Excellent practice of production understanding

Unlike many books, this book allows you to practice your knowledge of production systems. This book is a good addition to any production systems (production inventory control, production operations management) class. It provides a good, basic overview of many of the principles needed for the production control professional. The main advantage of this book is that it has a diskette with it to allow practice of the principles. A tool called ProDSS is included to aid in many of the calculations using Excel macros. These calculations include forecasting and labor requirements. There is also a simulation to evaluate your decisions against a factory environment. However, you must have the instructor text with diskette to utilize this feature.

I consider this text an excellent choice for the basics of production systems. It is also an excellent addition to any college level production systems class (although I really think another text like Factory Physics should be used also to provide more details to much of the content.)

I find this book useful for young radiotherapists who are in training, but maybe it could be better to have more images of treatment fields

Great Introduction to The Scientific Method for Mobile Robotics Enthusiasts!!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-30
At present, I have not had a chance to review this book from cover-to-cover. The material I have read is of GREAT benefit to roboticists and perhaps some scientists and engineers. This book is the result of several lectures offered at universities around the world. Clearly, careful selection and cultivation of these lectures have taken place in order to create this book! The wording is in-depth yet easy to follow; concepts are reinforced with examples of mobile robots operating in the real world. I feel much more confident about statistical tools such as the T Test and parametric ANOVA in addition to tools such as the Lyapunov Exponent used to describe the error rate of predictions. (Perhaps the wording on that last one isn't quite accurate - I'll have to go back and re-read that section:)

Some small typographic, grammatical and formatting errors are vastly overshadowed by the overal quality and completeness of the text! If you like mobile robotics and scientific approaches, this book is a definite must-read!!!

A helpful book to understand semiconductor model
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-22
Spice is a software package that become a de facto standar in circuit simulation. But as in any other circuit simulator we need to define the accurate input model to get the accurate results. And this book describe in more detail the components that is used in almost any electronic circuit, i.e. semiconductor devices. The value that is a credit point for this book is not just how detail the description of the semiconductor model is in order to get the accurate parameters but also how to use those parameters in Spice. So, for you who new to this circuit simulator there is no need to worry because this book explain how the circuit model is built using Spice. And for you who need the basic theory of semiconductor model the book gives two nice appendices on that one. One chapter that is need to be explored in more detail is about noise and distortion (hopefully in the next edition the editor could have more on that topic). Finally, this is a "must be read" book for you who want to get excellent results in modelling electronic circuit.

Interesting Ideas

Review Date: 2006-11-21
Serious games takes a look at the power of games to simulate a simplified version of reality and thus help people understand the variables, causes, and effects impacting decisions in the real world. As it was written in the late 1960s the game ideas presented are mostly untechnical and are really more like role-playing scenarios than what we might think of as games today. Nonetheless Abt does a good job of talking about both the theory of games, the practical aspects to consider in their design and some good examples of successful games. Don't expect practical advice for designing your serious video game.

Actually, it's 10 races...

Actually, there's ten races to command in 7K: AncientAdversaries, which is an update of the original game. The three extraraces also come with their own deities, like the Viking's Thor. Not that I've managed to ever call up a deity, but that's another story.

There's also an extra military unit, called the Unicorn (it's a type of siege weapon, not the mythical creature), not that I've ever managed to build one. This game is hard, it's definetly not like Warcraft :)

Actually, rather than C&C or Warcraft, this game makes me think of games like The Settlers and Bullfrog's old classic Powermonger, in that you can take over villages peacefully.

This book will help you design simulations. It doesn't take you trough the design on the simulation, but rather help you apply certain algorithms to your simulations. If you know simulations and require help in coding Mathematica, this book is for you.

Good for Completing the Professional

Review Date: 2007-09-17
Simulation engineers seem to happen...rather than according to a plan. They build a model to solve a problem of theirs one day, and pretty soon other people are bringing them their problems to build models for.

This book is good for those of us who have followed that path. It links together those pieces that seem to float free in our knowledge bases, and helps to define the overall picture of doing a simulation and the topics that need to be addressed at a fundamental level when building a complex simulation.

If you want a beginning book...this ain't it. But if you have the need...then this is a good book to start with.
