This recovery stuff is serious business

Review Date: 2001-10-09
Yes, it really is a game of life and death. This book shows, though, that you can still have a laugh or two along the way. The stories which James tells distill the lessons of recovery down to good old boy stories you might have heard on the porches and at the picnics of the Georia country society.
The sincerity with which he sheds the trappings of ego and explores new heights of self depracation, are nothing if they are not touching. He tells in the book that it started as a way for him to leave something for his children as a way of explanation that the man they knew as father was not alcoholically absent from their lives because of anything they did.
The home spun philosophy and rural anecdotes may proove hard for some to grasp in their symbolic entirity. The language of the heart and honesty that is employed is understandable to those before and after him who choose not to drink or use, one day at a time.
This is a fine piece of work and belongs on any person with an interest in recover's bookshelf.

Something new, but not unexplored

This book brings a fresh look to the problems the country of Colombia has with illegal drugs, but still, it seems lacking in some of its depth of research. While yes, the main problem is in Colombia, I believe this book was lacking in its exploration of other countries, or people, who were perhaps involved in the drug trade. Nevertheless this book did a wonderful job showing what it wanted to show. It showed the drug problem in Colombia and how its not the Colombian's problem simply, but the whole world's.

An important book from a number of angles.

What Shays did for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in *Achilles in Vietnam,* Dr. Jane Lilienfeld does for alcoholism in her new book, *Reading Alcoholisms.* Lilienfeld's book reviews some familiar works of English literature dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries through the lens of what we have come to know about alcoholism, both the "disease process" itself and its somewhat predictable effects upon alcoholics, their families, and others close to them. At the time the works Lilienfeld focuses upon were written, there was no body of alcoholism theory; nevertheless, the authors of these works reproduced in painful detail what would later become familiar trajectories of personal and familial decline. One of the points Lilienfeld scores is to show that alcoholism as we understand it existed BEFORE we understood it. However crude and ineffective present treatments for them might be, alcoholism (and, by extension, other addictions) are hardly the iatrogenic diseases some occasionally claim. Lilienfeld allows her readers to think inductively about evidence in the texts. One might sometimes wish for her to validate our thinking by drawing more conclusions for us. But that's a small gripe. This is a fine book.

Review from 'A Recovering Alcoholic' sent to author to keep anonymity

This book, "The Recovering Alcoholic's Companion," is a good complement To the full basic text of A.A., "Alcoholics Anonymous," also known as the "Big Book." Instead of stories it contains a few short leads (personal stories of recovery), and a number of "meetings" written as individual shares on various topics. These are not dialogs, as discussion meetings usually do not permit them (that would be "cross-talking," which the author scrupulously avoids). "Freezing" these dialogs means that the book has the strength that you can go back and ponder what was said. To help that, there are questions for you to think about. However, this has the drawback that each of these meetings never changes. That is not a problem if you take the book on a trip or a flight, as I did, but after several readings, this reviewer was left wanting more different material. Perhaps the author will write several sequels, sort of like the "Best of the Grapevine." It would also be nice, but not necessary, if the "Companion" were printed in a pocket version, the same size as the pocket edition of "Alcoholics Anonymous," and if the cover were less obviously a book that a recovering alcoholic would be reading. But hey! If your sobriety is feeling a bit shaky, who cares? You might find that the person in the airplane seat next to you is a friend of Bill W., too! Overall, a very good first effort. I give it four stars.

This book is about a eleven year old boy named Tony. His father is a truck driver and he is gone for along time because he does not know how to deal with her drinking. His mother, an alcoholic, got very ill one day and the next day she is mysteriously healthy because she is an alcoholic. Tony has to take care of his mom and Christy his four year old sister. Tony has joined a baseball team and he is the star pitcher.

Tony thinks that he might not be able to play baseball because of the problems at home. You can not put this book down! This book deals with family problems and how it is like to grow up with a family that treats you like dirt. If you get a chance to go to a library look it up you will not be disappointed! He tries his best to keep all his anger inside of him and it is very difficult for him because he does not know how long he can keep all that anger and he wounders when it will end. His mother stays at the hospital for two days. The first time she visit the hospital was because she was drunk. She hit her head on a little table and she was bleeding very bad so Tony had to call 911. Will you find out what is going to happen at the end?

This is a good book to read. If you haven't read this book you are missing out on a great book.

I agree with my review. The book Sarah T. Portrait of a teenage alcoholic was a really good book. I really enjoyed reading about how Sarah struggled through everyday life and the problems that she faced everyday. It was really touching to read about her schedule of everyday life and how she coped with a new family and her drinking problem. It was very hard for her to finally admit that she did indeed have a problem. Even her mother wouldn't admit that she had a problem. But in the end it all worked out and she got the help she needed along with a few friends! It made me open my eyes and understand that teen-age alcoholism is a serious problem in America today. This is an awesome book for people of all ages.

An excellent broad-spectrum coverage of topical alcohol-related research. I found very concise information about changes in American drinking patterns in by Hilton & Clark. I especially enjoyed the clear explanation of research methods used which, in other papers of epidemilogical research, is not as clear. Also, the chapter about social processes very helpful for understanding concepts related to primary prevention.

I bought this book along with many others at a clearance sale at a book warehouse. What a wonderful surprise! What a great book for teaching mood to children! (I teach sixth grade) I felt on edge throughout the book. I am also enamored by books that challenge our concepts of reality. This was a provocative book on many levels... one that you will find yourself thinking about for days after you read it. I recommend it highly.
