This book has now been released, and I wrote it. It is a departure from the other twelve titles I have written on the history of early A.A.'s spiritual roots and successes. However, a very grateful mother whose son recovered at the famous Alina Lodge under the tutelege of the legendary Gerry D. asked me to write about Gerry, the Lodge, and its unique long-term, non-permissive, structured residential rehab program. Geraldine is a veteran A.A., 90 years old, 51 years sober, and a strict disciplinarian. This is the story of her acclaimed program, unique methods, and unusual philosophy of treatment. Betty Ford, Dr. Abraham Twerski, and Col. Mel Schulstad (all veterans in the field) attest to Gerry's stature and unique program for the "reluctant to recover." People say, "if they can't make it elsewhere, send them to Alina Lodge." And this book will tell you why.

This is a great book but then again I'm prejudiced - I wrote it. I am currently working on a 2nd edition/printing with some updated and additional materials. More than 20,000 free copies have been distributed world-wide and over 100,000 people have read it on the net where it is available for free as either a download or read on-line.

Glenn Clark has written a poetic book which inspires people to go deeper in their faith. It is a call to beauty and depth for those who wish to lead a spiritual life. The book is focused around the image of the mountain deer whose footing is so sure that it can climb to the highest and rockiest peak of a mountain. Clark likens this to the Christian walk.
I highly recommend this book as one to get a hold of to keep, as you will want to re-read it at various times in your life.

A Historical Startup Point for Any and Every Recovery Program

This book is a must. For whom? For anyone starting recovery in A.A. or a 12-Step program; for anyone starting treatment in a regular or in a Christian-track program; for anyone starting therapy for addictions, including alcoholism; for treatment program leaders, counselors, and directors; for clergy, Christ-centered programs, church recovery leaders, psychologists, therapists, physicians. Why? Because very very few start recovery with a simple answer to where it all started, what the pioneers did, how their program evolved, and how to use it today. I'm directly involved in the educating aspect of providing answers. And I strongly urge the readers to acquire and use this book to introduce the founding and development of Alcoholics Anonymous as a benign starting point. They were winners then. Their ideas, if known, can help people to be winners today.

Lois W is the co-founder of the Al-Anon Family Groups, and is the widow of Bill W., co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Here she recalls her childhood and life in Brooklyn as the protected daughter of a leading doctor, and her romantic marriage to Bill during World War I. She also tells how AA and Al-Anon started and how they have brought hope to more than a million alcoholics and those who love them.
She recalls idyllic summer days in beautiful rural Vermont and long hiking and motorcycling trips with Bill. Later came darker times when she and Bill tried vainly to conquer his illness of alcoholism. Then Bill's spiritual awakening led to his meeting with Dr. Bob S. in Akron, Ohio, and the formation of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Lois tells how the Twelve Steps and the Twelve Traditions grew out of the early experiences of AA members and groups, and were later adopted by Al-Anon. Her steadfast support and love for Bill were important throughout their marriage, but she found she needed her own program of recovery. Out of this need and that of other spouses and children of alcoholics grew Al-Anon for alcoholics' families and friends, and Ala-teen for their children.
Here is the personal story of the co-founders of AA and Al-Anon as Lois recounts it, beginning with their struggles - some heartbreaking, some hilarious - all from her own unique perspective.

Being an annotated bibliography, this book's value lies primarily in the immensity and quality of titles it covers. I don't think there is a collection, a library, or a bibliography on the sources, roots, principles, and practices of A.A. and 12 Step programs that comes close to completeness as the reader will quickly see. The author includes the hundreds and hundreds of books he has researched, read, collected, and disseminated to history lovers, religious leaders, leaders in medicine and psychology, and countless AAs and their families. You see where Dick obtained the books. You see biographies of the leading people from whom he received a good many of the books. You see the 17 years of effort he has put into the search for all the many components of the A.A. program. This book will help you in your program, in your speaking, in your facilitating and counseling, in research and reference quests, and as a reliable compilation of sources by A.A.'s leading history and scholar on its history.

Karen Casey has been a part of my life since '83 through her daily meditation book, "Each Day a New Beginning". She has inspired me to laugh, cry and to ponder the possibilities. Her newest book, "The Miracle of Sponsorship", is an inspiration! She has encouraged me again to grow and stretch myself even further on my road to recovery. The insight of her collection of stories reminds me there are many paths I can take to achieve a balance in my life. There are many people out there struggling same as myself. Each one with stories of how they survived. All I have to do is to reach out. Sponsors have been a significant part of my life, whether I was aware of them or not. Karen has helped me to appreciate their importance in my life. I will never be alone on this road again. Thanks Karen for being one of those people. For giving me the hope that I need every day of my life!

this book is a must for anyone struggling with addiction/alcoholism. Joel
is direct, honest, and encouraging as he tells his own amazing story of
falling and rising from drug addiction.
as a mother of a struggling alcoholic I needed to read this book to be
aware and hopeful that a future is on the horizon for my daughter. Joel definitely delivered and taught me what true recovery is all about.
may anyone who need's hope find it in this book.
