I just finished reading this book and I have to tell you, it was good. The way the author captures the life of this wonderful player. It includes many thins that not a lot of his fans know about him. Roberto and Sandy Alomar are great people, their parents did a wonderful job with all three of their kids. Sandy and Roberto are wondeful people, on and off the field. The book is wonderful.

I bought this to use in my 6th grade reading classroom. It is excellent to use to teach reading skills such as main idea, author's purpose, or summarizing. I put it in a center and students have 10 minutes to use the book for an assignment. Since it is at a lower reading level, students have success in building skills to use in higher level texts.

This book is a good addition to the grade 1-6 classroom library.

I will be going to Puerto Rico in May and although it doesn't have much information in the way of visiting Fajardo which is where I am going, it will do just fine. I am very much a traveler of off the beaten path. So this is perfect for me, it's informative, entertaining and without sounding rude at some points anti-tourist. Which is fine with me. :) So I would say if you're going to Puerto Rico pick up a book that's maybe a little more detailed for the part you're going and GET THIS ONE TOO!!

"San Juan" is rewarding and highly recommended reading

Ably translated into English by Peter Grandbois (Assistant professor of English at California State University, Sacramento) and provided with an informative Foreword by Antonio Skarmeta, "San Juan: Memoir Of A City" by Edgardo Rodriguez Julia is a combination travel guide and memoir of Puerto Rico's capital city. More than just a guidebook for tourists, "San Juan" presents a personalized perspective on the city's history and culture by a gifted author who has created a unique work of literary merit as he describes everything the city has to offer from cockfighting clubs and smoke-filled bars, to cabarets and street traffic. The reader is vividly introduced to a living city conflicted with its colonial past juxtaposed with aspirations for a 'commercial future'. Also available in a hardcover edition (9780299203702, $45.00), "San Juan" is rewarding and highly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in this fascinating, complex, colorful, and sometimes contradictory city.

A great collector's item for baseball history buffs

An excellent and well-written book. Van Hyning does a great service to the only baseball dynasty the Caribbean has ever known. The book, not only brings to light obscure anecdotes, but it also provides the reader with a wealth of baseball stats on the team througout its history. Few folks know that many of major league's most famous players got their start with the Santurce Crabbers. I've been fortunate to have grown up with the Crabbers and seen some of the history relived in the book. This book is especially important in 2004, the year the Santurce franchise was sold to another city in Puerto Rico.

This book is a recopilation of interviews to several very experienced individuals in Puerto Rico who have practice organic agriculture for years and in addition, know home remedies from plants.
It's full of great advice and creative ways to avoid plant disease, insects, etc, using natural non-toxic techniques! It's for the tropics, were insects abound ALL year (no snow to kill them in winter) but is not limited to the tropics. A must.

It's completely in Spanish.

Recomendado.

Conquistadors overrun by natives, nature's wrath on the high seas, various fiery floating infernos, and the occasional hostile takeover by dirty pirates are just a few of the historically accurate Puerto Rican adventures you'll learn about in this chronicle. I mean, holy crap this book is awesome. I'm pretty sure you can only get it in Puerto Rico. One of my colleagues smuggled it back to the mainland for me and I haven't stopped learning since.

I have read many books about slave trafficking and this book is at the top of my list. It's a must read for everyone. It's painful, but realistic.
