As abuse of prescription medication increases, both among youth and adults, a better understanding of the drugs involved is important. This book provides many different levels of information about the subject in a concise and clear manner. Very nicely done.

This book includes very practical guidelines and charts and record forms for the therapist to apply to the patients with substance abuse. The format of the book is clear, precise and very readable !

It is clear from the preface that Robert Drexler loves Colombia. To that end, this allows the author the license to speak of the many wrongs in Colombia with absolute honesty. Drexler is a decent American...he correctly points out the grave mistakes in U.S. drug policy in Colombia. However, the interesting quality of this book is the insider information, the first hand accounts of history from someone serving in the American Embassy during the start of the war on drugs in the 1970's. Drexler is an outstanding diplomat. Additionally, his book is superbly written and extremely engaging.

This is a handbook which I believe is needed in our community. With so many suffering from various forms of addiction, this book seems to be an important tool to complete healing for victims and their families. It really opened my eyes to the lies and truth behind this addiction. If you or someone close to you is struggling, this is a MUST READ book.

This book offers a thoughtful and thorough analysis of drug abuse among youth, plaguing communities today. Accompanying the problem identification are strategies for community diagnosis, intervention and funding. This step by step guide outlines through figures and exhibits the approaches that may lead to successful social development in communities. Model goals and objectives, timeframes and evaluation tools are especially useful. Materials are timely and real-world, ready for us to put them to use.

As someone who has read *many* books, both clinical and popular, on the subject of eating disorders, I often bemoan the fact that this wonderful book has now gone out of print. Through comparing eating disorders with the compulsive exercise phenomenon it provides insights into both in a manner that books on each topic alone never quite do.

Anyone interested in adding to their eating disorders library would be well advised to search out a used copy of this seemingly forgotten book, in that the insights provided go considerably beyond what is found in most books on the topic.

Those wishing to understand compulsive exercise will also find this book a wonderful place to begin, as the comparisons with eating disorders are equally instructive.

For those wishing insight into the combination of the two...once again, a great book on the subject.

As a result of it's novel approach, and it's accessable writing style, one of the more intriguing and thought provoking books on EDs / compulsive exercise out there.

I had recently gotten out of a relationship with a conman and I found this book helped me to forgive myself. It is well written and I had a hard time putting it down. It is amazing how you can look back and realize all the red flags you disregarded. I could relate even though the person I was involved with did not have a gambling problem. An excellent book!!

A must have for all who are trying to help a loved one quit abusing their self with drugs alcohol or anything else that's causing a problem in their life or others that care about them. The Bible for Interventions.

The number of pages in this book and its size may lead readers to believe that this is a very short overview of addiction and alcoholism. Fortunately, this is not true. This book is jam-packed with details on addiction, including its definition, various manifestations, treatment, etc. Also, it is very well-written, balanced and even-handed, on this volatile, much disputed subject. For example, unlike many books by psychiatrists, it does not dismiss or assault twelve-step programs. This is important because many medical professionals feel compelled to critique 12 step programs without giving them a fair hearing.

Doctors feed their egos by maintaining that they can do a better job of treating addiction, particularly alcoholism. To be candid, doctors and others in the medical world are worried that non-professional approaches to addiction can be successful, thus dispensing with some of the services provided by these self-selected experts ( Doctors consider themselves to be an elite, without offering empirical, persuasive evidence that they know better on all things that even faintly fall within the ambit of professional medical treatment).

Moreover, this book merges psychiatric treatment of mental disorders with treatement of addiction. This seems elementary, but it is truly amazing that so many psychiatrists do not feel obligated to know how to treat both addiction and mental disorders when they coalesce in one person. Ironically, most doctors don't want to treat addiction, but, as stated above, they don't want non-professionals (AA or NA) to get any credit for their efforts (often successful) in treating alcoholics and drug addicts.

This book provides a lot of useful information for both professionals and for laymen. Highly recommended
