Simulation Books

This short book is very useful if you are writing a paper on the results of an agent-based model. It outlines how your paper should be set up and discusses what details to include. Although it presents an overview of what is ABM, it will not teach you how to create an agent-based model. Nonetheless the student or researcher should find this book useful.

The book covers the basics of verification and validation of CFD simulations. It is not an advanced text for scientists, but an introductory text for beginners or CFD engineers. It is divided into 5 chapters, with a solid background presentation in chapter 1, followed by a description of the terminology (chapter 2). In the rest of the book, the author divides the subject into verification (grid and time step sizes tests) and validation (comparasion with previous or experimental data), presenting good descriptions of both itens.

For those who grew up with SPICE, a good entry point into methods for analyzing 'communication' circuits..

The book is well written but not very extensive. It points to the applications right from the beggining and it is certainly of great value for students and engineers already engagged with Balanis Book on antenna theory. I strongly recommend Makarov's book for training students with a strong numerical methods background on electromagnetics, as a prerequisite before taking the course.

I had jumped in to help with a school's Mac/Appleshare/IP network and needed some immediate help and guidance beyond Apple's own documentation.

Tom Dell's book provides a good subject background for those of us just getting our feet wet and moves right on through the material with full information for even the advanced user.

Contains good examples, meaningful screen displays to take you through various setups and options. He also gives you enough information to help make decisions when there are multiple paths you may take with your Appleshare/IP setup. There are good references to additional books and materials. The CD included with the book also contains much useful information for related software, both shareware and commercial.

With using this book as a guide, I found if I still had questions, it had helped me identify where I needed to go to answer them.

This book attempts to do two things.

1. Introduce the reader to the science, techniques and applications of atomistic simulations of crystalline and molecular systems.

2. Compare and contrast the quantity and quality of atomistic simulations in different geographies (US, Japan and Europe primarily).

This work succeeds on both counts. There is enough scientific background on the simulation techniques for people in related fields (chemistry, physics, materials science) to understand.

Overall, the text is easy to read, there are many references, all data that can be put into tables/charts has been, and the math is kept to a minimum. There is good coverage of techniques, algorithms, and software codes used in simulations. This book also provides a needed history of atomistic simulations; citing related Nobel Prizes, scientific breakthroughs, major software developments, and important test cases.

This book should not be used as an introduction to doing atomistic modeling though. It is best used as a reference text by people who either do atomistic simulations for a living, or have to rely on its results.

The concept of Professor Scheer to analyse and structure the business processes in order to derive the IT structure of a company is unmatched in the industry. No other Software tool I have seen so far provides a general concept and the means to wholisticly map an organisation into an IS concept. This is really best of bread and for all IS Managers and Business Planning People a must.

Remember Conway's Game of Life? Surely you must, if you are interested in this book. The Game has been around since the 70s. The editors have cultivated recent research papers that demonstrate how far the field has advanced. Reinforced by some pretty colour plates that depict artificial entities [dare we call them living?] in some surroundings. These include the modelling of bee flights through a garden, and simulated trajectories of a group of bacteria.

Nor is the Game of Life ignored. One plate shows it in three dimensions. The Game is played in 2 dimensions, with time as the third dimension. An obvious choice that gives interesting trajectories of the cells.

The narrative adds to the illustrations. By describing a variety of computer simulations [worlds?]. Where the experimenter can tweak many parameters, and watch her world unfold. Some worlds are impressively rich in complexity of observed behaviours.

The only drawback in the book is its skimpy index. A mere two pages. It should have been more detailed.

I was introduced to this book as a college student. Since then, as a teacher, I have used it in high schools and middle schools. Although with a younger group of kids the prep time is longer the lessons are a hands on way for any age group to understand and use the American political process.

This game is based on Victory Games' award-winning Ambush game system to simulate small-unit actions in the pacific during World War II. It uses a "modified paragraph" system to control the "bad guys" on a standard hex-sheet map with cardboard counters. Each unit represents a single soldier or vehicle. The game system covers a multitude of encounters commonly faced by the island-hopping marines, and is an excellent addition to the collection of lonely gamers looking for some tense action. The modified paragraph system gives the game good replay value as well.
