Many manufacturing technology professors feel unsure about the nature and teaching computer integrated manufacturing (CIM)in their program. James A. Rehg and Henry W. Kraebber are dynamic authors, as they present CIM as a technical and strategic function of an organization. They offer a technical and management-based approach for understanding and implementing CIM in the "world class manufacturing" settings. Unlike other CIM books, Computer Integrated Manufacturing is written from the manufacturing technology professor's point of view with technical expertise. The CIM model used is consistent with the SME Manufacturing Enterprise Wheel developed by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. This books explains the fundamental principles as well as practical applications of computer integrated manufacturing in a clear and effective manner and the illustrations and complement the text well.

It covers linear control processes well.
Best it gives MatLab code for plotting responses and solved
problems.
It has a 6th order filter called Chebyshev digital filter
that has a very near flat top as a band pass in the Bode plot!
These methods aren't well covered in my other books
and will be of use in studying nonlinear systems as well.

a must read for all 2nd/3rd year electronic engg. students

I was hunting for a single book which covers the area of signals and systems, communication theory, design (transforms related to these topics) using MATLAB (I have a student version 5.0). Every topic is well illustrated with MATLAB programs along with the associated terms, definitions and the mathematical details along with figures for proper visualization. This book an excellent supplement to standard textbooks in these areas. The presentation is crisp and clear. I experienced the "joy of understanding" while using this text with the software. GRAB A COPY AND UNDERSTAND THE WORLD OF TRANSFORMS!

A Must Have Reference on Better Practice for Everyone Working with Industrial Measurement and Control Systems Applications
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-04

This book covers one of the most important topics to assure that a Control and Safety System can perform at its intended highest availability, reliability and safety level. In the other hand is hard to find books that treat this topic with the practical detail and clarity needed for real world industrial applications, the ones you may face at your job while working either in an engineering, project, operational, or maintenance department in any given Plant or Industry. If you work with PLCs, DCSs, SCADAs, ESDs, SISs, Hybrid Systems, or just single loop controllers or measurement applications, you will find what are considered the best or recommended practices in industry, as well as warnings, cautions, and notes on essential and critical information about Power, Grounding and Shielding issues.

Anther thing I liked about this book is that it is profusely illustrated with diagrams and tables that make it even friendlier when looking for advice on specific issues.

I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control who has been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. As a result I have been dealing with Control Systems Power, Grounding and Shielding issues in a day-to-day basic. I found this book to be a very useful reference and a refresher, that will be useful for experienced and newcomers engineers and Technicians to gain a better understanding of almost every aspect that has to be consider to ensure that all the Control Systems you are accountable for have been properly installed.

A Literate, Well Written Engineering Text
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-31
"Control Systems, Safety Evaluation & Reliability" by William M. Goble, Ph.D.
A well-written book that presents fundamentals of reliability, probability and safety in a literate fashion. Dr. Goble, a graduate of Villanova University in Pennsylvania, has put together a literate presentation of reliability, probability mathematics and the basics of safety. This single volume represents a concise and easy flowing approach to the calculation of the probability of occurrence of an event that can affect the safety of your process control plant. The book begins with basics ("Understanding Random Events") but soon has you performing Markov analyses and working on "coverage". In fact, Bill Goble's explanation of the "coverage factor", page 313, is one of the best I have seen. If an analyst follows the layout of this book, and performs all the steps, as indicated by Dr. Goble, then the final result will include a system model, identify the important or crucial failure modes, calculate the probability of the occurrence of those crucial failure modes and provide a Markov model of the entire crucial/critical part of the safety system. All of this will allow the analyst to perform the required mathematical description of the safety system, so as to meet or exceed the requirements of the IEC Standard IEC 61508. Dr. Goble uses this book as the text for an ISA course with almost the same title as the title of the book. Dr. Goble follows the book implicitly in the ISA course I attended in 1999, and I enjoyed his vitalized presentation greatly. He emphasized the need for Failure Modes And Effects Analyses so as to identify crucial/critical failure modes, and the need for the FMEA to develop the proper Markov model for the system/sub-system. The book is so well written that I do not expect the typical engineer to have many questions, but, if you want an entertaining presentation and an enjoyable classroom experience, take Dr. Goble's ISA course with this book. I highly recommend this book to not only engineers concerned with probability of safety events, but for the general reliability engineer.

An authoritative book on evaluation of safety protection performance
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-10

The ability to numerically evaluate control systems design parameters, like safety and reliability, have always been important in order to balance the tradeoffs between cost, performance and maintenance in control systems design. However there is more involved than just economics. Proper protection of personnel and the environment have become the issue. Increasingly, quantitative analysis of safety and reliability is becoming essential as international regulations require justified and measured safety protection performance.

Safety and reliability are important design constraints for control systems. When those involved in the system design share common vocabulary, understand evaluation methods, include all site variables and understand how to evaluate reliable hardware and software, then safety and reliability can become true design parameters.

The book is organized as follows:
- Introduction.
- Understanding random events.
- Failures: Stress versus strength.
- Reliability and safety.
- Failure modes and effects analysis.
- Fault tree analysis.
- Network modelling.
- Markov modelling.
- Diagnostics.
- Common cause.
- Software reliability.
- Medeling detail.
- Reliability and safety model construction.
- System architectures.
- Safety instrumented systems.
- Life cycling costing.
APPENDICES:
- Standard normal distribution table.
- Matrix math.
- Probability theory.
- Reliability parameters.
- Continuos-time markov modeling.
- Answers to exercises.

This book will be a valuable reference for anyone involved with control and safety systems. I am an industrial practitioner that has been working for the last 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry. This book is always on my shelf, and has been useful many times during my career.

If you have the chance, take a course with Dr. Goble. You will gain a big insight to the world of reliability engineering applied to instrumentation and control systems, that without a doubt will help you in your day to day work if you are involved with control systems.

The tittle says it all...

The only thing I want to say is to Amazon (and resellers):

Please make up your mind of what volume are you selling. It's simple: there are two: I (basic) and II (advanced). DIfferent book, different ISBN, different all... Still, when yoy try to purchase, you get confused results...

Otherwise, the best book of thermodynamics in two millenia (at leat).

Kestin's A Course in Thermodynamics: A Great Surprise.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-13
I am a professor at Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Medellin. My teaching activities are related with thermodynamics and transport phenomena. I know the book by Kestin on thermodynamics (A course in Thermodynamics, revised printing, Volume 1, 1979, Washington: Hemisphere Publishing Corporation; I could not get the volumen 2); this is one I use preferably in my teaching of the subject, together with the book by K. Denbigh, the book by H. Callen, and, lately, the book by Kondepudi & Prigogine. In my opinion, one of the features of the book is the abundance of details used by the author to explain the different concepts. Those details may seem sometimes very overwhelming, but if one insists in going through them, it would pay later in the form of a better comprehension of the items. According to my own conception of teaching of a science like thermodynamics, Kestin's book is the most appropriate to present the different aspects of the subject. In which senses is this book different from others on the same subject? I will refer briefly to some of them. Chapter 2: Temperature and Temperature Scales. The treatment of this theme remembered me the book by Zemansky, a true classic. Here Kestin is excellent. Chapter 4: Work. This is the only book I know that makes a comparison between the concept of work in mechanics and the definition of work in thermodynamics. As a professor, I witness the real confusion in students when they go from physics courses to thermodynamics courses; they often think that there is a mistake somewhere. Chapter 6: Introduction to the Analysis of Continuous Systems and the First Law of Thermodynamics for Open Systems. This is another proof of Kestin's honesty and perfectionism: most of the books on thermodynamics, at undergraduate level, extend the application of the laws of thermodynamics to open systems without any reference to the required assumptions to do that. They forgive that properties like temperature, energy and entropy have sense only in systems at equilibrium, and open systmes are not. Kestin, as far as he is concerned, introduces the principle of local state, only an approximation that allowed the development of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes since the beginning of the 20th century. I think details like this must be known by students and people interested in the subject. In an interesting idea, the author introduces two chapters -7 and 8- to "provide the necessary descriptive background for a physical understanding of a variety of systems"; doing so, there is an interruption in the exposition of the zero (ch.2), first (ch.5), and second (ch.9) laws of thermodynamics, but it can be tolerated in view of the goal of the author. Other novelties include: there is a clear distiction between quasistatic reversible and quasistatic irreversible processes, something you do not find in some books; there is also a distinction between classical thermodynamics(the real subject of the book) and statistical mechanics (statistical thermodynamics); some statistical concepts are used but in an appropriate way: when they contribute to a deeper understanding of the subject. Finally, I do not hesitate to recommend this book, mainly to teachers of the subject. Unfortunately our universities are shortening time devoted to the teaching of subjects like thermodynamics to introduce other subjects; but even in these cases a book like the one I have commented is very useful for a teacher: He or she can select those themes he or she wants to emphasize, what requires a good knowledge of the subject, something that Kestin's book can provide with absolute certainty. In spite of my difficulties in written english , It has been very pleasant to comment this book for you. Is my english understandable? Sincerely,

This book is definitely a strong addition to the body of knowledge for Reliability Professionals and for any Company that wants to improve the business competitiveness by improving the product reliability.

The book clearly provides the correct focus on the customer, but it also elaborates on the fact that one customer is the corporate business enterprise.

The book shows the optimum sequence of DfR activities in the development phases. This book also has impressive details for the specific DfR elements. It is also an excellent resource for guidance into specific details.

I like the balance of graphics with text and the graphics added excellent additional understanding.

This is an outstanding Industry leader that has documented the implemented practice in this book.

I did not attempt to verify every mathematical formula.

Technical Content From Author

Review Date: 2001-05-11
As one of the authors/editors of this book, let me describe the valuable technical content. First, let me impress upon you that this is a rare practical work in reliability written by members of a highly technical company that apply reliability science every day to products. Thus, academics are stressed only as a tool. Therefore, this book has something for everyone. It starts off with a management perspective on how to organize a reliability program. Chapter 1 - 5 overview a unique stage-gate approach to growing reliability. What tools and building blocks are needed from a management perspective to be world-class. What tests to perform when is also key. This approach assures optimum reliability grow in a commercial atmosphere of on-time reliable product deliveries. The book then evolves technically providing essential engineering topics. Chapter 6 describes key information for performing process reliability studies. Chapter 7, is without question a compact chapter on failure analysis that describes each analysis tool including SEM, SAM, EDS, FTIR, FIB, SIMS, etc. The numerous physics of failure analysis examples in diffusion, corrosion, intermetallics, ESD etc are illustrated with detailed FA images. Then Chapter 8 provides what you need to know for reliability statistics. It covers basic definitions for failure rate, CDF, PDF, the main distributions used (Weibull, lognormal, Exponential, Normal). A well-organized chapter presenting key essential reliability statistics needed in industry. Chapter 9 details accelerated testing, the primary historical equations governing temperature, temperature-humidity, vibration and temperature cycle/shock, and electromigration. It provides common sense guidelines for assessing overstressing. How to use these equations for test planning. Advance topics including Step-stress and how to describe life distributions as a function of stress. Chapter 10 on Accelerated Reliability Growth is fairly unique. What tests do you perform and when, using stage-gate and recent accelerated reliability growth mathematics for planning. Growth can be obtained and assessed in a timely manner. Chapter 11 provides the essential for system reliability. Series, parallel, and n of k subsystems as well as predicting reliability using both Bellcore, and 217 methods are addressed. Chapter 12 is an excellent overview of FMEA. Chapter 13 teaches methods for evaluating product risk and conducting risk program management. Lastly, Chapter 14 is an advanced topic, thermodynamic reliability engineering. No other book teaches thermodynamics and how the 1st and 2nd laws are fundamental to the science for Physics-of-Failure. In no other book can a reader find derivations for accelerated testing time compression expressions in fatigue, temperature-humidity, Miner's rule, and diffusion. Additionally, an advanced Arrhenius kinetic topics on logarithmic-in-time aging are provided. This topic as a seminar received the highest ratings at the 2001 RAMS conference. Thank You - Alec Feinberg.

This book includes a great amount of detail for designers. Covers winding, materials, magnetics, thermal considerations, etc. Has plenty of equations that are required for design. Both authors are well known and fellows of the IEEE.

The book lacks details of motor construction, which I have not found anywhere yet. Also wish it came with a software tutorial or something. But the best book on motors I have found yet, and I've looked (and bought) a number of them.
