Party On(?)Review Date: 2002-09-13
I give a LOT of children's parties, most of which include storytelling and crafts. I purchased the book because the kids absolutely loved the ideas in the Book of Wizard Craft by the same authors (which, by the way, I used at several parties in the last year). This one falls short of the Craft book on several counts:
While using the same format as the Book of Wizard Craft, this volume has less substance and more fluff. Many of the activities appeared in more complete form the Craft book. The stories are not as well developed and the art is poor.
The illustrator, Marla Baggetta, tried to copy Lindy Burnett's style for this volume, but fell short of the freshness and vitality of the illustrations in the Craft book. Double-page spreads for each theme do nothing but act as filler, as does the same wizard's robe which appears in each section and then again in the back of the book with only slight variations in decoration.
The wizard "author" mentions in the introduction that it took 600 years to write the Craft book. It's pretty obvious that it didn't take the authors nearly that long to throw together the Party book. If you are specifically looking for ideas for use at a party you might find this book useful. If you are looking for ways to entertain elementary school children for an afternoon or several weeks, purchase the Wizard Craft book.

For most parties there are a range of options that fit a variety of price ranges. You could splurge on a high cost favor idea and save on a less expensive invitation idea. Each party suggests an age range for which it is appropriate and most are for the upper end, say 7-12.

From the first sight of this book, you know that you're in for quite a treat. The artwork on the cover - a painting - is exquisite, as most of White Wolf's artwork is. Even the way the title of the book is written lets you know it's gonna be good. Moving right along, then... This book goes into great detail on every type of party (used liberally in the book) you want in your story, from the Toreador's Ball to the Sabbat pack's Vaulderie. Unlike some people, I still think that it was wise to go into such detail. There are storytellers who would be happy to use any of the information found in the book, but there's always that Golden Rule. Have fun. If you don't like everything they've given you here, change some things. This book inspired ideas in my head about the social life of Kindred that I've not thought of before. It's a great read if you are interested in the social life of Kindred and Cainite alike and I suppose, if you're looking at this review, you are.
