Re-Visions Of Shakespeare: Essays In Honor Of Robert Ornstein is an anthology in tribute of one of the most prominent Shakespeareans of the latter half of the twentieth century, Robert Ornstein. Ornstein was a past president of the Shakespeare Association of America; his more notable published works include "The Moral Vision of Jacobean Tragedy" and "A Kingdom for a Stage". The essays provided by a wide variety of literate authors include "Bianca and Petruchio: 'The Veriest Shrew[s] of All", "A Comic Vision of 'Othello'", and "Surprising the Audience in 'The Comedy of Errors'". Enhanced with literate and extensively footnooted selection of cutting-edge thought and wit on Shakespeare's genius, and Ornstein's keen mind, Re-Visions Of Shakespeare is very highly recommended reading.

An excellent collection of scholarly essays on the plays of William Shakespeare and a genuine tribute to Robert Ornstein. The feminist essays by Linda Woodbridge on the pastoral/As You Like It and Carolyn Brown on Taming of the Shrew are especially compelling. Other plays analyzed include Titus Andronicus, Othello, Macbeth, Comedy of Errors, Merchant of Venice, All's Well, Cymbeline, the Henry plays and the Richard plays. Other contributors include Barbara Hodgdon, Graham Holderness and Alexander Leggatt. In its breadth and depth, Gajowski's introductory chapter (on the state of Shakespeare studies today and the relationship of Ornstein's work to it) surpasses introductions typical of scholarly essay collections such as this one.

I had no idea I've been waiting for words of wisdom from a Native American Elder. But Strong Medicine is (forgive me) just what the doctor ordered.

Marion "Strong Medicine" Gould's story is a big one. She has suffered. She inspires. She laughs. She shares wisdom you'll want to reflect on. And she does not shrink down from saying what many of us think but might not say out loud. (Or in a book.)

I'm not a history buff, but I loved learning about Strong Medicine's life--precisely because of the way Hearth presented the information. I didn't feel like I was getting a lesson. I felt like I was making a new friend. A really compassionate and wise and funny one.

This book is a gem! I acutally felt each story as though it were "Stong Medicine" actually speaking directly to me. I felt all emotions, happy, excited, anticipation, and sad as she told this beautiful story.

Amy captured her and this book will truly capture you!

What a testimony of true Native American life.

After a several year hiatus, and a shift from Oxford University Press to the University of Virginia Press, Buildings of the United States returns with this fine entry.

The books in this series are expensive, and let me tell you why. First, they're written by top experts in this particular field, for the use of architectural historians for reference and research. The amount of work that goes into writing and publishing one of these books is enormous, so the prices reflect that fact. Let me be the first to tell you, however, that any of the books in the series, and this one in particular, are endlessly fascinating for serious amateurs as well. That's why I've shelled out the money for more than a few of them. Architecture guides just don't get any better. This series sets the standard.

Little Delaware is like a diamond (to quote Lofland), and art historian W. Barksdale Maynard has compiled a superb collection of important historic and modern sites for this book. Wilmington, Newark, New Castle and Dover all get the extended treatment you would expect, but the author also brings us comprehensive coverage of smaller towns and the rural landscape. There are 450 well-chosen entries here, all supported by interesting brief essays. There are about 250 small monochrome photographs that are adequate but not distinguished, mostly borrowed from other sources. The photography is pragmatic rather than artistic. The author introduces each district and town with a brief descriptive abstract, which includes reference to some of the important structures to which he does not dedicate a specific entry. This is a nice device for expanding the comprehensiveness of the survey. Trust me, you're favorites are here! For those of you who like age, Delaware contains some of the most ancient examples of European-American architecture in the original 13 states. Newark has probably endured the most destruction of its original colonial fabric of all Delaware towns, but there are many more examples across the state. And while Newark has suffered through haphazard development, it contains one of the loveliest public spaces in the country at the University of Delaware.

Keep in mind that this is a selective survey. Wilmington alone has a building stock to support a survey of over 1,000 buildings, so respect and appreciate the author's keen eye for what he believes we will enjoy. He's done a lovely job of selecting important and interesting sites for all tastes.

A true rarity for a book like this, the introductory essay is excellent, and a feature in itself. Don't just flip past it to get to the catalog. Maynard gives us an historical overview, a discussion of the geography and landscape, a description of the built environment, and an overview of important architects working in Delaware.

All this good stuff is framed by sidebars spaced throughout the text on important topics such as the du Pont family and the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.

Well constructed in cloth and nice thick-stock paper by UVA Press, this book is proof that the Society of Architectural Historians remains dedicated to this important series.

This book, as well as the others in the series, are an essential need in every Civil War historian's personal library. Whether you are a professional historian or a novice, this book is a must. No library is complete without it. Buy them all and buy the others as they come out. Roger Hunt has done a masterful job once again.

An essential referance for any Civil War Library. The amount of facts and photos will not be found in any other work. Hopefully Mr. Hunt will come out with the other volumes in the series on a regular and shorter time frame. Kudos and thankyou Mr. Hunt.

About the Book

Tia Delaware writes of her book "Wendy Tolvera, a woman nearly thirty, understands the importance of good facial skin but unfortunately that's not enough. She is suffering; the colorful lumps make her ache. Red ones, purple ones, all of them having colors that don't belong on any human face, these things she calls "cysts" stamp her facial skin giving her tremendous pain... Daniel Montgomery realizes the importance of skin, too. Deeply tanned in complexion, the athletic young man knows the significance of skin and he feels it has a crucial place in his existence. But he's not interested in the skin on his face. His target is the skin on his arms. And, at night in the alley across from Wendy's workplace, he burns the skin on his arms with the tall flame from his favorite silver candle. He likes the way it feels; he enjoys the colors that a good burn will bring. Thinking that they may have something in common, Daniel approaches Wendy about his plan. Together they leave for the town of Moss Bogs... Dr. Kathryn Slaughter, a college professor in her forties, has always had flawless skin on her face as well as all over her body. However, lately she has experienced an unusual stress and a portion of her skin, notably the skin on her hands, has reacted to the tension. Brought about most frequently by situations involving an incorrigible student, the abrasions on her hands and wrists have very little color. But after the irritated skin forces tireless scratching, the color on her hands become blood red. Now, she examines her job, her life. To get away from it all, Kathryn decides to take her first summer off since the death of her late husband Ben and travel to Moss Bogs, Texas... Also located in Moss Bogs is the world famous artist Charles William Pendleton III. This master has amassed a fortune by exhibiting works highlighting the human body and he pays careful attention to the skin. Renown as a colorist, he has worked for years with skin and colors wishing to make the phenomenal link - not with the color of the human on the outside but rather with the colors on the inside. He knows they are there, just below the skin. But after a series of distasteful experiments prove unsuccessful, he realizes the need for something ideal. Frustrated at failure, the artist is aware that Moss Bogs doesn't offer the special qualities he's looking for. However, now that Wendy, Daniel and Kathryn have come to town, Pendleton's prospects are brighter. Finally, to the newcomers' horror, he will have that unique perfection he desires."

The author has an interesting and new concept. We've always heard people use colors to express their moods or feelings, such as we often say "I Feel blue." This author takes this notion to its logical, albeit bizarre, end.

I highly recommend this book as worthy of a 5-star review!

Louise Peacock's first book is a tribute to her excellent work as a historian. Although written for children 9-12, it is a book that that will appeal to all ages. She has a rare talent for writing a simple story that evokes the reader to find depth and insight. Her unique approach of blending three story lines allows the reader to experience the Battle of Trenton from a wide range of perspectives. Truly a work of art, this book comes highly recommended.

Parables and explanations are illuminating and entertaining

This lovely book is divided into two sections: discourses and illustrations. The illustrations are so diverse and fascinating, you enjoy them as readily and easily as a child being read a bedtime story. At the same time these parables and stories offer answers to life's deepest mysteries: God (there is actually a section titled "Where is God"), is it possible for a person to understand God, how does one advance spiritually? While Bawa uses many charming illustrations and analogies drawn from life and nature, especially the animal kingdom, his underlying spiritual insights are completely consistent. He is clear and focussed on explaining that a person must become God centered to achieve genuine spiritual progress.

Because there are lots of short illustrations and parables, I keep picking up the book to randomly read one.

In summary, while the book has an inviting and approachable feel, it is actually addressing big questions.

Divine wisdom from the greatest Sufi of the 20th century.

Review Date: 1998-02-06
This masterpiece of Sufism combines over 100 short sufi stories and explanations with several formal discourses along with question and answer sessions. The teachings are exalted and unadulterated, gleaned directly from the spoken word as Bawa could neither read nor write. The book is AT LEAST on par with those of Rumi and more comprehensive in their explanations and examples. A MUST-read for anyone seriously interested in Sufism.

I read this book for my first women's studies course in college. The documents presented here provide interesting illustrations of women's lives and work and of ideas and conventions about women's roles in American society. It is a valuable resource for academics and teachers, and an interesting read for everyone else.

Its a shame that in many history classes, half of the human experience is virtually ignored. This is even more apparent in terms of anthologies of documents. Nancy Woloch has made an outstanding contribution in correcting this in her _Early American Women_.

The book is marvelous in the wide variety of documents it contains. There is census data from Spanish California, accounts of Iroquois women in government, oral histories of slaves (and mistresses), and some really fabulous material on the 19th century sufferage movement. The voices of women from all social classes can be heard here, from the colonial era to the Progressive period. It is very well rounded, and I will certainly be including it as a part of my curriculum.

The only short-coming I find in the book is its lack of statistical and visual documents. With this minor criticism said, I highly recommend this book to educators, especially those in the discipline of history.

I have several books from this publisher and this is one of the best. Due to the loss of so many homes and businesses from the purposed Tocks Island Dam project, this book is an excellent record of what once was in the Pocono area along the Delaware on the PA side. The photo captions provide the text in this series and they are both informative and well written.
