A well-written, funny, informative page-turner

I really enjoyed this mystery. It is well written (entirely in the first-person) and quite funny. I am a former university scientist and enjoyed his accurate (but exaggerated) depiction of university politics, as well as his clear and accurate explanations of biological principles. A reader without a scientific background will learn a bit of science, and about the way university science gets done. While this book has no pretense of being literature, it is a real novel with believable characters you care about.

In summary, this mystery is suspenseful and funny, while describing a world you may not know much about, through characters you care about. What more could you want? Highly recommended.

Pull an All-Nighter with Medical School is Murder

Medical school is known for being tough: pulling all nighters, cramming for exams and fighting cutthroat competition. In Medical School is Murder, we get a decidedly different (and much more thrilling) point of view. Through the eyes of protagonist Ben Candidi, the reader goes along a journey of uncovering the hidden agendas of faculty members and corruption of administrators in a major university. This is the side of med school the students never get to see! I pulled an all-nighter reading this book. The suspense makes this latest Wyle mystery hard to put down.
Biotechnology and medical terms weave seamlessly into the plot. Wyle often uses scientific principles as metaphors, showing the hidden aspects of characters. This blend of science with literature makes for a refreshing read: through the eyes of a young scientist we get an unexpected viewpoint. Throughout the suspense, intrigue, corruption (and yes: the love story too) I actually felt smarter when I put the book down. Given the changed world we now live in, with the new threat of harmful biological agents - this murder mystery is not just an entertaining read, it is enlightening as well.

Intrigue with a reluctant hero

Review Date: 2003-02-16
Author Dirk Wyle is at it again. In his smartly drawn "Medical School
is Murder," he's managed to synthesize the worst of crimes with the
best of science, and put them together in a setting that academics
would especially find riveting -- a university campus.

"Medical School is Murder" is Wyle's third Ben Candidi mystery and as
with the first two, Wyle puts his reluctant hero into jeopardy that
emerges as a byproduct of seemingly ordinary circumstances. This time
around, Ben is asked to return to Bryan Medical School in Miami and
finish out the term of an eccentric professor whose body was found in
a canal near the school. All indications suggest that the professor,
Pete Peterson, fell into the canal after suffering a heart attack.
Ben isn't all that keen on taking the job; he'll have to leave his
soul mate behind for a good chunk of time. But accepting the position
will present him with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, not to
mention a much-needed boost to his income, and so he agrees.

All is not well at Bryan Medical School, however, and the more deeply
Ben immerses himself in Peterson's life, the closer he gets to
uncovering a shocking scenario that a lot of his own colleagues
would rather he not explore. When he presses on, the quiet halls of
academia explode in a life-and-death drama that calls for an equal
measure of brain and brawn. Ben's a survivor, but he's no Rambo.
Whether he makes it is entirely up to Dirk Wyle and the wily twists
and turns he always brings to his mysteries.

Sit back. Enjoy the ride. Learn a little science on the way.

Sounds like a winning recipe, and it is

Dirk Wyle is a pseudonym for Duncan H. Haynes, Ph.D. in molecular biology and 30-year veteran of biomedical science. Since 1973 Dr. Haynes has served as a medical school professor in Miami for the past twenty-five years, conducting research in blood coagulation and drug delivery. He has experience with numerous grants, the pharmaceutical industry, and outside financial donors. Eschewing guns, he plots his murders using more devious and interesting weapons.

Ben Candidi returns after the exciting Pharmacology is Murder and Biotechnology is Murder. He has received his coveted Ph.D. and is working with patents for the feds in Washington, D.C. when he is not on his boat with fiancee Rebecca Levis (M.D.). But in murder mysteries life does not remain idyllic for long, and Ben answers a call to return to his alma mater, Bryan Medical School, to take over a grant after fellow scientist Dr. Peter Peterson suddenly dies. Peterson has stipulated in his will that he wants his biography written, which seems like a whim until Ben meets up with a hostile Dean of the College and is attacked in Dr. Peterson's apartment:

"No accident--attacked by a man,'" came the diagnostic from my shocked cerebrum. Escaping. You'll lose him in a few seconds.' I willed myself to my knees and crawled in the direction of the sound. Stumbled to my feet and groped along the wall. A door slammed in the distance. I ran through the front door, hitting my shoulder on its metal frame."

Wyle creates Ben as the playful idealized man: mensa member; looks like Frankie Avalon; can fight like a pit bull; has a steady relationship with the beautiful Rebecca while tossing off adversaries with stumbling panache and outwitting the evil administration. Sounds like a winning recipe, and it is. Medical School is Murder is pure and simple entertainment. Ben Candidi is his adorable self, and Dirk Wyle knows how to stun and delight the reader with clear science put into layman's terms. Medical School is Murder continues Dirk Wyle's winning ways as a feature science mystery writer. Ben is a bicycle-wielding, high energy Gen-Xer who is just rebellious enough to be considered brilliant.

This is a great Christmas story from Tomie dePaola, author of the Strega Nona series. If you have not read Strega Nona yet, I would recommend that you start with that book, so that you are familiar with the characters and all the personality traits that they possess--especially Big Anthony. But, even of you have not read the original book, you will still enjoy the heartwarming Christmas story that focuses more on the meaning of Christmas than your typical Christmas stories that focus on gifts, Santa, and reindeer.

Strega Nona always hosts the entire town at her home for a Christmas celebration, and refuses to use her "magic" to get her work done during the holiday season, because she just does not think it is the right thing to do. As the season progresses throughout the Advent, Big Anthony is supposed to be going to town to buy things to help prepare for another Christmas celebration. But, along the way he gets "sidetracked" and Strega Nona fears that Christmas will be ruined because he has failed to get the items she needs to prepare for her dinner. I don't want to give away the rest of the story, but rest assured, that the true meaning of giving is told, and children will learn a gentle lesson about the true meaning of the spirit of Christmas.

I got this book from my local library whiloe searching through the Tomie dePaola section, but plan to buy my own copy so that we have it to ready every year during the Christmas eason. You and your children will thoroughly enjoy this book.

This is another wonderful book by Tomie de Paola - simple but powerful message, beautiful illustrations, great story. As usual, wise Strega Nona teaches Big Anthony (and us) an important lesson.

For Italian-American families (and anyone interested in other cultures), there is the added bonus of having a number of Italian words and Christmas traditions included in the story - from baccala to zampognari. It is great to be able to share these things with our children. And hey, if Strega Nona likes it, can baccala (dried codfish) be all that bad?

I highly recommend other Tomie de Paola Christmas books: The Legend of Old Befana, Jingle the Christmas Clown, and The Clown of God.

I picked this up off the library shelf, and aside from a few "huh" moments, was not at all bothered that this was third in a series.

This is a mystery, yes, but it is not at all formulaic. The hero of the story, Fever Devlin, a folklorist goth-ish man, doesn't even really solve the mystery, though his logic fu is strong.

The characters are well drawn and the mystery is a good, compelling story. The scenes are drawn well, and one almost feels the air of the Appalachains and tastes the food of the south.

All in all, quite a good story.

Phillip Depoy utilizes a fluid and lyrical prose to depict a man whose fractured soul is caught between the realms of his crippling and fairly surreal past and his hauntingly eerie present circumstances. His blending of folkloric legend with the Georgia Appalachian hill-country setting that is backgound to all of his Fever Devilin mysteries results in a tale that is spellbinding and impossible to set down.

There are so many different parts of the South, it becomes difficult to create a true picture of the region, but Phillip DePoy's A MINISTER'S GHOST is both accurate and electric as he weaves a twisted tale of suspense.
Fever Delvin is a collector of the tales of his home area in the GA mountains. The death of two young women on a railroad crossing leads Fever on a twisted path to discover the truth before someone else falls victim to a crafty killer. He meets unexpected resistance from his old friend Sheriff Skidmore Needle.
This is our first Fever Devilin, but it will not be the last. The characters are so well drawn and the incidents so believable when you have a friend who established a department of folk literature for a university and live in the Cumberland Mountains.

This book is not for everyone. As a reader, one must open oneself to the local culture, atmosphere and old beliefs of hill people where what's real can have a different definition. The characters include little people, a ghost, a snake-handling preacher, hobos, a junk-yard dealer with a unique musical instrument and Fever's best friend, the sheriff who is not acting like himself. The mystery is not the strength of the story. The strength is the unusual, intriguing characters and atmospheric, lyrical writing. Personally, I very much enjoyed this book and this series and want to find out more about these fascinating people.

Such warm feelings of when I was a kid and would see this in the newspapers. I'd even taken to cutting out the daily strips and pasting them into an exercise book in an attempt to compile an entire story. Each story is so well crafted; the art is dark and mysterious. Modesty herself is chic and mesmerising and her sidekick Willie is the coolest guy. What a team! Add internationl intrigue to the mix, and you have the makings of true James Bond-like adventure. What an excellent way to pass a rainy afternoon! More please, more!

There isn't a better story strip from the last 50 years than Modesty Blaise by Peter O'Donnell in the years it was drawn by Jim Holdaway. This volume starts from the beginning of the strip and is one you will read and reread. O'Donnell's writing is top-notch, and Holdaway's art sets a standard that few other other comic strip artists can ever match - and the combination is MUCH greater than the sum of the parts. Titan's presentation is excellent - crisp, large reproduction so the strips really shine. Excellent editorial matter - good introductions and a very useful episode and artist guide to the entire run of the strip.

Over the years there have been several Modesty Blaise reprints. The volumes from Titan are still the best and unlikely to be surpassed. Go for it.

A comic strip legend's legendary beginning

I cannot improve on Mr. Linguini's fine review, but here's mine. Prior to acquiring this volume, I had never read any Modesty Blaise. I'm pleasantly surprised.

The newspaper adventure strip has its special appeal and there is a small but devoted niche of readers for them. I have been reviewing the Checker Book Publishing Group Steve Canyon series, which is wonderfully drawn, imaginative, well-printed and bound, but the reproductions are unfortunately small. Also, I've contracted a seven-year itch after six years' worth of that series. So I tried a little Modesty.

The reproductions here are superb and their size is just right. (A daily strip is about 18 in² compared with the Checker Canyon's 11 in².) The binding is in signatures as are the Canyon strips. The stories have a freshness that is matched by the drawings.

The background story of the heroine is the stuff of legend (I leave it out here), inspired by a real life experience of the author. Her "sidekick" Willie Garvin is nothing like the bearded, buffoonish rustics we see in Canyon and some westerns (Lt. Blueberry, for example): he's her absolutely trusted, trusting and competent lieutenant. This makes for an effective team we care for, even if Garvin does hit no fewer than three women in the first three adventures. Our intolerance for such things today says quite a bit about some of the positive aspects of political correctness. Feminism, with Modesty in the avant-garde, had not yet quite gotten its bearings, but the strong, self-reliant, attractive woman, also being sketched in the co-temporal Avengers TV series, was a beacon for the future. The whole package is very sixties.

I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere, but MB's looks are not conventional - that is, they don't quite fit into the comic strip mold of "beautiful woman." She comes close, though: she is very attractive, as if she's above-average looks-wise and takes perfect care of herself. She has a distinctive look. Whereas the Steve Canyon femme fatales vary in a few shorthand-type lines, Modesty Blaise has a largish nose, a narrow chin and high cheekbones, along with an expression in the eyes that is precisely hers, such that she can't be mistaken for anyone else. Most of the other characters in the series are also clearly distinct from each other. Holdaway's art stands out in this regard. In fact, a lot of Modesty's attractiveness is in her visual expression - a rare achievement in comic art.

This is the kind of strip that might entertain even non-strip readers. The stories are fun, action packed, superbly drawn, and so well paced that we wind up reading them too fast and wanting more when done. I can well understand the cult following this strip has. The Titan books are so well done that they are a sure bet for comic strip collectors or adventure aficionados. The Gabriel Setup is where you should begin: it has the first three adventures plus Modesty's origins. It's my first but by no means my last.

Joan Spencer is walking through the park on her way home from work when a tornado hits. She spots a small girl crying and runs to rescue her. They both survive and Joan receives much gratitude from the girls family. The father of the little girl is Judge David Putnam and is acting in a musical while Joan is playing her viola in the Symphony. Judge Putnam is murdered on stage the 1st night of the performance. Joan and her policeman fiancee Fred are on the hunt for the culprit. Another great cast of characters and what can go on in a small Indiana town where you least expect it. Enjoy!

Sara Hoskinson Frommer has taken all the best elements of a murder mystery. She gets you caring about the characters and wanting to find the killer, and when you find out whodunit, you say to yourself, "Of course, I should have seen that." I loved the Gilbert & Sullivan references at the beginning of each chapter, and what an ingenious, Gilbertian plot twist to murder a "ghost." The only problem is that I am a Gilbert & Sullivan performer, and I'm going to be afraid if I ever get cast in the role of Sir Roderic Murgatroyd.

This is one of the better books of a good series, funny and exciting with an "edge of your seat" narrative. Lora Roberts does an excellent job portraying the edgier side of life in her Liz Sullivan series, where money isn't always available and sometimes the Thrift Shop is a necessity. Yet, she also manages to lighten this with some wonderful and sly humor and engaging friends. Liz's friends (including her dog) bring her much needed support and enrich the stories though they take a backseat in this book (except for a couple of memorable and surprisingly funny scenes at gunpoint). This particular book in the series was mesmerizing. I couldn't put it down till I found out what happened to Liz and her latest "temp job from h-ll." If you haven't read any of the previous books I would recommend you do so to see how Lora has allowed Liz to grow into herself. Yet, this books stands alone as a wonderful and exciting adventure.

Freelance writer Liz Sullivan takes on a temp job as media escort for food/lifestyle celebrity Hannah Couch, who, it turns out, is quite the opposite of her friendly, grandmotherly image. And her waspish, vindictive personal assistant, Naomi Matthews, is even worse. After someone downs a fatal Pellegrino with lime, and a couple of abductions at gunpoint ensue, Liz, who is a prime suspect, must find out who doctored the drink. Though two of the major characters are exceedingly unpleasant, there are plenty of more appealing ones, not the least of which is Liz herself, a likable, sympathetic amateur detective. On the whole, this whodunit is funny, sometimes outlandish, and very entertaining. This is the first of Lora Roberts' mysteries I've read, and I now plan on reading the first four books of the series.

Character Liz Sullivan finds herself in a temp job straight from hell in the newest installment of this wonderful series. She has to serve every whim of the great domestic celebrity, Hannah Couch. Liz finds herself in danger from everything including being slapped, not being able to find fresh produce, being kidnapped, and being a suspect in a homicide. After a little time with Hannah, she also finds herself in danger of wanting to commit what readers would probably call a justifiable homicide. Lora Roberts has some of the funniest lines available in mysteries, reminding me often of Janet Evanovich's books. Liz's romance with the Paul Drake is exciting and endearing, and makes readers wish for more! Her friend Bridget worries more about picking up her kids on time than finding herself held at gunpoint. This cast is fun and could be anyone's neighbors and friends. I hope Lora Roberts will write many more of these clever books!

This book was really incredibly written. Even though I have never read any books in the series except this one, I'm sure that this book was a good one to start with. Murder Follows Money is funny in it's own way, and also provides an amazing mystery which was also fun to solve. I read this book in one entire day, all during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I just couldn't put it down. It made me sad when I had finally finished the book. It was one of those page-turning mysteries that I absolutely love. I feel that Lora Roberts has created a never-ending series with a very interesting character. Liz Sullivan is the kind of character that you wish that you could get to know in person. Believe me, this is a great book and I recommend it to anybody who loves mystery!

Murder Follows Money is the best yet in a great series. Liz has taken a temporary job with a media escort business. She's hired to do clerical work, but is pressed into service when none of the regulars are willing to escort the famous but difficult lifestyle maven Hannah Couch. Hannah arrives in San Francisco with her entourage - an interesting cast of characters who have their own troubles with Hannah. When one of them turns up dead, Liz is again pressed into service. At gunpoint. She is also the chief suspect. The mystery is entertaining and kept me turning the pages. The solution to the double bind Liz finds herself in is both clever and great fun. I found myself chuckling al the way through. Many characters from the earlier books are here, but it isn't necessary to have read earlier books to enjoy this one. A great summer read. Highly recommended.

I love the Murder She Wrote series, and "Provence--to die for," is no exception. I enjoyed the characters and setting for this entry in the series. Jessica travels to Provence, France, where she hopes to spend quiet time away from home. But murder follows her, as usual, and her reverie is cut short. Donald Bain and his wife, Renee, have continued a series adored by millions, and hope they persevere with Jessica's fun, and sometimes dangerous travels. Jessica Fletcher is my favorite detective in the business! I only wish she was a real person. I'd love to meet her one day!

Although I prefer the setting of the Murder She Wrote novels in Cabot Cove, I just say that this is one of my favories. It's interesting and filled with French culture and wonderful food! Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

The older Jessica gets, the more wiser she becomes. "Provence To Die For" is one of the most mysterious books in the Murder She Wrote series. Traveling to an unfamiliar country in Jessica's latest adventure, so many readers will wish they were there with her as she stumbles upon clue after clue trying to right a wrong of a clever culprit. I couldn't put the book down, as I was taking it with me where ever I went. Chapter Three is my favorite chapter, as it depicts Jessica on a dark and lonley farmhouse surrounded with strange noises--or is it only the wind? This book is a page turner, as many readers will agree, and the best in the series. That's hard for me to acknowledge because of the earlier works by Donald Bain, and which I enjoyed immensely--"Brandy and Bullets," "A Deadly Judgment," "A Palette For Murder," "The Highland Fling Murders," "Murder on the QE2," "Murder in Moscow," "A Little Yuletide Murder," and "Knock 'em Dead."

Barry Humphries admirably fleshes out the life of his most famous comic creation - Dame Edna Everage from Moonee Ponds housewife to beaming megastar. Like on TV, Edna is an outrageously egotistical tyrant who we find out has bullied Madge Allsop since High School and even danced with her cultural compatriate Les Patterson at a teenage formal. Here you will see how Edna saved Barry Humphries stage debut and has had him under her solicitors thumbs for several years. For sharp Edna/Barry enthusiasts there are a few questionable moves Humphries has made in the book though - 1) He is cheeky in that he leaves out a number of years in Edna's life as he did in his own biography. Why? 2) Edna started off as shy and genteel in the 50's. Here she is as bold as brass all the way. No real character change. 3) Her nephew "Barry McKenzie" is never mentioned. They did go to England together and do two movies together after all. Yet, despite these quibbles, there is Humphries characteristic razor sharp wit throughout and even a moving epilogue where Edna visits her husbands grave. In this there is a wonderful pathos which makes Humphries dedication to his character and his audience first class. Fans should look for other out of print Edna titles such as "Dame Ednas Coffee Table Book" if they enjoy this.

This is one of my all-time must-haves in the car...so that I can relisten to it any time LIFE gets a little too real, and I need a mini-mental vacation while driving. (It's an ideal gift too.)

It's a joy, and Dame Edna never fails to bring me back to a gentler reality.

I'm sorry to say that it hasn't been rereleased in Audio CD. I'm hoping that it will be available in that format in the future.

Fabulous!

I purchased this book on tape for the listening pleasure of my friends and myself on a recent vacation. We have never laughed so hard! Since then, I've listened to it numerous times, and each time I pick up something new. Dame Edna is a true gem!

I've been a fan of Dame Edna's for years and I have to say that this faux autobiography is one of the funniest books I have ever read. Starting from her humble beginnings (with mauve hair even then) we see our lovely Edna blossom into womanhood, marriage and motherhood---though she rarely has time to properly look after the kids because of her hectic and famous life. As an advisor to the rich, famous and royal (a spin doctor, in her words, to the Queen), Edna becomes a superstar in her own right---struggling with her troublesome childhood friend, Madge Allsop, who Edna lets us know, is a burden a good deal of the time! Edna deals with many dramas----her eccentric children, her husband with his desperate prostrate problem and the trials of being so easily recognizable to the general public. If you wanna read a book with a great deal of laughs, try to find a copy of this book. You won't be disappointed.

A Must Read for Dame Edna Fans!

If you love Dame Edna (and who doesn't?) and her rapier-sharp wit and wordly wisdom, this is the book for you. This autobiographical journey follows the housewife megastar from her sometimes painful childhood in Moonee Ponds to her meeting the man she would marry (and later purchase a new mechanical prostate for) to her meteoric rise to stardom (accompanied by her ever-present, though not always welcome bridesmaid, Madge). It's a laugh a minute, not unlike the Douglas Adams series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. it will make you laugh out loud on public transport and guffaw during your tea-break (even though Dame Edna might disapprove of these slight breaches of etiquette). Pick it up, possums. It's likely the closest you'll ever get to this megastar.

Rev. Scott expounds on Paul's Ephesians verse by verse for God's children today. So that we can be aware of every spiritual blessing poured on each of us through God's grace. And shows how God empowers us to live in goodness and righteousness. It is a fine study for personal use or use in groups. I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed the insightful blessings of God's Word conveyed through this commentary of the book of Ephesians. Rev. Scott does a really great job of providing clear understanding of the truths in the book of Ephesians that can be practically applied to our daily living. He gives excellent examples to reinforce the insights that he brings forth throughout this commentary. I appreciated the summary of each chapter's main points at the end of the book. This is a very good resource for personal devotions or group study. I highly recommend this book!

I am very fortunate to have known Rev. Byron Scott as a minister and as a friend. I have had the pleasure of hearing him preach from the book of Ephesians and this book is a great reminder of what is expected of us as Christians. This is definitely a must read! I am looking forward to reading more of Byron's books.
