This book helped. I just recommended it to another friend and checked to see if it is available. I was so glad to find it here. Heal the wounds and break the cycle. It is true, there is hope.

Thank you for giving me hope.

I have owned a dozen copies of this book over the years because I keep giving it to people who are aching from growing up households (alcoholic or not) where there were serious issues that were "pretended" away, leaving deep scars.

Ms. Marlin shows us our vulnerabilities with such kindness and hope. I am forever grateful.

This book is wonderfull for newly recovering addicts and alcoholics. I've given this book to ten of my clients and it's helped support their early recovery. I think every recovery center should stock this book for their newcomers.

A must read!!!

I love how this book has everything I would want to tell someone trying to get sober all in the same book. The first thirty days can seem like an eternity so this book takes you hour by hour through your first month.

If you want to get sober and are too afraid to ask for help, this is a great starting place. It's also a great thing to have on hand if someone is in a crisis. Give them a copy of Hour to Hour for those long nights when the are alone and afraid.

I've never taken the time to write a book review, but this is a must read for anyone struggling to get sober, or anyone that works in the field of recovery.

I've worked with Jerry Dorsman closely, and I wanted to share with you my personal high regards for Jerry Dorsman and his new book "How to Quit Drugs for Good". I was fortunate enough to see Jerry apply many of the methods he details in his book with real people in real settings. Jerry is not a one-track thinker and is aware that different strokes work for different folks. The purpose of his book is to highlight the whole spectrum of treatments available for addictions so that the reader can better select a treatment more suitable to their unique needs. It is a comprehensive manual that goes into detail about all drugs, their effects, and effective treatments and therapies available. One would do very well in selecting this book to help themselves or as a manual in helping others in the field of addictions treatment. I found his first book "How to Quit Drinking Without AA" an essential tool in my own counseling experiences. It was so incredibly useful from a concrete treatment perspective that I referenced it in my own treatment plan development. I saw great results, and I stand by that. That's all I needed to see. Now I recommend all his books, because he cuts right to the chase without all the fluff. When you're in trouble, you don't want to waste time. You want to know what to do and how as soon as you can. This book is not the cure, but it's the best stepping stone to the cure only you can provide. Trust me on this!

Excellent tool

I've read this book twice now. The first time I was still using and the second when I quit. It was a very comprehensive guide and I'm so glad I bought it. Thanks so much for the help Jerry.

I bought this book years ago and enjoyed the sensible, easy-to-follow approach. I successfully quit smoking. I have since purchased it as a gift for friends several times.

It Helped A Lot.

I almost hate to review this book because it will publicly link my name with smoking. It is worth it, though, because this review may help someone else to ditch cigarettes. I thought I needed all the help I could get to stop smoking. I liked the approach this author has and I still refer to this book. It has a no nonsense approach that appealed to me and works well into the process of stopping smoking. I recommend this book to anyone who is considering breaking their smoking habit.

This book is fascinating. I was delighted that - although I am not a psychoanalyst - the book is written with such clarity that I could easily understand its complex psychological concepts.

I was attracted to the book because I am a writer and it contains a section about creativity and addiction which I found extraordinarily insightful.

This book makes excellent reading and is also a useful tool for self-examination.

Hungers and Compulsions: something to chew on!

Hungers and Compulsions, co-edited by Jean Petrucelli, Ph.D. and Catherine Stuart, Ph.D. is an ambitious, thought-provoking and perhaps even life-altering, collection of scholarly writings by various experts on "addiction" in the broadest sense of the term.

While the book is targeted primarily at professionals in the fields of psychology/psychiatry, etc., as a lay person, I find myself reading it "compulsively" (if you'll excuse the pun), since it offers fascinating insights into areas which may touch our lives or the lives of those we know -- hunger disorders, cigarette smoking, alcoholism and drug addiction, etc.

The book also explores the patient-therapist relationship, from unique vantage points: often that of the therapist and his or her own needs or the analysis of a literary character's behavior.

If you are looking for substantive summer reading, I think you'll find it dulce et utile. After reading the first few chapters, I was shocked to find myself in the exercise room for the first time in my life! Perhaps it was the image of the coughing cigarette smoker or the patient who yanked and ate her hair. Hopefully, it will inspire others towards positive change, as well.

My knowledge of the subject had been limited to a few magazine articles and my own illness until I read a few books on eating disorders. I now feel pretty much up-to-date, and this was easily the most useful book I read. While it's medically sophisticated, it is also easy to read, clear, and compassionate. And that has really helped me get going on my treatment. Thanks.

Burns and Covington's book has been very helpful in my practice. "Seasoned" clinicians as well as practitioners with less experience working with infertile clients will find the information presented valuable.

Can't refer to a specialist? Use this book!

Review Date: 1999-03-11
When managed care makes it impossible to refer a client to someone who specializes in infertility, here is the book that will make you feel confident about your work. And when you don't have time to read a whole book at once, here is the book that allows you to choose the chapters you need when you need them. The impressive array of interdisciplinary experts follow the same format in each chapter, making cross-references for the reader very easy. This book is truly comprehensive, including topics such as "Special Populations" and "Adoption after Infertility", along with the practical guidelines we all want but which are often lost amidst theory and statistics in other books. The appendices and resource section are especially impressive. There are questionnaires, guidelines, consent forms, and a record-keeping form. The resources section has over 20 pages ofdouble-column entries. The authors have organized a stunning amount of information in a way that is useful to clinicians new to infertility issues and to those with experience who want to learn more

This work was an answer to my prayer. I come from a very large family were alcohol and drug addiction is very prevalent. I had been currently struggling with how to best approach a sibling who is fighting addiction now. Mr. Shabazz has provided me with the answer.

This work is the tool that I, who have never had an addiction, will use to approach my sibling and convey to them that I see what your going through, I'm here for you... but I won't be abused by you and your not alone.

I thank you Mr. Shabazz for your work and once again this proves that NO prayer is too small that HE won't answer.

Sincerely,
Forever a Greatful reader

Terrific book on cats
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-18
A great resource on cats!

First, the book looks at cats in history. As someone who once had cats as family members, I can get excited when I read that (page 17): "The heyday of the domestic cat was certainly in ancient Egypt, where the pets were not only useful members of society, but for almost 2000 years were deified as well." This section provides a nice context of the historical view of cats.

Second, there is a nice encyclopedia of cats, starting on page 39. My friends were a tabby cat and a calico. This lengthy section puts these into a larger context--from lions and tigers to the domestic cat.

Third, for those who have cats, the section on "Cat Care" is very useful indeed. I would commonly open the book to this section when my cats had any problems. The various ailments are well described and, at least to my experience, very helpful. Over time, I experienced with one cat having diabetes (and having to inject her every day), old age (my tabby cat lasted to 19 years of age), an onset of paralysis, what may have been feline leukemia (but was probably not, since both survived nicely), and so on. The encyclopedic coverage of ailments and how to address these was invaluable.

And there are lots of nice photographs of cats!

All in all, I found this a terrific volume to help me with my cats.

The Very Best Cat Book I've Read

Judith A. Steeh wrote this very fine book way back in 1978 and if you are looking for a really excellent book on cats, their history, many breeds, health, care, and joy of their companionship, if you can find a copy, this is definitely the one to get. I really treasure my copy; she has a lot of very valuable information on cat care I have not seen in other books (for instance, what to do if they start foolisg with electric wires -- apply bitter aloe vera or alum). This is a very comprehensive work jam-packed with beautiful color photos. If you only buy one cat book ever, make this the one!
