Pierre Chareau is a Treasure

Pierre Chareau is a book that is well worth the price, if only for its extensive and beautiful coverage of the deservedly famous Maison de Verre (House of Glass), which the designer created in 1932 in Paris. The design was something of a departure for Chareau, who had been primarily a designer of imaginative Art Deco furniture and interior fixtures. The Maison de Verre was an extensive remodel of an existing house in Paris in a High Modernist style, with clearly expressed structural members (steel columns and beams) carefully differentiated from partitions and non-load-bearing members. It has extensive glass block walls which create a wonderful glow of light throughout the structure. It also has an open plan which recalls the flowing, plastic use of space preferred by most of the best modernists of the Bauhaus and championed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The book also shows the wide variety of Art Deco furniture designs produced by Chareau, as well as buildings and interiors which he either designed or collaborated upon with architects. The excellent photographs and high quality of the printed reproductions make this one of the best books on modernist or Deco designers I have ever seen.

This was our first book by Mike Venezia and we're now hooked. My kids loved this book, both the paintings and the silly cartoons. We read it a few times and discussed the paintings and within a week or two they had them memorized. I appreciated the balance of actual art with the details of Bruegel's life. I thought it covered this artist beautifully for this level (first grade).

The pictures in the paperback weren't as glossy as the hardcover library edition and it detracted a bit from the overall enjoyment, but not enough to keep me from purchasing the rest of the series.

Well organized text

This book is a well written and a well thought approach for the basic users of Pro/E or for those who have just started working with Pro/E. The chapters in the book are well organized and allow the reader to gradually get the knowledge required to work with solid modeling. The depth of explanation of options and tools available in Pro/E is good and the writing style is easy to understand. Author has made good use of screen captures and figures throughout the book. The captures of the sketches may not be that clear, but surely convey the message that they intend to.

Sham has made a good practice to use real-world components in his books, which is a wonderful approach from reader's point of view. Some exercises on a bit more difficult side may be useful to the readers, as they will really test the knowledge of the user. In addition, some complicated and large assemblies may also be helpful for the users. In all, a great effort in making a complex solid modeling tool easy for readers and surely a good buy by all means.

This is a good book with many illustrations and examples of design. It explores what makes us like a particular product. It is very easy to read and to understand. It is concise and has large print and dozens of illustrations (more than half the pages of the book seem to have illustrations) that make the book fun and accessible.

Production for the Graphic Designer promises to provide the reader with everything he/she needs to know in order to produce books and other graphic works. And this book fulfills its promise! In a thorough and lucid manner, this books describes, step-by-step all aspects of graphic production. My illustration instructor told me that this book is "selling like hot-cakes", and now I know why. I see this book as the final step in acquiring all the knowledge I need to produce my own books.
