Video Games Books

Prices of todays game offerings are pretty steep and if you have more than one child who loves to play games (adults who are kids at heart included) then you have to buy this book. If there is a more comprehensive book about Playstation games, I have yet to find it. Craig Wessel is a well known author, much respected, writer of a parents guide to game buying and this book is one of the examples of how much research he does when writing his books. Not only are you given the complete outline of the games, but also recommendations of if this game is age appropriate. His books will not only save you money, when picking a game, but also disappointment of young ones of receiving a game which is not at all what they thought it would be. Excellent book and written with consumers in mind.

...why don't they make them like this anymore? Simple, direct, and to the point. Clues and maps...not a bunch of useless junk that you'd never use in a game. I miss the late 1980's thru early 1990's era of computer games. It was a very fun time. This guide got me thru one of that era's best computer RPG's. If you can get your hands on it, it is still the best of the whole Ultima series. This book was invaluable!

I am quite happy with my issue of PC Gamer, it was in perfect condition and arrived on time!

I've written a lot of books in my day (okay, most of 'em never got published), but this is my favorite. Magee had his "surly bonds of earth," Churchill had his "blood, sweat and tears," Shakespeare had his "to be or not to be," Erasmus had his "dulce bellum inexpertis," but by God I've got my "from take-off to touchdown YOU are in control." Hey, wait a minute - I think Jayson Blair wrote that.

This arc falls perfectly between the first and second Perfect Dark books, and even though it's not written by Rucka, it very well could have been. It's so refreshing to have a character that barely gets out by the skin of her teeth and needs a little help from lady luck once in a while.

There is a lot of verbiage, but this IS a story, not just action, and the STORY is what makes this and the other books great.

The art is bright and detailed, and fits the story well. I would recommend this to fans of the video game AND action books/comics.

The previous reviewer must have been brain dead herself when she read the book. There is no other way she could have so completely misread this text. The authors are not opponents of Pokemon -- as if that was even the point. In excerpting the statements from Tobin about the "evil" empire of Pokemon, she completely misquotes him. He CLEARLY argues in his introduction that this represents one of the perspectives on Pokemon and then goes on to lay out other perspectives. In the chapter about anti-Pokemon websites, the author is describing the discourse of these websites, not advocating for them. In fact, the author describes these as "moral panics". A moral panic is a misplaced fear that sweeps a society. If this reviewer knew anything at all about the scholarship of the people represented in this book or about the language of cultural studies, she would realize that her reading of them as children's pop culture haters is absurd. I DO use chapters from this book in my children's media studies class exactly because it represents thoughtful and sophisticated scholarship. To look at the complicated ways the Pokemon as one representative of children's popular culture circulates both as part of the global economy and as part of the childhood identity economy, I recommend this book.

I never buy books due to the fact you can read most stuff on the net. This book however, is so well researched and put together that I STRONGLY recommend buying it. There is so much informations, and a truck load of pictures of all sorts of tables.

This book on pinball machines has examples from the games beginnings to the present day, focuses in particular on the years from 1958 to 1998. It showcases fifty pinball games, each with its own chapter outlining the special features. Covered in detail are cultural influences, design and artistic trends, historical connections, collectibility, values, and unique game rules. Over 800 full color photographs display whole machine shots, close-ups of backglasses and playfields, and ball's-eye-view images. This beautiful book is an essential reference for the libraries of pinball collectors.

I absolutely love the game, and as with any game I try not to ever use a guide book for as long as possible so as to uncover the plot myself, without an accidental spoiler. But, as I've wanted to completely conquer this game, in my replayings of it, I did indeed purchase the guidebook to shorten my search times on the scavenger hunt portion of the game. The game is certainly chalk full of secrets, and if for no other reason, you will definitely want to pick this brilliant all color, beautifully illustrated guidebook. Certainly, you will also have the advantage of having a good place to turn if you get stumped while in story mode. Believe me, it will happen.
