This set is an incredible find for anyone looking for information on Tigran Petrosian. I snapped up a set here on amazon and the money was well spent. It's too bad that Pergamon Chess doesn't reprint this series, because anybody studying chess needs to study Petrosian's games, sooner or later. Both volumes combined have over 2100 games.

Don't be put off by the price. This volume contains a surprising number of great tricks, and clearly explains a good number of the basic techniques. It is written for the beginner, but it is fairly comprehensive, and the intermediate card magician will find much here as well. Come on, even if I'm wrong, look how much money you're out.

Great book for beginners and advanced

Unlike those little lawn gnomes that always end up in the wrong spot... Gnomes: Masters of Illusion, the second product in the City Guide Cultures series is yours to take home now!

Unlike the stature of the race in question, this is not a small product. Following in our line started with Moon Elves, this product provides 3 cultures to explore the Gnomes, with wonderous bits of magic and mundane details.

Imperial Gnomes - Korean/Chinese flavored gnomes. (No soy sauce jokes here). Fit for intergration in any Asian campaign, or dropped fully into your normal campaign world.
Mountain Gnomes - tinkering gnomes (although not to the point of some well known tinkers.)
Hill Gnomes - these gnomes are more in line with the classic gaming image of illusionist/prankster gnomes.

Numerous Subrace combinations, and rules to design your own;Dozens of Illusion (Glamer) spells;Magical Pipes;Hordes of new mundane equipment, including many alchemical creations;8 Prestige Classes;Over 50 spells;diseases;A full pantheon of sample gnome deities to use, abuse, or disapprove.
No pointy red hats here!

Jude Goodwin's 'Table Talk' bridge cartoons have appeared for more than 30 years in the American Contract Bridge League's Bulletin - so if you recognize them and are an avid player, you'll love having them all under one cover at last. Humor is dependent on an understanding of bridge basics and such an audience will relish the zany moments and fun commentary imbedded in these cartoons.

The GoW guides are some of the best out there because the include every tiny bit on what you have to do in the game. I also liked that the Bestilery has improved and is a lot more clear. The only problem I have with this is that it doesnt show you the bonus costumes that you unlock as Kratos. So overall this is a very good guide and it comes in handy a lot.

This guide is well laid out. The bestiary, photos, and campaign walkthrough are top notch. I really liked the sections that explained the Greek myths, which provided extra background info about the characters in the game. It was definitely an abbreviated history lesson. The guide also contains lots of concept art in the back. You also get a nice rundown of all the hitpoints for all the enemies. All the combos are explained. If you are a fan of the series, you can't go wrong with this little guide.

Excellent contemporary overview of a popular defense to 1.e4
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-16
GM Wells has written well regarded opening books before (Kasparov remarked positively on Wells' Semi-Slav book). In this work, he explains the current state of theory in every significant variation of the Caro-Kann.

Wells mentions that in his youth, he employed the C-K, and throughout the book enjoys pointing out lines where Black is doing well. But this book is certainly not a repertoire for the Black player, nor a one-sided treatise on winning with the C-K. It is an honest and mostly objective look at how GMs today view the main lines of the Caro.

I found the chapters on the Panov Attack and the Advance variation most interesting. Chapters on 4...Nd7, 4...Bf5 and 4...Nf6 as well as sections on the 2 Pawns Attack and various White tries like the KIA and 2 Knights variation all help anyone interested in the C-K from either side to gain insight.

Highly recommended!

The best Caro-Kann book

Peter Wells as a well-deserved reputation as a top-class writer.
He gives explanations of the main ideas for BOTH sides of this classic defense. He does present the lastest theory but this is not a theoretical tome on the opening, but more like a textbook. If you play 1.e4, you need this book. If you play 1...c6, you probably already own it.

I remember Jeremy Silman (another famous chess author) complaining for years that he loved the Caro-Kann but there were simply no good books on it. But now he said that after the two Karpov books, the Houska book (which is a repertoire for Black), and this book from Wells that he cannot complain anymore. We've finally gotten quality coverage of this opening. In fact, this book convinced me to play the Caro-Kann as Black since it seems so logical and so simple.

These book is not a repertoire and is not exhaustive from a theory standpoint. But it is phenomenally well-written and one of only a few opening books I've ever read cover-to-cover. Now someone needs to convince Wells to write a book on the Tartakower QGD.

In the tradition of "Think Like a Grandmaster"
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-21
My banner makes an attractive headline; but I would humbly opine that this book is sort of like Kotov's classic "Think like a GM" and Pal Benko's "Winning Chess Psychology" combined. I was at the prestigious HB Tournament as a spectator; and there was the widest array of chess books I had ever seen were on sale. Opening books, ones on tactics, games collections, etc. but I wanted something a bit different and this was one of about 6 books I purchased and I have not been dissapointed.

There are two parts of the book, the first part has 12 chapters; the "interviews" with 12 different chessplayers and this keeps up one's interest. Though grandmasters and masters are interviewed in the various chapters and give their input on chess and the thinking process, my favourite chapter is 9 on Ofer Comay, who is largely a chess problem solver, having won tournaments for solving such puzzles. It is interesting to hear what he has to say and some puzzles are provided. This is one of the strongpoints of this book in that like the Pal Benko book there is an element of "human interest." Much of the book can be set aside for bedside reading or maybe when one takes the bus, a workbreak and such.

Part two of the book entails discussions, chapters 13-21. Classic games are discussed and another strongpoint of this book, sometimes not-so-classic games, but they make points by the author and interviewees so suffice well. In fact, I like some of the examples provided not involving Grandmasters because it is probably closer to my skill levels. That brings me to the point that some parts would seem to be for more advanced players but others would benefit as well.

Another plus of the book is Avni's uses of boxed quotes to highlight important concepts and other uses of summing up key points of information.

Of course, for my humble opinions, I am only a player between 1600-1700. I've sought to give this work an honest appraisal. I noted two reviewers here, the author and another urging reading a review of this book. I purchased it and read it and will return to it time and again for the interviews and discussions on the thought processes involved in playing chess.

Since I'm the author, I do not pretend to be objective. So, here is what others have said about the book:
"Original and extremely interesting... often very entertaining... it is a lot of fun, but it's also an important and most welcome addition to chess literature" - IM Jeremy Silman.
"The players and topics covered are generally fascinating... there are also practical tips and useful discussions of chess concepts that should prove valuable for many players" - NM Randy Bauer.
"Avni presents an enlightening and very enjoyable look at how top players think... (it) is a delight" - Chessville.com.
"Fascinating new book" - GM Lubomir Kavalek.
"The wealth of examples would be very instructive even for those who feel at distance from the psychological issues" - IM Israel Shrentzel.
"Avni is a relaxed and informal interviewer and gets some straight answers from his subjects... it is a stimulating and readable book" - British Chess Magazine.

I've recently started balloon twisting, and have purchased/viewed a number of books on the topic. Before I found this book, I thought Captain Visual's book was the best, but was very expensive as it is out of print. Captain Visual's book has more sophisticated projects, but especially for a beginner, this one is AWESOME! Many of the other books I've seen have drawings, or black and white pictures. This book has step-by-step instruction with full color pictures for each step. It also had some ideas that weren't in the other books I'd seen. I just received this one today, and I'd highly recommend it! I also like the spiral binding, as you don't have to try to hold it open when you're twisting balloons.

I wouldn't go twisting without it!

This is one of the best beginners books we know of for people interested in learning to twist balloons. It begins with very basic techniques, then advances to balloon sculptures which are certain to impress nearly everyone. It is also very helpful for showing people who are uncertain what sculpture they want. The wire binding allows it to lay open fully while both hands are being used for twisting.
