Fun for kids!

Review Date: 2008-09-17
A lot of fun for kids, teachers (and parents for vacations). A brief and modernized view of a Shakespeare play. Lets kids get as melodramatic as they want, learn a little Shakespeare - which includes some famous lines they'll recognize when they get to high school - and it's all wrapped into a 10 minute play. The "adapter" of the play put in some modern language the kids will understand and give them the overall story. The play can be adapted for any number of actors.

Well done! Any more coming?

Collection by one of America's best contemporary playwrights
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-15
Donald Margulies is one of the best playwrights currently at work in the American theater. His view of, particularly, middle class family life is elevated above the ordinary by Margulies' ability to observe his characters' struggles with the sharpest of eyes, while making his audience see and sympathize with the different points of view. His plays exploring the life of the artist also resonate. Margulies' earlier plays play with surrealism and comedy, while in the more recent plays he has used his knack for shuffling time and place to illuminate what appear to be ordinary lives. The Model Apartment is a remarkable play that dares to explore the fallout of the Holocaust through a lens of comedy, with powerful results. I look forward to a next volume of collected works of this extraordinary playwright.

ZORA NEALE HURSTON AT HER BEST
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-27
THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL! HURSTON IS A WONDERFUL WRITER. IT IS A SHAME THAT SUCH A TALENTED WRITER DID NOT RECEIVE MUCH RECOGNITION UNTIL AFTER HER DEMISE. "THE GILDED SIX-BITS" HAS TO BE THE MOST COMPELLING SHORT STORY WITHIN THIS ANTHOLOGY. IT IS A VIVID TALE THAT TRULY REFLECTS THE POWER OF MONEY. IT ILLUSTRATES THE EXTENT THAT SOME PEOPLE WILL GO TO IN ORDER TO GET THEIR HANDS ON "THE GREEN." SIMULTANEOUSLY, IT DOES REINFORCE THE IDEA THAT "ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD." MOST IMPORTANTLY, THIS STORY ILLUSTRATES THE POWER OF LOVE AND THE BEAUTY OF LOYALTY AND "FORGIVENESS." NEVER BEFORE HAVE A READ SUCH A POSITIVE STORY ABOUT AFRICAN-AMERICAN LOVE.

This is a phenomenal text that is a great resource for directors looking to expand our work in new venues including regional theatre, festivals, and abroad. The introduction by Moisés Kaufman sets a tone of community, stressing the need for collaboration between theatre directors and not just between directors and other theatre artists which I found to be very refereshing. The entire book is set up to do that; share information about our craft.

The book gives a really exploration of that drama may do with history. And particullary the so difficult history of the Shoah.
The book has a very good knowledge of theatre of Israel and of New York. It's really a very interessant exploration. And the book has also a pertinent approach of the tragedy of the Shah.

a super dense collection of valuable tips
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-15
Lots of wide ranging, useful Intermediate Plus level tips. Of the 557 tips, at least 500 are good, the otehrs are bit too obvious.

Great value for the money. This contains twice as much material as many otehr books, despite its only being 210 pages

Lots of hands with the tip presented, so you can see the tip in action, not just read it.

Kantar is funny as usual. Lots of amusing quips.

The only warning is you will get the most out of this book if you are already familiar with many of these tips. They will reinforce your knowledge.

A very fine book

This Is Not A Chair (It Is A Gem)
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-26
wow! caryl churchill has done it again. she never ceases to amaze, amuse and intrigue. i especially like her last few works (hotel, blue hearts and of course, this is a chair).

her works are getting more experimental and minimal (hotel, this is a chair), and at the same time, never losing their complexity and intellectual (as well as entertainment) values.

i suspect most of the audience who watch this play will not be able to comprehend what's going on if they try to connect the title of each scene with the scene itself. the more you try to connect, the more they do not make sense. that's the whole point. for example, the first scene is entitled 'the war in bosnia', but the scene has absolutely nothing to do with the war. that's why the play is so powerful. the more the titles are 'alienated' from the scenes, the more they make you think about the issues (of bosnia, genetic engineering, hong kong, pornography and censorship, etc).

my only complain is the price. us$9.95 for a 32-pager is not cheap, but then again, i just had to have the book.

A bloody, brilliant, gnawingly humane cry from the gut. It broke my heart and was thought-provoking in the extreme. Eno is clearly gifted and just starting the ascension to the top of his game
