Very interesting review of transportation in New Jersey

The review was pure nostalgia for me it brought back emeories of when I was growing up in Montclair NJ. I was interested to learn of the extent of the Trolley lines in and out of the town but there was not much of a follow up on the busses that suplimented the trolley lines. Recently at the garage on Lake St in Newark the roof caved in in the rear section but no effort was made to rescue the refurbished Yellow Coach circa 1937 from the bulding. I believe that the coach was allowed ot be destroyed when the bulding was torn down.

Must have book for NJ Transportation historians and students
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-09
This book is an excellent source for the student, railfan or transportion historian with an interest in the historical background of N.J. railroads. Subjects include Northeast railroads such as, the DL&W (Lackawanna), PRR, CNJ, Erie and Lehigh Valley that have since been abosorbed for the most part by Conrail. Some of the physical structures bulit by these rail pioneers still stand today, like the Hudson River Tunnels built by the PRR. The stories of how these projects were conceived and built is covered in this book. At the time, some of these projects were completed on the scale of the building of the Panama Canal. What is even more amazing is that rail infrastucture projects that were built almost 100 years ago still cary millions rail commuters to New York City's Pennsylvania station and suburban destinations. Although the book leaves off around in the early 1900's, the author is expected to have another book to be a continuation of this historical account to the present time. I must admit that once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down.

I love the Easyfinder laminated maps from Rand McNally. They are extremely durable, meaning I won't have to repurchase a map that gets torn, spilled on, or just plain worn out. Even better, I can mark my routes & destinations on them with dry erase marker, then just wipe off when no longer needed. Map detail is top notch, as you would expect from Rand McNally. 5 stars, definitely my favorite maps.

Well-written account of the early days of American soccer
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-30
A fsacinating account of the parallel development of American soccer and the textile industry in the northeastern United States in the late 1800s. Doucments how the ever growing wave of immigrants who were searching for a better way of life brought their skills to the textile industries in the West Hudson region of New Jersey and the New Bedford-Fall River region of southeastern New England. These immigrants also brought over their love for soccer, and soon these were two of the major hotbeds of soccer in the Northeastern United States.

This book covers both of these developments in extensive detail, shedding light on how the immigrant communities played a crucial role in preserving the game of soccer in this country at a time when the Amnerican colleges had abandoned soccer in favor of football. Well written, full of interesting stories, this book fills a major gap in the historical record of early American soccer.

A really helpful tool when planning a trip. Each entry has a list that front which includes contact info, how many rooms, extras, grounds, rates and directions. Then there's a writeup that gives you some flavor about the B&B, the owners, the interior design and the cooking. There are a set of indexes in the back that are really helpful for those seeking particular features (e.g. B&Bs with swimming pools, B&Bs that accept pets, near bodies of waters or mountain B&Bs) or particular location (B&Bs in the Finger Lakes region).

Tears and Smiles of Healing
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-13
A lesson in life and love that cannot be read without tears and smiles. The journey these parents have just begun to recover the son they have so tragically lost touched me so deeply that when I finished it I didn't want to talk to anyone because I didn't want to lose contact with their world. Mr. Lott has done his homework well. As a professional who sometimes must help parents through the initial moments of a child's death - I recognized the experience of Hugh and Laura. I applaud that he never once used the word "closure", because there never is any. But the strength to many healings will come from the memories of Michael that they and many others will gradually come to have the strength to share. There are no miracles to make it all better, but as they learned, there are a lot of small moments of pain that will get them through.

This is a book for parents, friends of parents, nurses, doctors...or just anyone who has ever loved a child.

Women in Perspective
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-28
A major reference covering literature on women, this bibliography is intended to stimulate the development of a thorough body of knowledge about women in specific cultures and culture areas. While there is a paucity of literature on women in many specific areas, the changing position of women in contemporary industrial societies has received considerable attention, so a lengthy section on sources dealing with various liberation efforts is included. The volume will be useful to anthropologists, sociologists, political scientists, and anyone interested in the varieties of female roles and expression and the position of women in the heirarchies of social organization in diverse societies.

Part I, "Geographical Topics," covers sources on areas in Africa, Middle East, Aisa, Europe, Oceania, South America, and North America. Part II, Subject Topics," covers such categories as primate studies, personality/psychological studies, marriage, divorce, child-rearing practices, pregnancy, birth control, sex and sexuality, rites of passage, role development, prostitution, homosexuality, misogyny, suffrage, women in literature, women in politics, and publications on sex discrimination.

Great for fans of Jersey or folklore
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-13
Henry Charlton Beck has done historians, folklorists, and folks who love New Jersey a great service with The Roads of Home and the rest of his series of books on old-time New Jersey, told by the folks who lived it. He captures people, places, and events of a New Jersey long since paved over with McMansions and strip malls, in the voices of those who remembered when New Jersey was farms and fields, grand old inns and rustic cabins, old railroads and older canals.

It was a New Jersey that once was, and in the pages of this and Beck's other books, it lives again.
