overcome mental illnesses. Hannah Carlson ably covers all aspects of forming, organizing, publicizing, and leading a group; how to get started with discussion subjects, study materials, speakers; shares ten characteristics of an effective group, as well as a Twelve Step and other programs; using the telephone and on-line support; and a "trouble-shooters" guide....

As a chaplain, I find that this book is the best aid I've found in which to facilitate small grief support groups that foster closeness, and the sharing of experiences and insights without judgment. It is Christ-centered, biblically-based, and brings the use of scripture into application for one's life now.

I suggest that anyone facilitating with this book make sure every participant has her/his own copy. The price makes that very easy to do. This is not "just another support group" guide. The outcomes in healing and friendship make this a very worthwhile experience.

Ms. Yale has taken a difficult subject...difficult issues regarding patients who are headed into difficult situations...and not only made strong advocacy in their behalf but has created a primer of how to do it.

I am about to start an Alzheimer's Support Group for patients in the early stages. While I was pleased that I was chosen by our local Alzheimer's Association; I was somewhat paralyzed at first by how to do it.

This is from someone who has done psychotherapy with individuals, families and groups for over fourteen years. The focus of most Alzheimer's Disease care has been support for the caregiver. I must admit I couldn't think about doing a suport group for patients until some recent interchanges with patients about their driving...or not driving.

Of course, I can lead a group of people with early stages of Alzheimer's Disease. I interview these people in my clinic all the time and have no trouble there.

Robyn Yale has given me a template. I intend to use as much information of this book as I possibly can.

I really enjoyed this book. It was an 'easy read' book that seemed to start out kind of slow. I was expecting the writer to go a little deeper into Kiona's mind and thoughts. But then I realized that because of Kiona's life experiences (or lack of), it wouldn't have been quite as effective to go much deeper into the thought process. This book really 'took off' once Kiona decided to join the Marine Corps. Once her 'life experiences' began, it was hard for me to put the book down. The ending was DEEP!! It was really just an awesome book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
