An excellent Introduction!

The book provides an excellent introduction to signal integrity, high-frequency design issues (such as crosstalk, skin/proximity/edge effects, ground bounce etc.) and interconnect modeling strategies. The material is well-thought and even a reader with no background of signal integrity can understand the issues in a matter of barely two hours. I liked the fact that numerous examples and animations are provided to drive home the concepts, which makes the reading very easy and smooth. A must read book!

Makes complicated problem seem simple

In general, I do not enjoy reading textbooks, yet the Hilliers' text is exciting and could change your approach to solving problems. After reading this text, I have the confidence to dive into challenging problems. The case studies are complicated yet simple to follow. The text includes Professor Hillier's class notes, so a dedicated learner could teach him/herself. If you do any spreadsheet modeling, this is a textbook that you will want to keep within arm's reach.

Excellent book for intermediate/advanced levels

An excellent book for understanding SLAM programming and simulation concepts. In my opinion it is not a simulation statistics book. It deals with the subject only at a very minimum discussion level. In order to fully benefit from the book some familiarity with queueing theory, statitics (time based) understanding of discrete and continuous distributions and some FORTRAN programming helps. It would enhance the book if more discussion is added as to the installing and running the software. The cross-section of examples is pretty good e.g. logistics, manufacturing, traffic, pert, etc.

I greatly enjoyed the flowchart method of writing the programs and constructing a real system in the form of a diagram flow.

Great book!

A well-organized and useful lab manual
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-09
This book contains clear directions for 53 experiments. Each experiment contains a list of objectives to put the experiment in context, a small discussion of the elements or circuits used, a reference to the accompanying text and the Electronics Workbench simulation file, a list of materials, the procedure to be used, and a section of questions and problems. The book will be useful to many, even those not using the accompanying text, since the experiments are very well laid out. A strong point is that places where mistakes may commonly be made by beginners are noted, and a boxed "sidebar" is presented to alert the student. The questions and discussion at the end of each experiment are well done since they cannot be answered without a good understanding of the theory underlying the experiment. Each experiment ends with, "Discuss, in your own words, what you observed in this exercise." My only criticism is that the simulation files use the Electronics Workbench rather than PSPice; since PSPice is so much more commonly used than the EWB, using it would be a more helpful training for students who intend to work in industry, where PSpice or Spice is very common. But the lab manual, while referring to these simulations, does not make any use of them (that I noticed) in the experiments.

LabView is a comprehensive software package with an abundance of tools included and many more available as add-ons. You can use it for most any mathematical application, yet it goes beyond that...way beyond. Its programming interface allows processes to be designed and built from its library of functions. Included examples demonstrate some of its many capabilities for use in manufacturing, etc. This product is highly recommended if you are a student in an engineering program as it not only provides you with the means of designing a system, but also testing it in a software environment. If your school has the necessary hardware and drivers available you can even see your program doing real-world control. Being familiar with LabView may actually give you an edge when sending out your resume' since many industries use it. You won't be sorry for making the purchase!
