this is an excellent tangram book. it has 500 puzzles ranging from easy to difficult with solutions in the back of the book. it's magnetic cover and peices allows you to do this anywhere and not worry about losing peices. it's great for airplanes and car trips.

I got this book for an 8 year old boy for christmas, remembering doing tangrams when I was a kid. My friends found it, opened it, and spent then next week or so trying as many of the puzzles as humanly possible, having loads of fun taking turns with it. This book is great for all ages, anywhere, from in the car (with those ingenious magnetic pieces and board!) to home or school, or work to occupy anyone for a time. I took the opened book to the boy when I babysat him next (i decided to keep it and get him another of these books) and he loved it! we spent almost the whole time doing these puzzles. They vary in difficulty, but the solutions are in the back if you do occasionally get stumped. I recommend this book highly for anyone who likes math, puzzles, the crosswords, etc. or just some fun. =) The best thing about this book is that it works for a versatile audience, but that it is self contained with its trifold layout and magnetic tangram pieces and board. Perfect gift that's not really a book or a toy, but both - and educational too!

The Corebook for the "Angel" Role-Playing Game
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-24
It might take you a while to notice that this is the "Corebook" for the "Angel" roleplaying game, because fans of the series will be taken by some of the gorgeous graphics on the opening pages and the opening chapter, which translates "Angel's Path" from the television series to the game. While what gamers find here will be compatible with the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" roleplaying game, it is clear that "Angel" has a different flavor. The evil of Los Angeles is decidedly different from what you find in Sunnydale with the Hellmouth. The basic game playing structure is the same, but the characters lean more towards humans and demons than vampires, and understandably so for anyone who watches the show.

Chapter Two is devoted to the Chosen Champions, which lays out a list of archetypes (e.g., Psychic Supermodel, Rogue Demon Hunter), along with the Original Cast: Angel, Cordelia, Wesley, Gunn, Fred, Lorne, Doyle, Kate Lockley, Connor, and the Groosalugg. A section of Seasonal Adjustments covers the first three seasons of the series. Chapter Three, Helping the Helpless covers the game mechanics on how to roll, move, research, and fight. Chapter Four, Arcane Approaches, is all about the magical arts, teaching you how to both cast and create spells. Chapter Five, Cabals, Covens, and Agencies covers the organizations that you will encounter in L.A. Chapter Six, City of Angel lays out the haunts, sights, and suspects of the city as well (including minor allies like Anne Steel and David Nabbit). Chapter Seven, Something Wicked, presents the bad guys, organized by vamps, demons, and others (this is where you find Darla and Drusilla). Chapter Eight, Episodes, Season and Drama are guidelines for Directors on how to create storylines and run games. Chapter Nine, Blood Brothers, is a fleshed-out adventure for the "Angel Roleplaying Game," which does not involve any creating.

The back of the book contains an Appendix that provides a guide to Angelspeak, conversion notes for other Unisystem games, a glossary, character sheets, and other game aids. By this point C. J. Carella has made it very clear that he takes both this game and the television series on which it is based as seriously as the fans, which is exactly what we want. When Carella describes Darla's character motivation as "Pure self-centered evil, return Angelus, be a good mommy (very briefly)" and Drusilla's as "Whimsical nutjob, re-unite the "family," you know he is on target. I have been picking up these Eden Studio volumes because of my devotion to these shows, but I can see where playing one of these games would be a lot of fun as well.

My wife and I spent the past couple months watching the first three seasons of Angel on DVD. After we got Season Three finished, I wanted more Angel stuff, so I decided to get the RPG as I like RPGs. The corebook is very good, though only covers up to season three. Hopefully they will soon do a supplemental for it, but it isn't listed on the angel rpg web site yet.

My wife is interested in playing it with me and she is not a RPG fan, but the unisystem that the game uses is very strait forward. The book is well laid out and easy to follow.

I love the Angel quotes that fill almost every page. If you are Weldon fan, or just enjoy Angel and like to game or would like a different take on the Angelverse then this is the book for you.

We checked this out from the library. Of course the music button no longer works, but my 3 yr old feels that he is "reading" it all by himself because he can tell from the pictures what "the little one" is doing and fill that in himself as he sings it. It is adorable and I was hoping to find us a permanent copy! (sigh)

People pick up this book and begin to sing along, no matter what their age. The book has illustrations that are colorful and fanciful -- ants roller skating and at school, ants dressed up and riding on insects. It has one of those electronic buttons to push, it is one of those books that the kids love to keep around them. Great for children to read along and sing along with their parents or for a child to enjoy by themselves, with the music as accompaniment. I have given many copies as gifts.

This is going to be the coolest April Fools day ever! Michelle has a practical joke kit filled with awesome stuff--fake bugs, disappearing ink, pepper gum, and more. And she's going to use it all. Most of Michelle's friends think her jokes are funny. But there's on person who has a plan to get even with Michelle. And if Michelle doesn't find out who it is--she's going to be in so much trouble it isn't even funny.

We took this to a function where we knew no-one, popped the cards on the table and within minutes we went from having no conversation to people talking laughing and having a fantasic time.
My kids even play at home when we have guests, they now know more about us, our childhood, likes and dislikes ect than we ever knew about our own parents. Well worth buying and makes the perfect gift for someone who is hard to buy for

The Best Conversations we have ever had!

Review Date: 2006-12-29
This game seemed at first like a no-brainer. However!! when you actually play it, the conversations that develop are amazing! We have played with people we have known for years, and also with people we have just met and each time it gets so interesting, without being contrived or set up. There are a variety of ways to play and we have varied them a little. Great fun,the only game you need in your cupboard for dinner parties, ice breaking, holidays and also those times when you are socialising with people who perhaps you wouldn't neccessarily choose to socialise with. It also gave us the best conversations we have had with our children EVER!
I am going to try it with our training groups at works in the New Year.

A document after a conspiracy theorist's heart
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-03
As is typical of the best of the Shadowrun sourcebooks, this volume is organized as an electronic document from the fictional Shadowrun world, posted at Shadowland by Captain Chaos, sysadmin extraordinare some time in 2056 (after THE UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD introduced insect spirits but before PORTFOLIO OF A DRAGON and the short-lived political career of Dunkelzahn).

In the Shadowrun universe, the former country of Mexico became the nation of Aztlan, which in turn is effectively a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aztechnology, one of the 10 most powerful corporations in the Shadowrun world, in which such megacorporations are effectively nations in their own right, answering only to their peers on the Corporate Court - or to whatever damage can be inflicted on them by shadowrunners, of course.

In this case, even Captain Chaos is nervous about handling the core information, a large package from Espectro, a single "secret benefactor" suspected of deep connections with Aztechnology/Aztlan intelligence. Aztechnology as a whole is among the most ominous of the Big 10, because of its involvement with insect spirits, toxic shamans, and just generally evil magic and Things Of Which It Is Not Good To Think.

The subsequent Shadowland chat goes a level beyond the usual Shadowrun sourcebook format. The core information is presented in the form of articles marked up with commentary by runners visiting Shadowland, adding information or attempting to debunk it (and each other's claims) on a case by case basis. But in addition to the runners' commentary, an additional level of commentary is present as a chat between several even more shadowy presences, some of whom are identified ("the Big 'D' being Dunkelzahn, for instance) while even the species of others remains in question, though hints are dropped. (*Their* chat was seized and posted to Shadowland by an unidentified entity spying on *them*.)

The book opens with a marked-up news report of the civil war currently raging on the Yucatan peninsula, which in passing provides information about Aztechnology's ownership/censorship of various communications media and of the nature of their military, as well as a sort of current events summary. Next, Espectro provides a history/overview in traditional Shadowrun style, the next best thing to Danchekker: straight from the Aztlan educational system, with appropriate sardonic shadowrunner commentary added - and with severe cuts by Captain Chaos for brevity's sake where the revisionist history gets to be too much.

The subsequent sections on Aztechnology proper - history, formal distinction from the Aztlan government, corporate structure, and business practices - include some "liberated" files from Aztechnology's arch-enemy, Ares, and by Knight Errant (specifically evaluating Aztechnology's security).

As for subsequent sections, "Religion and Magic" covers blood magic in passing; briefly, Aztlan has a state religion based on the ancient Aztec myths, and Roman Catholicism has been suppressed (and hence the underground faith serves as a nugget around which resistance to the Aztlan establishment tends to gather). "Getting In" discusses entering Aztlan itself rather than Aztechnology facilities in general. (As a UCAS intelligence document subsequently stolen by Aztechnology, then stolen again and posted on Shadowland, this is the next best thing to public information, so gamemasters have considerable latitude with how Aztechnology counters such known threats.) "Living in Aztlan" talks about what the place is like once you're in. "Tenochtitlan" (formerly known as Mexico City) gets its own section, with some emphasis on government and mass transit.

I picked up this book in the Las Vegas airport at the end of my first trip to Las Vegas. I wish I had got it at the beginning of the trip. This is a thin little book that teaches basic strategy and can easily be read in one sitting before arriving in Vegas. Once you have mastered basic strategy, you can move on to some other more advanced books such as Blackjack Bluebook.

A quick easy read. NO CARD COUNTING. Simple tips and strategies make the game fun for the amature, and almost completely remove the house advantage in Blackjack. You gain confidence and can relax and enjoy the game because you know you are doing it right. Using the easy techniques taught in this book, you can even the odds. Don't lose another winning hand because you are too lazy to read a few pages. A must-read for anyone who intends to visit a blackjack game, especially first-timers.
