I have been managing a synchronous language learning program for the past two years. When we first started, I wasted a lot of money (and time) on e-learning books which had nothing at all to say about synchronous virtual classrooms. Two years ago, the most anyone had to say about synchronous was that it would be "the wave of the future." I needed practical, tested suggestions for best practice in setting up, preparing for and conducting live classes over the Internet, and these books gave me exactly zero input.

Hofmann's Synchronous Trainer's Survival Guide" is exactly what I needed two years ago. It's sufficiently general to accomodate differences in platform design and functionality, which a focus on best practice in optimizing the enjoyment and learning value of online classes. It's a slim book - you can easily read it in an afternoon, but filled with concise and informative bulletted lists with titles like "Using your voice", "Language tips", "Gauging participation", "Reading participant cues", etc.

Some of our teachers have had trouble making the transition from the traditional classroom to the virtual classroom, and I've been looking for a resource like this to give them pointers, and to let them realize that the frustrations they're experiencing are not unique to them. I'm ordering copies of this book for all of our teachers and I expect that they'll be going back to it again and again.

the real deal on internet dating
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-04
what I liked about this book is that it's not a "how to" about internet dating, and it doesn't try and give advice. instead, this book gives you an overview of the whole online dating phenomenon, peppered with "fly on the wall" anecdotes from people whose experiences aren't always the most positive. a real-world view of online dating as told from a journalist's perspective.

A silly, pointless book

A pretty-much content-free collection of anecdotes: this person met a few total creepazoids online, this other person met the love of her life, this third person finds online dating to be a handy way to cheat on his wife, and this little piggy went to market. Is there a point? Are there any insights? Is there any real information to be found? Not that I could see.

quite a contrast to an auction site like eBay

Orr delineates one of the few surviving business models from the dot com time. She describes how Match, Yahoo Personals, Date, eHarmony and others have attracted many. In fact, Match having garnered over 8 million by the time of the book's writing in 03. The basic human urge to procreate has led to these sites being some of the few that could charge membership fees and get away with it.

She gives case studies of several people that she interviewed. Only some of these found what they were seeking, by the book's end. But that is real life, eh?

The book points out that the biggest problem faced by Match and Yahoo is that their most successful customers meet partners and leave the websites. No repeat business from them. Fundamentally different from eBay or Amazon. Plus, the major dating sites have no feedback on their members. Quite unlike the auction sites, where this is now regarded as standard and necessary. Yet anecdotally, the amount of exaggeration in a dating site's member's description of himself or herself is probably more so than a typical item description in eBay.

A Breezy, unique read

Orr skillfully weaves together stories and data into a poignant narrative about internet dating. Lonely-hearts, Middle America Moms and dating gurus populate this entertaining landscape of love hunters. And its windows onto the world of Muslim dating are fascinating. Highly recommended.

I don't think I could give it a more enthusiastic recommendation. I just read here that another reviewer compared it to an episode of Sex and The City, and that is very true. Like the TV show this book, has many hilarious and very moving stories of the ups and downs of the dating game that anyone can relate to. Unlike Sex and the City, it's not all about spoiled New York City girls. There are stories of people from the heartland looking for love, middle aged small town people who have been divorced three times before finding true love online, lonely grandmothers, even people in China. The book also manages to impart some useful advice about writing your online dating profile, and about which sites you might want to consider joining.

Justification for Library Services for Children and Youth
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-29
This book consists of 12 well-written accounts by various authors about successful library services and programs for children and youth. The authors of each of the articles provide facts and examples of the differences that libraries have made for the people in the areas they serve. Read this book for two reasons: for the examples of positive contributions to cite whenever libraries and their services are being labeled as ineffective, and to be reminded why librarians do what we do for children and youth to make a difference.

"The Ultimate Mans Guide to Internet Dating" is the best.

Review Date: 2004-11-25
During the first week of September 2004 I finally decided to find the lady of my dreams through internet dating and subscribed to eHarmony with no results for one month.
I decided to learn more about and purchased six books on Internet Dating including "The Ultimate Mans Guide to Internet Dating" which is the one that is helping me the most. This book is geared towards men and it is based on 18 tips which had made me aware of very important details that otherwise I had missed or learned only after long time experiences.
In addition, it gave me great advice and direct help with my profile which I feel now reflects very well my personality in a way that is very effective.
Even if I am a Latino, 65 years old and I have some unusual activities for my age, I am receiving plenty of replies from quality American ladies proper to my personality and life style.
The book gave me sight to pick the two best online companies in the US.
It didn't took me a lot of my time to read important effective information in this "Ultimate Mans Guide to Internet Dating". Some of the other books wasted plenty of my time with useless blah blah blah information.
In my opinion, this is the very best of the six books I bought.

Perfect for guys only!

It was amusing to read all the reviews on this book and see the wide diversity of opinions. I know one of the authors (yes, they are real guys who happen to have the same name). He received over 350 unsolicited emails from women in about four months and had dates every other night. I saw the emails, and the pictures of the women who sent them. Some were average, but many were very attractive; a few were supermodel types. He's a real man's man who actually met and married the perfect woman for him after he wrote this book. He didn't intend the book for women (they've got plenty of their own), and he didn't intend it to help guys find some woman's notion of romance. He intended it to help guys find whatever they want from online dating. So what's the problem?

waste of money

This book is a complete waste of money. It contains no information that a reasonably intelligent man (or woman) couldn't easily figure out on his or her own, or discover on internet dating sites for free. The authors are believers in astrology, and devote a substantial chunk of the book to providing astrological information. As you can probably tell, I do not believe in astrology, but despite that, the astrological information in the book would also be very quickly available at no cost to any minimally proficient Google user.

I bought this to review it for content and usability, I can't believer what I read. This book has nothing useful in it! It don't tell you anything about what to say or even how to figure out what type of woman you want let alone how to get her to respond to you. It's just full of useless information like horoscopes I culdn't believe it, it even had the chinese horoscope taken off of some menu in a restaurant! This book doesn't do anything buy take your money and waste a tree.

Not much of value...

Review Date: 2005-01-25
The closest to valuable information this book has is: The % of emails you received compared to the number of times your profile is viewed. There is nothing else here that isn't already listed on most dating web sites themselves. Don't waste your money, just read the information provided by the site(s) that you are a member of.

It also appears that this book was sponsored by two specific companies (3 sites) as their name appears all over this book, and the 100's of other sites are ignored.

I was surprised to see that this book was only written by two people. It has the disjointed feel of being written by a large group of people. It jumps from talking down to people only looking for sex, to praising how easily you can get sex, to talking down to people whom consider religious compatibility important. And that's just one example. I truly thought that it was written by at least five different authors, and edited by people who didn't speak to each other.

A stated in some of these other reviews, you will not get anything from this book that you could not easily access online. I was hoping for some information like a quick reference to icons on WebEx, how to set up and save polls, etc. Nothing like this there. You could write this book after spending about 2 hours reviewing online materials.

A good introduction for the uninformed.

My company signed on to webex. I figured I should know a little more just in case people need help.

Overall it's a decent book. It will give you a back ground on the product and it will walk you through the steps of setting up a meeting. It explains the tools such as white boards that are available.

The book even breaks the meetings into types such as training, sales and and product marketing.

There is one chapter for administrating it which I am not sure it was needed as the admin stuff is rather small.

One thing I thought was odd was a chapter on the top 10 question for tech support and then there was a FAQ. Seemed like a duplication of information.

Overall its a good book but I am not sure it's needed especially as a reference. Webex has many online resources and even offer training that covers much of the information presented.

This book could answer questions about webex, especially if you are considering it.

Typical "for Dummies" Pap

I purchased this book because I was scheduled to do online training through WebEx. This book was absolutely no help at all. It essentially gave a brief exposure to the WebEx system and interface and then filled the rest of the pages with a bunch of nothing.

This is typical of every "for Dummies" book I have seen. My recommendation for anyone planning on using WebEx as a trainer or a student: Don't waste your time or money on this book. You'll do far better downloading WebEx' online training resources.

The only reason I bought this book was that it is the only book on WebEx I could find. I just wish someone had warned me not to waste my money as I am warning you.

This book is REALLY for dummies

Webex is a fantastic tool, to be sure. But this book is a waste of time. The online learning tools at webex.com are a lot better that this book. It reads more like an ad for the product that a useful reference guide. The product is so easy to use that this book is really unnecessary.

Now, if you REALLY are a dummy, this book might be helpful to you in some ways (so I gave it 2 stars). But I'd recommend you use the online tutorials at Webex, or join one of their online live meetings.

Perfect! Just What I Needed.

This book was great. I'm new to WebEx, in fact new to web conferencing. I was a little intimidated at first, but got through my first few web conferences without any problems. (The Webex interface is really simple and intuitive.) What this book did was empower me with the knowledge of how to run really effective meetings online. Yes, it covers the basics well, but the real value was in learning all the additional capabilities Webex has available. For example, I learned about the integrated audio conferencing controls, the simple integration with outlook and some awesome video conferencing capabilities. As with all the Dummies book, its a quick read (gotta love the big font size and pictures).

I recommend this book to anyone who has purchsed Webex or is is close to a web conferencing purchase.

None of this is TOTAL BS! My pal Kristoff told me about this book, and ever since I've been using AOL to get the ladies online! I'm chatting with 5 girls right now, thank goodness for the "tile windows" option, eh?!?

Dan Theman is really The Man! If I met him, I'd say "Dan, you are The Man, Man!"

Yeah Boyee, this is one awesome guide, and not just for dudes trying to score chicks. It's also great for you ladies out there, to buy and to study. Emphasis on the STUD if you know what I mean.

In conclusion, this is one rockabilly book, and I'm not joking when I say it was totally worth the $1.00 I paid for it. Heck, the first half alone is worth $.50, so go figure! You do the math! I'm too busy meeting foxy internet ladies and moving beyond cybersex!

After having the misfortune of buying this book(?) and reading the first paragraph I had to toss my cookies. The author comes across as a totally arrogant jerk. It's too bad that one of more of the women that had the 'misfortune' of meeting him haven't written their own rendition. If they would, I'd be at the head of the line to purchase it.

I gotta say being the girlfriend of a perverted 'man', 'animal', 'dog', whatever you want to call him, is not easy. Maybe I should write a book on how to keep your perverted man under your wings. This book has great jokes and awesome to read on long plane rides, laugh real loud and annoy your neighbours. Vulgar, very much so. I'm surprised your mom didn't wash your mouth with clorox detergent yet, babe.

I originally bought this book as a gag gift for a buddy of mine but it turned out to be a lot more than I expected. Dan is hilarious - sure he gets a little raunchy here and there but anyone with any sense can tell that it's all in good fun. I think some of the other people who wrote bad reviews on this book either didn't really read it or are from the religious right or something. Anyway - I loved it. My only complaint is that he hasn't written anything else - at least not that I know of... and I guess I wouldn't have minded if the book was longer - I was done before I knew it.

But a 5-star metaphor!!!

There is only one thing "wrong" with this book: it points men and women in the wrong direction, outward instead of inward. Psychosexually speaking, in this day and age of widespread rape, domestic violence, and sexually transmitted diseases, it behooves each potential Lover, whether male or female, to "come within" and cease "looking for It" out there, which is to say, treat every "male" online as a Voice, not a physical person, and inner Voice for astute women, the Voice of her own Animus (see Jung's books); the reverse is true for men, the inner Voice belonging to the Anima. Within EACH individual, the inner marriage of both Anima and Animus results in personal peace, happiness, and even Joy. Thank you for the 5-star metaphor!
