Maya Lin, Amazing Architect and Artist

Maya Lin by Mary Malone is about twenty-one year old Maya deciding her future career. Maya Lin was a developing architect who didn't favor war but she is significant because she designed the Veteran's Memorial, the Civil Rights memorial, and the Peace Chapel.

Maya Lin was organized into sequential chapters with a Chronology at the end. Her most well-known achievement still lingers in mind because it was detailed and descriptive. Quotes, chapter notes, index, and a `Further Reading' section were also inserted. The book doesn't have a glossary and that's the weakness. Some words were complicated which made them difficult to comprehend. People who like art/sculpting will desire reading this book because Maya Lin was an architect. I thought that this book was awesome!

An excellent overview over the Messerschmitt projects.

The book gives a very thorough overview of the designs created by Willy Messerschmitt before and during the war. The growing company headed by the designer is very good described. Perhaps is the period prior to the war described in more detail than during the war, despite the fact that the company grew dramatically during the war. Great care is given to documetation, and the reader can be assured that the facts are correct. The book describes both the successful and not successful projects, and guides the reader through the reasons why some projects were not continued. Political and business considerations between Messerschmitt and the Nazi leaders are also described very good.

I miss more detail describing the last two years of the war, this period is only dedicated a few percentages of the volume of the book. The post-war years are completely lacking, which is also a shame.

However, I strongly recommend this book, which can be read as a novel, describing in a thru! stworthy and exiting way the projects and company of the genius aircraft designer.

What a great idea! Children's literature with some real art history! Art was a boring nuisance when I was a kid, but this book and others like it make art history come alive in a way I never experienced.

Boffo Fashion for the Future

This is an amazing book because, rather than offering pics we've all seen before, this book is fraught with new photographs taken expressly for it; and this is because the book shows fashion that is never-before-seen too.

There are lots of books out now (and tv programs too) about fashion for the future, but if you want to see what the really top designers are planning (and clothes that are wearable, not weird), this is the best collection I've seen so far.

Bogle's timeless work puts historical context of what might classically be called Modern Art but will withstand decades of appreciation.

I first read this book 20 years ago when I received it from my father who was a personal friend of Mr. LeTourneau. My original book is autographed. I bought these books to give my friends because of it's positive impact on my life. Great book and great man of God.

Learning about this man (and there are very few resources) is very very inspirational, both for overcoming odds and tithing more. He and J.C. Penny, I believe I heard, eventually tithed 90% of their income.

Blessings to Amazon!

Hustvedt Gives the Paintings Back to Us
Helpful Votes: 37 out of 37 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-17
Siri Hustvedt is a fine writer and an even finer essayist. She is able to communicate volumes of historical and observational information while reassuring the reader that what she is sharing is not THE way of approaching her subject, but rather merely HER musings about art and the concept of the meaning of art. It is a relaxing manner of writing, allowing the reader to learn from her inquiries and research, yet encouraging the reader to personally move in front of a painting and pause long enough to experience that frozen moment in time surrounded safely by a 'Rectangle' of frame, and discover the personal mysteries that travel from the eye to the mind and heart.

After a typically personal declaration of an introduction that boldly suggests that each of us is as fair a judge of art as she or as art historians, Hustvedt sets out to explore different artists and share her own confrontations with their art, and in doing so she describes in the most sincere manner a means of art appreciation for the beginner to the devotee. Beginning with a student exposure to a small painting, 'The Tempest' by Giorgione, Hustvedt writes about how memory plays a role in the way we respond to art. From there she examines her own reaction to Vermeer's 'Woman with a Pearl Necklace', a painting that for years has befuddled art historians. But in this encounter with the Vermeer, Hustvedt finds a recreation of the Annunciation and compares Vermeer's mysterious painting about the concept of light from some special place announcing the otherworldly pregnancy of a young girl. It is stunning writing.

Goya has long drawn Hustvedt's attention, especially to the late work 'Los Caprichos' which she examines in detail, sharing her own interpretation about the influence of Goya's health: Goya probably suffered from Meniere's disease - inner ear dysfunction causing tinnitus, dizziness, vomiting, vertigo, abnormal eye movements, and deafness. But she does not assign the total impact of 'Los Caprichos' to that sickness. Instead she languishes about Goya's response to the Church, to delusions and illogical monsters, to bizarre depictions of bodily functions, and yet each of these aspects pulsates positively within the series that makes the set of etchings one of the great art works of history.

Hustvedt also discusses the still life paintings through history to the present, including a brilliant essay on Morandi and one on Joan Mitchell, and closes her set of art lessons/aids with a discussion of Gerhard Richter. Each of these extended essays are accompanied by color art reproductions of the works discussed and the design of the book is an artwork in and of itself. As evidence of Siri Hustvedt's dignity this book includes a Colophon that attributes the design and typography of the volume to William Drental and Don Whelan of Winterhouse Studios, Falls Village, Connecticut. It is a quiet homage to the art of book making that is entirely in keeping with the first class presentation of this beautiful and important book. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, March 06

The NATO Vehicle guide, along with the companion Soviet Vehicle guide, provide players and GMs of the popular "Twilight 2000" game with valuable information to use in their campaigns. Specs such as armament and fuel consumption are provided, and there are several pager of color plates. Vehicles such as the American M-1 Abrams main battle tank and the highly effective German Leopard are included in this fine module. I recommend this module for both gamers and GMs. The information provided inside will help you run and play a very realistic campaign.
