Fatal Addiction

Every once in a while a book comes-out at just the right time. Everett Beal's Fatal Addiction is one such book. Amid a fictional story which is based upon true-life scenarios and rather scary possibilities, the author relates the problems of drug usage, both legal and illegal, in our modern world.
From the short novel's blood-chilling start, through a course of events that only a veteran Rph (Pharmacist) could assimilate and detail, a nice love story, and an eventual surprising ending, Mr. Beal does a nice job of making the reader aware of drug-related problems that everyday people think nothing about. He also puts forth the possibility of terrorists getting to the American drug supply and killing us by the thousands. (The notion is not far-fetched.)
The book's hero, a local pharmacist named Tyler, inadvertently becomes involved in a thrilling Homeland Security plot to foil the manufacturing and illegal distribution of an altered and super-deadly form of oxycontin. Along the way he finds love with Miriam, hope, despair, and then hope again. As the book cover promises, it is a tale of intrigue guaranteed to set the reader's mind to thinking about once negligible possibilities, in the new age of international terrorism.
This is a novel about a couple finding each other and rebuilding their lives and belief in love, after two separate sets of horrific circumstances. However, service to the town and nation are their top priority.
This book should be required high school reading for juniors and seniors. Without being preachy, the tale demonstrates the corrupting possibilities which drugs deviously hold over citizens from age 1 to 100, well-intentioned or not. As Mr. Beal, from Griffin, Georgia, is personally fond of saying, "Addiction knows no classes, nor boundaries." You can believe him, and will. Buy the book.

Alcoholism and Women

Review Date: 2005-10-19
The Female Alcoholic explores how physical, financial, social and psychological factors influence the progression of alcoholism in women, their access to treatment and their chances of success with abstinence. The book describes how society's attitude on female alcoholism plays an important part in why women become addicted and why they stay addicted. Factual information is used to eliminate the myths and stereotypes surrounding alcoholism in women and personal stories are told by recovering alcoholics to give the disease a "human face". The Female Alcoholic is an excellent reference for women, their families and healthcare professionals. --from book's back cover

"E. Jean Carroll has the shock and snazz value that Tom Wolfe had years ago. She is one of a kind."
---Jim Harrison, Author of "Legends of the Fall"

"Jean Carroll has a wonderful ear for how people actually talk and a wonderful eye for the subtle, telling detail, she is documenting a portion of society which has hardly been touched. The book is a pleasure to read and offers many illuminations. I couldn't put it down."
---David Black, Author of "Murder at the Met"

"Female Difficulties is extremely funny and slightly frightening. Savage and wise, Jean Carroll reminds me of Terry Southern at his best."
--- Richard Price, Author of "Clockers"

"Jean Carroll is a wild writer, and a racy and experienced woman."
--- Hunter Thompson, Author of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"

"Rowdy but vulnerable, sharp-eyed and very very funny."

A breath of fresh air in 'recovery' information.

A well written book, designed to cover many issues and circumstances in recovery. It has helped me deal with issues and feelings that I may push aside that can cause relapses and stumbles in my day by day journey into renewal.

In addition to being highly personal it is also spiritually based, making it a wonderful guide to assist anyone in recovery from other substances (and addictions) beside alcohol and drugs. I think it would be a great tool in recovery/rehab groups too.

If you're looking for a COMPLETE interactive guide to recovery that covers everything from emotional, physical, spiritual and personal health and restoration, this is the book for you!

DEFINITELY A "MUST READ!"

It's funny. It's smart. It's hard to grasp at the start but the plot tightens up after the first 50 pages. It's got a senile bent making it's characters operatic. I've learned to appreciate this kind of thing. It drops the right phrase in their mouths with comic timing. It lampoons the Reagan administration by someone with the age and credits to do a proper job of it. Fifty pages left; see you.

"Finally Broken made me look back on my own past and recognize all the stupid, crazy things I did and to question the cause. It made me face things that were done to me, and realize that I can finally face my hurts and learn from them. I can come out of my dark places a better and stronger person. Finally Broken will help others to face their previous mistakes and move on to the next part of their lives; recognizing that, through God's grace, you are not your past, you are your future."

"Truly inspirational! Finally Broken reminds us all that the first step to solving our problems is turning our life over to God. Rena's life is an excellent example of how God's grace can turn years of shame and sadness into a life of hope and renewal. Through this book, anyone dealing with addictions and other personal problems will find common ground with Rena and, hopefully, follow the same path to salvation and renewal."

"If you grew up like me, in the 1960's and 1970's, this book will have a big time connection for many from our period. Parental attitudes and the new freedom kids were exploring made for explosive family dynamics. Finally Broken is a true snapshot of those times and the stresses that tore at the fabric of our families and our nation as a whole. Rena Montford found the ultimate relationship with a Father who truly has all the answers, knows our every need and loves us unconditionally. Just read it!"

Pastor David Gillian

One of the best self-help books ever written
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-04
If you have even been in a less-than-satisfying relationship, and particularly if you have ever had difficulty separating from such a relationship, this may be the book for you! Of the 9-10 highly recommended self-help books I read during a very difficult time, this one was the most insightful and most helpful to me. In fact, looking back at it after a year in a very satisfying and fullfilling relationship, I think the first 9 chapters almost "saved my life....or at least, my sanity!"This is an extention to Halpern's highly successful "How to Break Your Addition to a Person." I found the present book first and never felt the need to read the first book, although I later glanced at it. I think the first few chapters in the present book probably capture the essence of the first book. The book in HIGHLY readable. I think if this book were more widely read, there would be MANY more people in happier relationships.
