I got this book because of the reviews. But after reading it
I had a few problems with the story. Things happen super fast between Michael & Libby. One minute Michael and Libby meet (hardly any conversation between the two) and the next he is in her bed in the middle of the night and she's ok with it, and so it goes with things happening between this two that hardly know anything about one anoher but act like they've know eachother for years (no explanation as how they got to that point). The dialogue between the two falls flat. I felt no connection between the two. It was almost boring.

I read the fourth book in the series first, as it was a current release and I didn't realize at the time of purchase it was a series. I was hooked and had to purchase all of the series. These books can stand alone, but it was also an excellent series that I would recommend.

A little insite in to the book would be nice. A small peice to read to get a feel for the book and so it would help in my decision on buying. But since i read a book by Janet Chapman before; I knew that this would be just as good as the other. When I read her books it is like a movie playing in my head while i read, because i can picture all of it. wonderfully inviting.

I just discovered Janet Chapman and I will now look for every one of her books. This is a great tale about living in the Maine woods (something about which I am familiar) and I loved every page. I had been seeing her books and not getting them, because I was kind of 'done' with the historical Scots, but I accidentally discovered that these books were about modern life (sorta) and that changed everything I felt about the whole series of books. Get them! They are great!

I thought this book did a terrific job of adding highlights and details to the immortals we have come to love watching and hearing about. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories by Laura Brennan, Anthony De Longis, The Postcards from Alexa (series), and Ken Gord. I did not however like a few of the stories, because they droned on, such as the staircase and death shall have no dominion. I am sure they are good stories on their own, but they did not fit in this collection of stories very well, in my opinion.

Simply a "Must Read" for all Highlander fans!

This is a wonderful book and a must read for all fans of "Highlander". The cast and crew did a marvelous job of joining forces one last time to give us several wonderful short stories. "Post Cards From Alexa" is moving and beautiful. While "Pants" is sure to give you a good laugh. I would recommend this book to any fan of the show or the movies.

A book worth reading

Very interesting book. Written not only by professional writers, but also by members of the cast and crew, it turns out to be a good source for new Highlander related stories, for the delight of those who followed the TV series -- and always wanted more.

Some of the short stories complete the ones developed on TV, filling those blanks you didn't see on the show; others, makes you feel as if you were watching a brand-new episode of Highlander. The stories varies from writer to writer, but yet you are able to enjoy all of them equally.

My favorites are "Post Cards From Alexa" (if you like Methos, you'll love it), "The Star of Athena" (Amanda in her better shape), "Pants" (very funny), "Consone's Diary" (MacLeod from Consone's point of view), "The Methos Chronicles Part I" (centuries of Methos' life are covered here) and "The Other Side of The Mirror" (Adrian Paul trapped in an alternative world).

I have partially read so many bad romance novels recently (e.g., boy meets girl & saves the day). The plot of this book was unique and kept me reading straight through. The characters were very likable (the hero was not the overbearing Alpha male so often written into a romance novel). I did not read the other books yet in the trilogy - this was my first Holling book. Not having read the other two was not a problem for me. I hope her other books are as entertaining.

Wonderful Series!

I truly enjoyed this series. There is so much depth and emotion in all three books. My Shadow Warrior concludes the story of the three sisters; Isobel, Gillian and Rose. Rose is a strong heroine, intent on saving her dying father at any cost. She seeks out the Wizard of the North, William in hopes that he will be able to save her father using his powers. After a rocky start he agrees to travel home with Rose to heal her father. The story is romantic and dark with lots of sexual chemistry. Deidra, William's daughter who is the heroine of My Immortal Protector (my favorite Holling book) is introduced in this book.

The fascination with the paranormal implies a big dose of imagination; Jen Holling is creating three heroines of different mystical powers: Isobel, Gillian and Rose MacDonell; in My Shadow Warrior, they merge the powers toward solving the mystery of the illness of Allan MacDonell, their father, and the fate of Lilian MacDonell, their mother.
Must read the entire trilogy

This is the third installment of The Brides of the Bloodstone trilogy. It's the story of Rose, youngest of the three MacDonell sisters. While they were little girls, their mother, a powerful witch, was burned at the stake. In fear for their lives, their father hid them separately. Now many years later, and on his deathbed from a mysterious illness, the MacDonell has summoned his daughters home.

Their lives are still in danger so he has arranged each of them to be married to men he can entrust with their safety. Rose, the youngest and blessed with the healing touch, is betrothed to Jamie MacPherson, a childhood friend she hasn't seen in years. Her wedding, however, has been postponed so she can devote herself to discovering the source of her father's illness.

Despite her many efforts, her father continues to deteriorate. To Rose's mind, her only hope is William MacKay, a gifted healer also known as the Wizard of the North. Since her many letters to him have gone unanswered, Rose decides to travel to his fortress to see him in person.

William is determined to shun the girl who has traveled many miles to see him, but curiosity forces him to disguise himself and seek her out. What he finds is a beautiful woman who is dedicated to helping others, even at risk to herself.

His fascination with her finally forces him to see her and eventually agree to travel to MacDonell castle to see her father. But in truth there is a sinister plot behind the MacDonell's illness and his wife's death and this mysterious enemy will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

This was such a great ending to a wonderful trilogy. The plot of the MacDonnell's illness and the mother's death at the stake is woven throughout all three books. It is finally resolved in this last tale but what an ending. Jen Holling has done a masterful job weaving several storylines together to create an enchanting tale of love, treachery, and greed.

Terry Spear's debut novel (Vintage Romance Publishing 2006), Winning the Highlander's Heart won this reader's heart from the first page.

Spear deftly weaves in details of history and culture of 12th century England and Scotland while at the same time creating characters with whom modern readers can readily identify, particularly the comely Scottish Lady Anice.

The story is set during the reign of England's Henry I, known to have had numerous mistresses and illegitimate children while married to his wife Matilda. In the opening scene, Lady Anice--to escape the sexual overtures of King Henry, who's married to her cousin Matilda--slides down a rope from a second story window and unwittingly lands in the arms of Laird Malcolm McNeill.

Spirited, Scottish Lady Anice thinks for herself, wields a mean bow and arrow, and lets no man best her in battle or in bed, despite her innocence when it comes to the latter. In fact, she's so feisty and intriguing that Malcolm soon has second thoughts about taking an English bride. Expect Anice's and Malcolm's romantic encounters to be realistic while at the same time tastefully sensual.

If you like witty dialogue, intriguing cliffhangers, and danger around every curve, Winning the Highlander's Heart is sure to please.

If you like historicals, this is your book!

Winning The Highlander's Heart is a delight to read. An engaging romance, a suspenseful mystery, a wonderful hero and heroine, and an exciting and dangerous "road trip," all in one. In addition to all that, it's an intelligent story, with characters who actually think and act as adults. And the reader is firmly ensconced in an accurate historical time and place that adds richly to the story. I strongly recommend this book to those looking for a good read.

Terry Spear's Winning the Highlander's Heart is an entertaining tale of Countess Anice, a spirited Scottish lass, and Highlander Laird Malcolm MacNeill, a man determined to get an English bride and solicit favor with King Henry I. The King's ward, Anice is desperate to avoid his amorous advances and return to her home in Scotland. As Malcolm escorts Anice home to discover who is killing off her staff, the mystery and intrigue unfolds, and the two can no longer deny their love. But King Henry and the Norman baron he insists she wed, stands between them and the happiness they might otherwise find.

WINNING THE HIGHLANDER is a delightful story right from the very first page.

Countess Anice would like nothing more than to return to her home in the Highlands and find a Laird to marry. As a ward of King Henry I, she's expected to remain with the court until he chooses a husband for her. Unfortunately, King Henry intends to wed her to a Norman lord. There seems to be no escaping Henry's inappropriate propositions for Anice until she literally drops into the lap of the Lord McNeill.

Lord McNeill is a titled lord without property. Marrying a Scottish lass would be impossible due to a past scandal caused by his father. Malcolm is seeking an audience with King Henry in hope of acquiring a propertied English bride. Malcolm never imagined he'd find the perfect Scottish lass to wed by visiting the English court or the danger that would come from loving Anice.

Anice is forced to flee yet another of the king's attempted seductions. This time she avoids his advances by climbing out the second story window and lowering herself with ropes to the ground below. Of course, her flight did not go unnoticed by the people already gathered in the bailey. One supposed gentleman in particular even thought to help by manhandling her when she refused to jump and let him catch her. Anice recognizes his Scottish burr and can't help wishing that he would take her back to her beloved home in the Highlands. Once she leaves the Scotsman who'd helped break her fall, Anice finds her cousin and King Henry's wife, Matilda, and begs her to convince His Grace to allow Anice to return home. However, Anice never tells Matilda of the king's advances, choosing instead to blame homesickness for her need to leave the court. While conferring with Matilda, Anice inquires about the Scotsman, only to learn that he's looking for an English wife. Lord McNeill's plans are put on hold as the king gives him the position as steward of Anice's holding. Unbeknownst to Anice, various members of her staff have gone missing and foul play is suspected. Malcolm may be her new steward but there's no way Anice is going to allow him to leave for her home without her. After spending time with the determined Anice, Malcolm may just discover everything he could possibly want in the arms of a Scottish lass.

WINNING THE HIGHLANDER is a delightful story right from the very first page. I was easily able to envision Anice in all her stubborn glory as she avoids the king's advances, refuses to allow Malcolm to dictate what she should do, and insists on returning to Scotland in order to help determine what foul play has befallen her people. You can't help but adore Malcolm. He's an honorable man, trying to do the right thing by traveling to England and seeking out an English bride but becomes attracted to Anice even before the king entrusts her estate to him. This story is fast paced, full of witty dialogue, and interesting characters that will keep readers entertained for hours. If you like historical stories about those braw Highlander men, you'll love this book.

"The Bride" is, in my opinion, one of the best examples of historical romance ever. Julie Garwood takes us back in time to the Highlands of Scotland where we see the sparks fly between Jamie ("a man's name") and Alec. Their raw chemistry is almost tangible in this thrilling tale. The plot itself is masterfully crafted as we see Alec choose Jamie from among her sisters to be the one he would marry in compliance with the King's order. Jamie, stunned by this sudden turn of events, follows her mysterious husband to unfamiliar Scotland where her loyalty and kindness slowly win the hearts of her husband, his servants, his vassals and even his king.

Julie Garwood's character development in this book is extraordinary. The dialog between Jamie and Alec is thoroughly entertaining; it's so easy to get lost in their story.

If you love historical romance, this book is a MUST HAVE for your collection.

ENJOY!

I've read a lot of MacDonald books; I love the spiritual aspects that come into the story and plot. This book, coupled with The Gentlewoman's Choice (as mine was), are two of my favorite MacDonald books. The spiritual journeys that the protagonists travel are personally applicable; the questions raised should be asked of the reader, as well. And the simple (clean!) "romantic" novel side of the story is pulling, as well.

I love MacDonald, and haven't read a book of his I didn't like; but this is one of my favorites.

MacDonald was C.S. Lewis' favourite author and for good reason. Few men ever wrote with the passion and insight of MacDonald.

This book is enjoyable and intellectually challenging. It would make a great gift for university lecturers as it challenges many of today's views about land rights, culture and religion.

I cannot praise this book too much. If I had the money I'd by a million of them and give one to every influental person in the western world.

Michele Sinclair makes characters come alive. I am one of the lucky people who got to read and review an advanced reader copy. From the opening sentence you are 'into' the story. Sinclair makes you SEE the characters, the scene, the country-side. If you have followed Michele Sinclair's planned books in this series and been to her web site, you'd know that her working title was 'A Highlander's Pride'. In reading this story, you'll see why that was her working title because 'pride' is another character in the story. Another winner from this new author. Now that I've read this one, I can't wait for #3 to come out!

I do not usually give 5 stars, but this book was by far the best summer read yet. You will fall in love with Colin and Makenna. There is such a romance that builds with them that leaves you feeling good inside. This author really made the pages come a live so that you could not help but laugh or cry with the characters. The research on the history was well done and I loved the mention and background on William Wallace. The first book in this series "The Highlander's Bride", with Colin's brother Conor, was lacking somewhat but was still a good read. This sequel makes any mistakes in the first worth while. I hope there will be more stories to come of the rest of the McTiernay clan and hope I can wait patiently for them.

Review Date: 2008-07-01
Michele Sinclair fascinated and entertained Scottish Historical Romance fans with her debut, "The Highlander's Bride." In this sequel, the story of the McTiernay family continues with the youngest and first to marry McTiernay brother, Colin McTiernay, a highlander who married into a lowlander clan for political alliance and was briefly mentioned in the first book. Colin finds himself once again single, widowed, and being pushed by his father-in-law to marry his wife's sister, Makenna Dunstan, in order to keep the Dunstan clan strong and defended.

The strong and handsome leader still has not been accepted by the Dunstan clan, despite his previous marriage to Makenna's sister Deidre. Besides his problems with the Dunstan people's mistrust and the surrounding laird's greed in wanting Dunstan, he cannot believe he is being forced into marriage with Makenna, who he constantly was at odds with during his marriage, and feels another marriage is not required to be a strong laird. Deidre was blonde, blue-eyed, and meek; a woman trained to run a large keep and be an important laird's wife, but she was also very fragile. Colin loved Deidre in his own way, but his heart was not really engaged. Thus, it was a comfortable marriage. Now he is being offered a red-haired, green-eyed, tomboy, termagant, to deal with and marry, who is willful, can wield a sword as well as, or better than, many of the Dunstan men, and worst of all, has no idea how to do woman's work.

Makenna has many of the same feelings as Colin. She is afraid of him and her own feelings and lack of confidence to step into Deidre's place. She has seen Colin as the huge bellowing man that has done nothing but make her life miserable by not allowing her to sword practice and instead forced her to train at ladies work, where she was a complete failure and ridiculed by many of her people. From the time of the marriage and through the trials of running the Dunstan clan, Colin begins to see the colorful beauty and strength of Makenna and falls deeply in love with her, while at the same time, Makenna sees Colin as the strong leader needed for the clan, as well as one to awaken her womanly passions in bed. Can Colin convince Makenna that she is truly his first true love and save Dunstan at the same time?

This is a well-written, interesting, and entertaining story that is packed with suspense. Adding to the suspense and mystery is that there are many enemies within, trying to sabotage the keep and Makenna and Colin's budding desire, passion and love. As Colin struggles with his leadership and feelings of a true marriage of passion and love, Makenna struggles as well with her growing womanhood and homemaking skills. They soon grow to realize that Makenna's father made the true match the second time around and that Colin and Makenna are perfect for each other, not only in bed, but in keeping the Dunstan clan strong, united, and protected from dangers within and without.

As there are many McTiernay brothers, Scottish romance readers have more fun to look forward to in the future as the series continues. Michele Sinclair has a talent to keep the reader engaged with interesting storylines and unforgettable characters. A real Highland and Lowland treat!

This is an excellent source on two of the most illustrious units in the British army from the beginning of the 19th Century to the end of the 20th. Each of these units, raised from the Highlanders after the chaos and tragedy of the end of the Jacobite era, had an impressive history on its own, but it 1881 they were forged into one; their subsequent story is nothing shy of heroic; they served distinguishedly both in the Napoleonic Wars and the World Wars.

The color plates are up to the usual Osprey standards, and illustrate with great detail the uniforms of the Highlanders. As the text reveals, the regiments had to fight time and again for their right to wear their traditional costumes as a symbol of their Scottish identity.

Overall, this is an excellently illustrated and engrossing account of the most famous post-Jacobite Scottish warriors in history.

I can highly recommend this one the text and illustrations are just 1st rate. It is well worth the money.

This account of the Highlanders and particularly of my ancestor, Alexander McAllister, and the role he played was most informative. I was not familiar with the details of their mid 18th century migration to America. For other researchers, information can also be gained by accessing the web page for Clan McAlister of America. Of course, the name has been spelled different ways, but this is the same Clan. Thanks so much, Duane Meyer, for your research!

This book has excellent information on where my line came from in the Highlands. The description of the economy, the living conditions, the government and clan disharmony, as well as the religion question, all provide a good picture of where our Scots came from and the conditions of their lives. My McRae family came to Carolina in 1774, so this timeline used in this book covered the years preceding, as well as a few following their immigration. I was very interested in the motives for migration. This provided many more than I had previously read about. Because the years led directly into our revolution, it is especially relevant to read this information on the Scots question whether to serve as loyalist or as revolutionary. This proved, as well as disproved several theories which are in print. I appreciate having this book in my reference library. It has more specific descriptive information about the Scots' living conditions both in Scotland and in North Carolina than any other source I have consulted.
