wait for the non fiction versionReview Date: 2008-01-14
If you know french well... by all means read it!!!Review Date: 2008-09-23
The level of langage reaches a quality rarely seen. I dont think somebody who doesnt master french very well could enjoy this book though.
Gilles Leroy plays with the words, their meanings, their sounds in an awe-inspiring way!
What you need to know is that Gilles Leroy does not pretend to write a biography, it is a book inspired by Zelda & Scott Fitzgerald and he suggests a fiction based on their lives.
Read it as you would read a fiction novel, you will enjoy it even more since it will remind you of people who actually existed.
As far as I am concerned I like this new approach. Usually it is either one. Either it is a fiction novel, or it is a biography that claims to say the truth (but a writer always guesses anyway).
This new gender could confuse, but I really found it interesting.
That said, this story is amazingly complex, sensitive and intelligent.
This is the story of a sensitive woman... sensitive and maybe too expressive. Thus she was regarded as crazy. But the author will convince you that she was not.
This is the story of a woman who has been abused and used.
This is the story of a woman who abused and used too.
This is the story of a woman who had everything to succeed to begin with, who chose another destiny full of passion and fame, and who ended forgotten and penniless.
I want more books like that!!
upcoming bio on Zelda Fitzgerald and Edouard JozanReview Date: 2008-01-22
Kendall Taylor's new book Perilous Interlude (working title) concerning the affair of Zelda Fitzgerald and Edouard Jozan promises to be an important and fascinating addition to literary biography. Her approach is to examine the story of Zelda Fitzgerald's relationship with Jozan and the impact it had on Scott Fitzgerald's and Zelda's writing, the lives of the Fitzgeralds and their marriage. Although it is well known that Zelda was in some way involved with Jozan, and that this episode was important to the Fitzgeralds' relationship, the exact nature of Zelda and Edouard's involvement has never really been settled. Until now there has not been wide agreement about the importance of this involvement to the Fitzgeralds' lives and works. Taylor admits that she did not appreciate the importance of this episode when she wrote Sometimes Madness is Wisdom, Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald; A Marriage, her previous well received study of the Fitzgeralds. She has since determined that Jozan was the initial inspiration for the character of Gatsby, and the affair a key element in Fitzgerald's writing of the novel. She is able to compare Jozan to characters in the Fitzgeralds' writing in ways that no previous scholar has been able to do.
Through acquaintance with Jozan's daughter and son, Taylor has unearthed previously unavailable biographical details about Jozan, his life, and his relationship to the Fitzgeralds as well as many previously unpublished photographs. On the basis of this new knowledge, she now believes that Zelda was deeply involved emotionally with Jozan and that this involvement influenced the rest of the Fitzgeralds' life together -- that it poisoned their relationship and instigated the deterioration that led to Zelda's hospitalization for mental illness.
Taylor's discoveries about the centrality of Edouard Jozan to the Fitzgeralds' lives and writing will provide a better understanding of one of America's greatest novelists.

Wickman's disrespect for Osceola'a legacyReview Date: 2000-08-07
Ivy-covered researchReview Date: 2000-07-13
Gee, I thought it was great...Review Date: 2002-03-17
It's not a very theoretically-oriented text, but as a biography of the most famous Seminole who ever lived -- I though it made Osceola jump off the page. Only note of warning: this does contain a rather graphic couple of chapters on both Osceola's decapitation by his doctor immediately following his death and the exhumation of his corpse in the sixties. Sensitive readers should be aware of this.
BTW, Dr. Wickman is currently the Director of the Department of Anthropology and Geneaology at the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and was formerly the state of Florida's historian. I'm not saying this makes her unimpeachable as an historian, but I really do think she knows what she's talking about.

Great Book...More like this please.Review Date: 2002-10-24
I unlike the other reviewer think the collection of photos is wonderful. The photos helped allow me to 'see' what the author was talking about.
Great Book, and I recommend it highly. If you are interested in regimental histories this one is wonderful.

Not accurate Review Date: 2006-11-26
That said, the author does at least describe a lot of great trails in Alabama, and he explains how to get to the trailheads. If you want a book to explain where you could go hike, this will be useful. If you want a great guide to the trails themselves... Well, this book may leave you hiking for hours in the cold dark of night wondering why you are not yet at a destination the author claims should take only a fraction of that time to reach.
I feel that I should add that because this book is ambitious and the author appears sincere in his effort to describe the beauty of Alabama trails, I don't want to be too negative towards him. Nevertheless, I am still reluctant to rely on (or recommend) this book for specific details about backcountry trails. Finally, I suggest that were the author to add gps coordinates to his trail descriptions, then anyone using his book would be able to determine for certain whether any apparent inconsistency between the trial and the book was due to a miscalculation on their part or on the author's.
