This is a wonderful book detailing the fight of the P-51 against the Luftwaffe and Japanese. Hess did an excellent job expressing the experiences of P-51 pilots while defending the USA and the rest of the free world. He gave the P-51 the recognition it surely desrves.

The life of a true hero, before, during and after the Vietnam War

Review Date: 2008-07-21
This is an incredible story about a true hero. The whole thing; growing up poor, going on to join the Army, becoming a phenomenal officer and dealing with the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that continues today.
I recently met Jim McVeay at church. Jim is the quite guy that sits in the corner, doesn't talk to a lot of people. But after reading this book, I got a small glimpse of the horrors that he has to live with every night. The nightmares started 15-20 years after the war, and haven't stopped. He wanted this story to be told so that others might understand PTSD.
The book should be a must read for any military member. Most of us will not develop PTSD, but we all need to know how to recognize the symptoms, and the events that might lead up to PTSD. I know that I am much more educated on how a true fighter could be crippled by the nightmares.
Thanks to the author for writing such a story. My eternal thanks to Jim for your service to this country and for telling this story; even 30+ years after your retirement, you are still training soldiers.

The History of an Extraordinary Regiment
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-15
July 1st is celebrated in Canada as 'Canada Day' in all the provinces of Canada except Newfoundland. In Newfoundland it is known as 'Memorial Day.'

July 1st 1916 was the first day of the Battle of the Somme. On that day 801 soldiers of the 1st Newfoundland Regiment climbed out of their trenches to attack the Germans. In the next 30 minutes the regiment was essentially wiped out. The next morning 69 men answered the roll call. Dead, 233. Wounded, 386. Missing and presumed dead, 91. Every officer was wounded or dead. (These numbers are not exact. Outher sources give slightly different figures. I don't think anyone knows.)

In terms of the overall battle 710 men lost was insignificant, there were 57,470 casualties that day. But for Newfoundland this was a significant percentage of their young men.

The Somme was not the only battle in which the regiment fought. This book covers the history of an extraordinary regiment, the only overseas regiment in the British Army to receive the title of 'Royal.'

GEN Ent's Fighting on the Brink is a "must-buy" for anyone interested in the Korean War. It is well-researched and documented with an extensive footnote section, bibliography, and index. The documentation includes both official documentation and secondary sources. It has the "big" picture of the fighting during the period. The book contains the all-important maps necessary to understand military history. It also has an impressive collection of official and private photographs. The book is "personalized" by the extensive use of personal recollections of the fighting. The book is well-written editorially by a veteran of the fighting.

In summary, the book is THE book to buy on the Pusan Perimeter.

Absolutely fascinating, very thorough discussion of the reasons why the US and Europe have such different approaches to social welfare policy. The presentation is systematic and extremely detailed, with data to support every point and reject competing hypotheses. It is compact and easy to read, though the writing style is a bit dry. I found the book very very useful, and I haven't encountered anything else that fills this intellectual niche so well.

Group-based lending that works
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.

Three microcredit programs (Grameen Bank, BRAC and RD-12) are thoroughly discussed and evaluated as instruments for poverty reduction. With loan recovery rates higher than 90% for landless borrowers, group-based lending (that is, group guarantee to repay individual loans) is the key to substantial household economic improvement - 5% of participating households lift themselves out of poverty every year. Rigorous statistical analysis gives a wealth of information on household-level and village-level results in terms of consumption, household net worth, childrens' schooling and nutrition, production and income. The effects of men's and women's credit are evaluated separately throughout the book, giving some insight on the dynamics of Bangladeshi rural society. Statistical tables and methodological discussions are collected in the Appendix, leaving a main text that can be fully enjoyed even by readers with no statistics background. At the roots of this group-based lending approach is the vision and the determination of a Bangladeshi economics professor, Muhammad Yunus, who, over more than 20 years, has initiated and continuously improved microlending to the poor through the Grameen Bank. The story of Yunus' remarkable life is told in "Banker to the Poor: Microlending and the Battle against World Poverty" by Muhammad Yunus and Alan Jolis, from his childhood in Bangladesh and his student years in the U.S. to his return to Bangladesh and the subsequent Grameen initiative. Both books are fundamental reading for those of us who keep looking for encouraging signs in poor countries' development.

An Excellent Resource

I first came across this book several years ago while searching for ways to combat the spinal and muscular deterioration I was experiencing from radiation therapy for childhood cancer in 1954. In this substantial book, Steven Schechter has provided excellent information, backed by extensive research. Fighting Radiation and Chemical Pollutants has become a trusted resource guide for me. Unlike many books on nutritional answers to physical needs, this book offers solid documentation of medical research (almost 2 dozen pages of bibliographical notes) for the foods, nutrients, herbs, and activities it recommends. It also teaches -- in a readable balance of detail and simplicity -- how radiation and chemicals affect the human body, and how to utilize recommendations. As a naturopathic doctor, Schechter offers us refreshing alternatives to drug therapies and lives of pain. Just using a portion of the nutrients (high-quality only) listed in this book - in combination with other traditional and non-traditional therapies such chiropractic, therapeutic massage, manual physical therapy and water exercise -- has made a big difference in my quality of life and kept me from the need for drugs and surgeries.

Whether the radiation or chemical exposure is environmental, industrial or medical, this book offers effective weapons for those fighting after-effects, and practical help for those looking for front-line protection against future exposure.

The last authoritative work from this author.

Review Date: 2007-05-05
The list of credits and books published by this author is impressive by any standards. To summarise his work is, therefore, difficult - but he certainly knew his subject which, very broadly was British naval history.

In this work, Warner sets out to bring us the definitive history of the three hundred years of fighting sail which spanned the period from the 15th to the 18th Centuries. In his own typical style, he commences with the day of the Carrack in which much is explained - and needed to be explained, before we are able to move on to such subjects as; The Spanish Armada, the rise of the Dutch, England, Holland & France, dynastic struggles, England Spain & France, the Seven Years War, the War of American Independence, revolutionary France, Napoleonic wars and finally Navarino and Afterwards.

With exactly the right amount of photographs and other illustrations we are treated to an historical document that is hard to equal and I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the subject. They will not be disappointed.
