This book is lots of fun for kids to practice cutting & glueing. My 5 yr old son did it when he was 4 and is now doing it again. He can do it on his own now (with a glue stick.) The graphics & paper quality of this book is great. Keeps em busy!

fun and educational book for any preschooler

The layout and the concepts of this book are excellent. The twenty assignments contain two different tasks--using scissors and assembling puzzles. However, I believe the recommended age is off especially assembling the puzzle part. I believe the appropriate age for this book is two-and-half to three-and-half. However, I wish Kumon would made a little more challenging by increasing to fifteen-piece puzzles or more. My daughter used to play with a fifty-piece puzzle when she was three. Her current challenge is one hundred-piece puzzle.

My Son is only 2.5 yrs old, but loves puzzles and also likes to use the glue and paste. Since it was too much for me to keep on buying wooden puzzles, I got this book even though the age range was different. He is enjoying them immensely (though I have to do the cutting for him).
Cons:
Since the puzzle pieces and the pieces in the solution page come numbered, with the first puzzle, he simply started matching the numbers and got it right in a sec! Since then I have him solve the puzzle outside on the table and then make him stick the pieces on the solution page. I feel this could have been avoided.
One improvement would be to make it spiral bound so that you dont have to hold the pages while the kid is working!

This is a nice book of jigsaw puzzles. There are 20 puzzles, and there are two pages for each puzzle. The first page has the colorful puzzle pieces that the child cuts apart. The second page is a guide that the child uses to assemble and paste the jigsaw pieces. The puzzles range from 4 to 12 pieces.

Great for active kids

Texans, Gun Control & a Japanese take on them

Having been born and raised in the Texas that Kawaguchi attempts to capture in his portrayal (done fairly well, IMHO, if a bit stereotyped), I think I can safely say that if Yamaoka really had walked into a Texas bar and given that pitch on gun control, he never would have walked back out again. Well, he would have, but only on a stretcher. Other than that, it's good book, and that ends on a cliffhanger, no less.

Intriguing

The mangaka (manga creator) of Eagle is Kaiji Kawaguchi, who is famous for his manga The Silent Service, which English language critics have called "reminiscent of Tom Clancy", because it utilized the rogue submarine premise of The Hunt for Red October. Eagle is a both a commentary on politics in modern America and a somewhat soap-operatic story of relationships. At the beginning of the story, reporter Takashi Jo is called to his boyhood home on Okinawa, a small island in the Japanese archipelago, to identify the body of his mother. While he is going through his mother's apartment, he notices that the picture of his father, an American soldier who he never knew, is missing from its customary place. Shortly after this, he learns that he has been assigned to go to America to cover the campaign of Kenneth Yamaoka, a Democratic senator from New York who has recently announced that he will campaign for the Democratic nomination for president. The reason for his selection is baffling to Takashi, and to his colleagues and superiors - he has never covered politics or international affairs, and he admits to himself that his articles were merely filler for the local editions of the paper he works for, the Maicho Shimbun.

Takashi learns, not long after arriving in America, that the reason for his selection was personal, not because of his professional qualifications. As a reporter, he has to struggle to maintain his objectivity in the face of ambivalent feelings about Senator Yamaoka, animosity from the Senator's wife Patricia, his love for the Senator's adopted daughter and press secretary, Rachel, and the shifting political currents around the charismatic senator. The first four volumes of Eagle (about 100 pages each) have been released both individually and as part of an omnibus edition which combines the four volumes into one paperback. Kawaguchi traces the senator's personal history, telling the story of his transformation from enlisted soldier to influential lawyer to politician, and reveals enough of the behind the scenes story and the public events - fundraisers, debates, and primaries - of Yamaoka's campaign to make the reader want to know more.

Kawaguchi's drawings are more realistic than those of most of the manga which have been translated and released in America; they couldn't be called superdeformed or kawaii (cute) by any stretch of the imagination. The artistic style goes well with the story and mood of this manga. I'm definitely hooked, and I can't wait to read the four forthcoming volumes of this series, to see what happens next.

This is starting to get interesting. . .

If you've read my review on the first volume of the "Eagle" saga, you know that I wasn't particularly impressed with it. Well, I have to say that this volume had me truly enthraled. Particularly the "debate" between Yamaguchi (? sorry I can't quite keep his name straight) and Albert "Noah." The whole buisiness of 'is it better to train the sheep or the sheepherders?' really had my attention. I found my self arguing with both men. I'm still not absolutely certain that this book is a keeper, but the fact that I was internally debating the characters is a good sign (for me, anyway) that this novel is going somewhere. So far, this has been the best novel in the series. I'm looking forward to reading more. I won't make any other comment than that - I have to read more of it before I can say yea or nay to it.

An interesting concept.

With the presidential election right around the corner, Kaiji Kawaguchi's political manga makes it's timely arrival. The plot revolves around a young Japanese reporter and the Asian-American presidential candidate that it is his job to cover. While the art was very good, and the idea behind it was intriguing, I'm afraid I wasn't terribly immpressed with Kawaguchi-san's work. Perhaps it is a doubt as to whether a Nihon-jin can really understand the American political system, perhaps it is just that he hits too close to home. The story has potential, I'll say that much. I won't give up on it yet.

If Amazon offered EIGHT stars, this would be the book that would do it. The 500 plus puzzles shown, are simply gorgeous in full color and provide a vehicle for the true purpose of the book - a presentation of beautiful paintings as expressed on puzzles. The informative and fascinating artist biographies and collecter's value guide make this the perfect book for puzzle collectors and art lovers, alike. I was delighted by this wonderful book and find it brings more enjoyment everytime I open it.

Beautiful to hold and read - art and puzzle lore in one!

Not just for puzzle fans! A stunning presentation - famous and not famous, new and familiar art as represented in jigsaw puzzles over the years. Presented with tidbits of information scattered throughout the book, it's a pleasure to hold, to handle and to browse. I intended to buy just one for a puzzle fan friend, but now I find that I want to keep the copy I have and am buying another to give away. And, if you have any old puzzles in the attic - check it out! They may be more than lovely to look at - they may be worth something too! Beautifully indexed and edited - a real pleasure.

I bought this puzzle book for my 2 year old son. Some of the puzzles are a bit challenging because they don't have a lot of picture and color, but he can usually do them with a little help. Now that he has done some of them a few times, he can do those on his own. The pieces are a little thinner than I would like. We keep the plastic sleeves on to make sure the pieces don't fall out. They do seem to be in there pretty tight though. I'm on the fence about a repeat purchase.

Love it and very durable

What a great heavy keepsake book/toy! You will not be dissappointed by this jigsaw book. Each page has its own clear plastic sleeve, to keep the pieces securely in. Every page is hard back. The text and pictures that correspond with each puzzle page is fabulous. My daughter is 4 and we do this together, as it is to advanced for her to do it independently. Also, each piece is color coded in case of a mix up. Great deal!

Next step up from peg puzzles

I got this book for my almost three year old daughter because I thought it would combine two of her great loves, reading and puzzles. She really loves the books in this series. Although she still likes her peg puzzles they no longer challenge her. This book is the next step up of puzzle evolution. Each page features a drawing of an animal with some mode of transportation broken into an easy 6 piece puzzle on the left side and a colorful picture of a child or children on the right. At first my daughter needed a lot of help to put the puzzles together but as time goes by she needs less and less assistance. The book is very sturdy cardboard but it may be a little difficult to fit the pieces together until the book has been broken in to a little bit. After several uses the pieces seemed to fit in more easily. The ryhmes are cute and overall I would say this is book is a great find. I would have given it five stars if the puzzle pieces were a bit thicker but that is just nit picking.

This is the first part of a series about a different world, placed in some medieval times, in which a king departs to unknown lands in the search of a magic object that can save the life of his fiancée, the princess Aguamarina.

The book is written in a capturing way, and it is very easy to read (I finished it in the very same day) with some (hidden) references to the Christian legacy, in the spirit of the Narnia books; recommended for children.

I used to order a LOT of books from the Scholastic book club. I think I must have ordered something from every flyer until high school, which was when the edjumucashunal system decided that we were too old for recreational reading. It won't come as a shock that I ended up with a LOT of really bad books. The Graveyard School books happen to be among the bad. These aren't the worst I've read, but they certainly aren't the best.

This book really wasn't that bad a read, at least not back in the day. School lunches aren't fun to eat, so there's always a certain glee for a kid to find in a book by an ADULT who realizes that the stuff is terrible. After a giggle, and one read through, you'll never touch it again, even if you're in the age group it's aimed at. Also, it's not exactly aimed at a highbrow audience. No big words, no real purpose, just entertainment reading.

I feel that it's sort of necessary to point out that in the mid-`90s there were a glut of cheap books published to rake in the interest in pre-teen horror-thrillers generated by R. L. Stine's Goosebumps series. These were published by Scholastic, making them a tad bit better than the ones that hit the dollar stores, but not by much. Also, the jigsaw puzzle it comes with is about three by four inches and made out of thin stuff that barely qualifies as cardboard. Don't get your hopes up for getting a really cool prize.

This is a book best left for school libraries, and not something you want to pay to have on your home bookshelf.

His book proven wrong.

I would say and write that everyone read the BOOK The Late Great Palate Earth, and ignore jigsaw and other books like it. BUT, if you do read Jigsaw you will see that Bacchiocchi sets out to argue that Hal Lindsey is a false Prophet because he predicted four events in his first book and five hear in his scond on this subject, that Bacchiocchi believes will never happen. Bacchiocchi claim that Europe could NEVER unite. Well, they are uniting, right in front of our own eyes. It started with the treaty of Rome that was pushed by Claude Monet, and has worked into the EU and a unified Currency. Hal shows how the Bible predicts that 10 nations would start this off and that is exactly how it is happening as Ten European nations did sign the original EU agreement. So I would say that Bacchiocchi's argument falls apart already. If you read his book you will see his other arguments fall apart as well, all you have to do is turn on the news to figure that out. Lindsey wrote the Late Great Planate earth in the late 1960s and in it he also warned us about the Islamic Explosion (long before anyone else sounded the alarm bell). Lindsey also shows how the Prophecies of Israel's return, from all over the world, to there land (1948), is a key sign to the end times; He also shows how it was predicted, in the Bible, that they would come back into Israel first, and get Jerusalem back at a later time (1967). Hal shows how the Bible predicts how there will be four major spears of influence in the world in the end times; Including a united Europe (Europe is uniting and its Happening in front of our own eyes); an Arab and Muslims confederation (Iran, Jordan, Libya, etc.,) with the same goal of defeating Israel; The Russians and her allies in the North (Most of the -stain countries, all part or all Muslim country's) and an Asian Power base (China, India). All of this is lining up right as I write, are you going believe your own eyes or mockers like Samuele Bacchiocchi; Read Hal's book for your self and study the scriptures for yourselves and make up your own mind. Just remember As the Apostle Peter wrote in 2 Peter Chapter 3 remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles. First of all you must understand this, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own passions and saying, "Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation." In my opinion, Case closed. I am still waiting for Bacchiocchi to apologies to Hal Lindsey for his slander.

Clearly Devastates Hal Lindsey's Case

After reading many of Hal Lindsey's books including the revised ones - reading this book was an eye-opener. The Associated Church Press is right in awarding the 1987 citation to Dr. Bacchiocchi. This is a very scholarly work which is very much appreciated by Christian leaders even in the Evangelical world. It clearly debunks the many false predictions made by Hal Lindsey that has deceived many Christians. I used to believe in Hal Lindsey's ideas but no more. Thanks to Dr. Bacchiocchi for a job well done.
