It covers linear control processes well.
Best it gives MatLab code for plotting responses and solved
problems.
It has a 6th order filter called Chebyshev digital filter
that has a very near flat top as a band pass in the Bode plot!
These methods aren't well covered in my other books
and will be of use in studying nonlinear systems as well.

a must read for all 2nd/3rd year electronic engg. students

I was hunting for a single book which covers the area of signals and systems, communication theory, design (transforms related to these topics) using MATLAB (I have a student version 5.0). Every topic is well illustrated with MATLAB programs along with the associated terms, definitions and the mathematical details along with figures for proper visualization. This book an excellent supplement to standard textbooks in these areas. The presentation is crisp and clear. I experienced the "joy of understanding" while using this text with the software. GRAB A COPY AND UNDERSTAND THE WORLD OF TRANSFORMS!

I am the author of this book and I wanted to let you know that if you wished to find out more about it before your ordered it, you can go to its home page, which can be found at http://www.designers-guide.com/Books/. It contains considerably more information about the book, including excerpts.

Amazon would not allow me to post this message to you without giving the book a star rating. So I did my best to provide an unbiased opinion ;-).

Interest to the Mining Industry
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-13
The mining industry is showing increasing interest in the use of simulation for mine design optimization, risk analysis, and estimation of recoverable reserves as a function of mining selectivity. Many symposia have been organized to discuss deposit simulation and its applications. However, as stated in the book's introduction, there was an obvious need for a book describing the mathematical and practical aspects of simulation. Journel and Kyriakidis filled this gap. As expected from Journel the book is thorough, detailed, requiring a strong statistical background to be fully appreciated, but a must-read for anyone interested in the subject. It will become a text book for all serious students of geostatistics and a fundamental reference for all geostatisticians.

Evaluation of Mining Reserves

Review Date: 2004-08-16
This is a well-outlined book explaining the simulation approach to the evaluation of mining reserves. It starts out with the statement of the problem, gives the notations used, and notes the objectives of estimation and simulation. After the simulation approach is explained, volume-variance correction alternative is discussed. There are very good application examples with the sample reference data set used. More than 200 pages of excellent reading material in the subject. Highly recommend it.

An extremely useful introductory text

To those students, mostly at the undergraduate level, that are not applied mathematic specialists and have looked for an easy to understand, well written, introduction to Neural Networks in learning processes; this is a must-have book. "Gateway..." is an excellent read, targeted to readers from a wide scope of backgrounds, from Biologists to Computer Science Majors through Medical Sciences.

Although leaning a bit too heavily on the conceptual view of the subject, the book introduces the reader gradually to what a Neural Network is, what a computer model is and how it works.

Two basic tools are of special interest to the reader. First, the beginning half of the book gives a general, yet very complete, introduction of the concepts, history and theory to be used. Second, for those with a little more interest in the mathematics there's a good number of "Math Boxes" delving into the details of the subject(s).

The effect of these tools is that, by the time you reach into the core matter of how neural networks models are constructed and worked in the field of Hippocampal memory, the reader suddenly finds his/herself well-familiarized with the theory. A comfortable, gradual, learning process has taken place without any discomfort (and in less time than you would think!).

I'm the archivist for the free Graphics Gems code base on the web. I do it for free, because this code is so valuable. Others think so, too: there is an average of 100 hits a day on the site. Go look at the online list of what's in this volume to see if it's for you.

Highlights (for me) include an IEEE fast square root, uniform random rotations, triangle-cube intersection, and BSP tree ray tracing. There's tons more.

Amazing Approach to Historical Analysis
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-23
The mathematical approach taken to resolve weapons ballistics and probability of hit/ kill for the simulation are incredible. Applying the simulation to the actual battlefield with 100,000 elevation data points adds great value to the outcome of the simulations. Aside from the analytical approach; the read was insightful and exciting. The authors establish sound results, and leave room for future work to answer commonly asked "what if" questions.

Outstanding analysis based on a thorough review of fact available.

The authors' do a magnificent job of comparing and contrasting the conflicting theories of three notable historians. This is followed by a detailed analysis of the various outcomes when each of the three theories is modeled in a comprehensive computer simulation, a non-trivial task by anyone's standard. Their analysis also documents many of the limitations inherent in attempts to translate historical events into mathematical equations. Highly recommended reading, but then again, my opinion may be slightly predjudiced.

It's a collection of fifty years of research in the area of inductive computer-aided algorithms, machine learning and advanced neural networks. The practical examples given in the book are superb. We have used the same concept in our data mining and pattern recognition works. The scripts given in the book with slight modification are very useful in building the networks. I suggest anybody in the specialization of neural networks, machine intelligence and data mining to use this abundent knowledge in their practical works.

The book "Inductive Learning Algorithms for Complex System Modeling" by Hema Madala and Alexei Ivakhnenko decsribes the learning algorithms in the first few chapters. First chapter gives historical perspective of complex nature of the subject. The next few chapters explain the importance of selection criteria and various computing algorithms.

These algorithms are similar to the artificial neural network algorithms which are being used widely in analysis, identification and predicting the fuzzy complex systems; only difference is that they are inductive in nature. They have different strategy in their forecasting approach.

The authors have dealt with the data from some real life complex systems and presented their results. They have given some comparitive results with the functioning of neural networks. Finally the actual source code has been supplied. This is still a valid code and one can convert it to utilize for modern data mining applications which come under the arena of internet CRM applications.

Though this has been first published in 1994, these algorithms are still valid for the modern usage. It would be worthy to consider for publishing a second edition by adding some latest contribution on the topic from the authors.

There is no other book available with such a valuable elaborative information on the topic.

A MUST for the serious analyst!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-14
I read this book in 1997 when a colleague of mine recommended it. I was surprised that this book was not part of the 'popular' object oriented books at the time. It explains the foundation and thinking behind what the other books address in a superficial fashion. This is not about learning how to express designs using some notation. This book is about the thinking that goes behind object oriented modeling, specifically information modeling, regardless of the notation you currently use.
If you are a serious business modeler, business or systems analyst, and you would like to distinguish yourself in your career, this book is for you.
A word of preparation: Be patient with yourself reading this book, this work is not tips-and-techniques that you can skim and add to your bag of tricks. It took me a few readings until I started 'getting' the possibilities that the content produced for me.

I was surprised to find no image of the cover of this book and no customer reviews. At the second thought, it makes sense. This book is for IT practitioners with solid theoreteical background in Computer Science. The book is not complex, but requires patience. It is about all the object-oriented theory behind the most fundamental behaviour of object instances - Create - Read - Update - Delete. All explained in terms of theory of sets using logical predicates, which is part of formal logics.

Anyway, once I bought and read this book in 1998 - 5 years ago - I was hooked on object orientation. Microsoft's ADO, J2EE's EJB's and JDO instantly and naturally made sense to me once they surfaced in IT practice as newly emerged technologies.

I have impressed and opened the eyes of many people of intelligence with my super deep understanding of these issues yet numerous hight tech red necks vere left unmoved.

If you want to feel CRUD and brearth CRUD in Obj-Orient. terms, plus to have really deep knowledge of Object-toRelational mapping, buy it and read it. Plus, buy Kilov's 'Business Specifications' book.
