Like all of Fradin's books, this one is well written, informative, and interesting. My children both enjoyed listening to this as we studied colonial times, and liked the well chosen black and white illustrations. We especially enjoy the quotes from writings of the period at the start of each chapter, as they give a flavor for how real people of the time viewed things. We have read other accounts of Henry Hudson which seemed to include more information about his earlier life than the biographical sketch in this book, while Fradin states that little is known, but it is difficult to know for certain who is giving the correct information, as conjecture often gets labeled as fact in history books. The section on Hudson is only a one-page excerpt from the book anyway. We greatly appreciate the way this author makes information understandable to children through wise use of vocabulary, but never 'talks down' to them, and includes enough complex terminology to stretch their comprehension of history.

My father purchased a copy of this book when it was first published. I later bought my own, used, copy off of Amazon.com 10 years ago. It is a great source for information on Philadelphia area passenger rail lines. Unfortunately, I have not been able to purchase a copy of the update. In 1982, an update, consisting of several pages, was published, it was given to my father so he does not know how it was initally obtained.
If you want to learn the history of the commuter, trolley, and subway lines for Philadelphia, this is a source material worth seeking.

This is a modern reprint of Ebenezer Denny's 1860 vocabulary of the Delaware Indian language (Lenape). It is a very small volume, and there is no phonetic key. An interesting book from a historical linguistics persepective or if you'd like to learn a few words of Delaware, but don't buy it expecting to learn how to speak the language. The book includes historical background and the author's original letters.

The best all-around reference on U.S.-China relations in World War II

The materials available in English on the China theatre in World War II would fill many bookshelves -- memoirs, official histories, biographies, and stories of individual operations. Many stories are now available for the first time on websites.
As good as these "parts" of the story may be, they have not yet been combined into a satisfying "whole." A comprehensive account of the U.S.-China alliance, not to mention the theatre, has not yet been written. This is largely due to the lack of sources from the Chinese side. For reasons related to China's postwar history, accounts have been few, late, or scrubbed and filtered. More recent works have not yet been translated into English. It is likely to be some decades that we can see the struggle in the theatre from all points of view.
In this void, I have found "The Eagle-Dragon Alliance" by Wesley M. Bagby to be the best all-around reference source, indispensible as one writes.
There are fatter books on those shelves, but none are as broad in scope, reliable in details, and succinct. That some of his conclusions can now be modified, thanks to the progress in historical research since the book was published in 1992, does not diminish the book's standing.
Bagby wrote, "Seldom does a historian come upon a richer mix of colorful personalities, dramatic action, Byzantine intrigue, and momentous historical issues." Seldom has one historian built such a sturdy frame for future research.

This is a modern reprint of three eighteenth and nineteenth-century vocabularies of the Minsi (Munsee) Delaware Indian language (one recorded by president Thomas Jefferson, who had a keen interest in linguistics). It is a very small volume, and there is no phonetic key. An interesting book from a historical linguistics perspective or if you'd like to learn a few words of Delaware, but don't buy it expecting to learn how to speak the language.

Clifton wrote only two other books, neither academic. The Figure in Film defies those who say there are no direct parallels between film language and natural language. Like Erich Auerbach's similarly magisterial Mimesis, this book develops very complex understanding from its simple seminal premise: in this case, that the effects and forms of classic film techniques recapitulate those ancient verbal tricks taught to Greek and Roman orators. Examples of the verbal devices range from metaphor to homoioteleuton. Although he offers no more search-help than a pair of indices (the book's great failing), detailed illustrations and efficient descriptions of film scenes make this a rewarding read for anybody interested in a pragmatic picture of the brain processing words and images.

This is one of the best location guides for fishing I have ever read. They list the Tackle shop and resturants for the fisherman, plus things for the rest of the family to do, to make a fishers trip a family vacation. If you are going to fish the Delaware valley this book is a must.

Covers the strenghts and weaknesses of the Single Wing. He uses linemen slants and read blitzes to control the high power single wing offense. His book is full of diagrams and is user friendly. It is under 100 pages to read and most of them are diagrams.
Warning, this book will not help you stop all single wing teams. Single wing teams use a lot of misdirection plays. Some teams stick with the basic misdirection plays and others come up with their own. I know that because I used to coach a single wing team and I came up with my own. So be ready, because not all teams are the same.
I still think it is a great book and I highly recomend it.
If you are looking for a book that will help you stop most single wing offenses this is the book for you.
It is a good book from youth level to college level.
