Murder Mystery Books

I usd the advanced search option to find a highly rated book. After reading this book I have to assume that readers must have been paid or had some other motive to write a five star review. Compared to other mystery thrillers I have read, the writing was sophmoric and story unbelievable. This book was less than OK. Perhaps it was suspenseful so I read through to the end but had the sense I had wasted my time when I was through. I hope others are not tempted to purchase as I was. I have learned to stick to relying on friends recommendations and/or search for national book award winners/finalists when I am searching for a good read.

I can only say I was able to read up to page 24 (and since it began on page 7) that's not saying much. Before writing this review, I went online with the publishing company of the above title and discovered it's one of those companies that individuals pay to publish their so-called books. So that explained to me the total lack of editing and this is one author who really needed a great editor....one who can correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure etc etc etc....

Maybe I'm too fussy, but I love the English language and it doesn't always need to be correct, but it should be readable. When I got to the word "cry's", I nearly lost it.

So perhaps this is a 5 star book somewhere along the way and I will [happily] say I couldn't get into it....maybe there was a great plot hidden somewhere between the covers, but honestly, who cares? I will, however, tell this author that I think if she's brave enough to attempt another book, to take some courses in writing and English Lit.

On the back cover, it states that Nadine has been an avid reader since childhood....I'm frightened to think of the books she's read and can only
advise that she find herself an editor who can help her.

I really enjoyed this book. The author's creative thinking really shined through, and characters were so compelling that I almost fell madly in love with them. I actually developed a crush on the character John, he's so sexy.

Although the editing was poor, I do not blame author, but rather the small press that published this. I like to emphasize that I never met Ms. Monyer nor am I one of her entourage. I wish her the best in all her future writing endeavors and hopefully she'll have more sexy hunks.

I will surely be on the look out for her next release. I love mysteries, and this particular mystery was well worth it's weight in gold. Hat's off to you Ms. Monyer, best of luck.

I rented this book on CD and thought, how could I go wrong with Nora Roberts. I found this book to be slow and I really did not care about the characters. The language bothered me and Eve Dallas just did not come across well in this book. I did not find this book interesting and for an 8 hour drive I fought to finish it. Nora is too good for this kind of writing. Read her Irish trilogy a much better choice.

Once again Eve tracks down the sadistic bad guy. Ms Robb has a superior talent. I am glad she decided to share this talent with the rest of the world. I hope she continues in this matter.

As ever with the Death series JD Robb rocks. All the favorites character are here and continues to draw you into their lives. You feel invested and entwined in their lives as Eve & Company continue solving crimes and making you care.

Another winning book in the "...IN DEATH" series, this one finds Eve fighting for justice for the lower class citizens of New York.

After finding a street sleeper dead in his crib, his heart surgically removed, it doesn't take Eve long to figure out that there's some type of conspiracy involved within the medical community. When the threats become personal and Eve is forced to hand over her weapon and her badge, her personal life takes a turn for the worse.

This is a very emotional Eve & Roarke read, and highly recommended!

If you love the "in death" series, you will love this book as well. You even get an opportunity to see Dr. Mira, Feeney, McNab, Peabody, Baxter, Webster (old lover of Eve's), and Commander Whitney. And I finally find out how Trueheart and Dr. Louise's characters are introduced into the "in death" series. [I must admit that I have not read the series in order, so finding out these things is always helpful]. I highly recommend this book.

Joanne T. Lewis continues to keep the reader "hooked" with this smoothly written story of intrigue.

"It Whispers" is a page-turner from the first line to the last. Of course, I can only speak to the excerpt we have at the moment but I can't wait for the rest! Starting from childhood, I have been an avid reader but lately, I have been very disappointed with the quality of the books on the market. I'm happy to report that reading "It Whispers" has made the wait worthwhile. Ms. Lewis's character development is deft and,not unlike Remy, she is able to paint a picture with one broad stroke and provide a full-fleshed character. Remy's flamboyant father and her menacing sleazy uncle are big as life, as is Remy herself, who is a complex and sympathetic character.

The story's many conflicts and unanswered questions leave the reader hungry to know more. Where is Remy's brother? Is he safe? Will Remy break away from her father's hold on her? Will she represent the girl accused of patricide? I'm eager to find out! Please may I have some more?

Joanne T. Lewis spins memorable characters in her Amazon Short, IT WHISPERS from the first page when we are introduced to Remy and her showboat of a father, Clarence. The conflict between Remy and Clarence provides a strong, believable psychological story foundation that drives the main character's action.

The interweaving of several story lines from Remy's act of defiance in even suggesting to her wealth-mongering father that they take on a pro bono case for the young Bonita accused of murdering her father to Remy's suspicion of her Uncle Todd to the longing of a daughter abandoned by her mother through death to the promise of more colorful characters lumbering through the courthouse doors all guarantee IT WHISPERS will keep the reader intrigued and turning page after page.

Ms. Lewis has a knack for penning descriptions that are expansive, while succinct and often bordering on pure poetry. IT WHISPERS delivers a glimpse into the underbelly of the legal profession. I want to order this book from Amazon and hold it in my hands today! Joanne T. Lewis deserves to be named the breakthrough author in the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense category.

Having read a significant number of the ABNA entries, enough to sample the generally high quality of writing from young authors brave enough to place an excerpt before the reading public for comment, this reader is more than a little impressed with Joanne T. Lewis' IT WHISPERS. She has a mature writing style (surely she has some experience in the field before this excerpt!), the ability capture the reader's attention with the first sentence, and the concomitant assurance that every character introduced will be developed securely and with a great deal of originality.

Remy Woods is an artist and an attorney in her father's law firm, a Firm that caters to the wealthy and influential of the South Florida region, defending clients who probably should be convicted of a fairly wide spreadsheet of crimes. Remy would far prefer pursuing her painting career, but she is a gifted lawyer and her father's recognition of her talent and resultant demands on her time force her to practice law. She has a brother named Carlos who is barely introduced in this short section, but promises to be a fascinating kink in the lives of his family members. And towards the end of this fast-moving and far too short excerpt Remy uncaps the fizzing case that seems as though it will prove both her mettle as a lawyer and as a humanist.

Lewis is able to establish the tense atmosphere of a courtroom as well as she is defines sharply defines the peculiar characteristics of her characters not only by physical description and conversational manner but also by odors of body and clothing. There is little doubt of her physical setting in the dank and humid Broward County, a descriptive technique she extends to the behavior patterns of the characters that populate this engrossing story. She leaves the reader hungry for more and doubtless she will find a solid career in the art of literature. Grady Harp, February 08

I'm only halfway through the book but I can already give it 5 stars. It's not really a tale where the ending matters, but more like a narrative of the day to day grind of being a homicide detective. The book has ruined my ability to watch Law and Order and similar shows as watching a show where murders are solved (seemingly one at a time) in a one hour show week after week seems silly now. David Simon is a great writer. I am also a big fan of "The Wire" television show.

I had seen the the Homicide: Life on the Streets TV series before. Also was a big fan of David Simon's "The Wire".

This is an excellent book and I am looking forward to reading his other book, The Corner.

Homicide is one of the better of the crime reporting novels I have read. Simon was definitely at the top of his game.

He manages to write the book with more of a novel feel then a biography of the people involved. Other similar books, such as 'Homicide Special' try for the same thing, but you still feel the writer in their presence. Simon makes the reader feel as if they are there without feeling that the writer is intruding on anything.

The cases the officers work on are all interesting, and not all are slam dunks or even solvable. Many authors would feel a need to make their book have cases with endings. I applaud Simon for not giving in to that temptation.

Baltimore definitely plays a role in this book, and you get a real feeling for the city. You can see in this book the seed that would eventually sprout the series 'Homicide'.

If you are interested in detective work this is an excellent read. I highly recommend this book.

great book - heard David Simon on NPR and he knows the streets of BMore

I read this book after watching - several times over - David Simon's most recent work, The Wire. I have always been interested in detectives and was drawn by this book because it is non-fiction. As well as being a highly enjoyable read, I would say there were three main takeaways. First, the detailed first-hand account of actual cases and methods of investigation (including related disciplines such as interrogation, medical examination, ballistics, trace evidence, etc. as well as the legal processes and challenges that lead to conviction) have made me much more familiar with the actual process of solving murders. Second, a basic understanding of the structure and organization of a homicide unit within the police department and how the system is incentivized to solve crimes. Third, an appreciation of how these detectives - through late-night drinking sessions and office humor - manage to make their lives livable when they are not dealing with the darker side of their profession. Simon's first book is really special, I look forward to reading it again someday.

I'm really impressed by this book and can't wait to read the next one from Ms. Wilcox. The first chapter will get you hooked and it will not let you up for a minute. The last 100 pages were great! The pacing was great and there was little dragging in this book. I also love that there were no unnecessary profanities, no unnecessary sex, and no bloody description of violence. I thought I figure it out several times only to be wrong. It's one of the cleverest mysteries I have ever read and highly recommended to anybody! Two big thumbs up!

This book provided me with hours of enjoyment. Great character development and plot. I enjoyed it through the last page. I'm looking forward to Ms. Wilcox's next book.

I was absorbed by this thriller. Working in a corporate industry, I can relate to the characters, the events, the corporate environment and places. Not only that it will keep you guessing, it is informative, entertaining, and it has a moral value. In the end you're sorry to say goodbye to the characters. Romina Wilcox is as good as today's suspense writers. I hope she is busy writing the next one.

From the very first chapter Romina will have you guessing what's around the next corner. Lots of action, lots of technology, what more could you ask for. Oh a plot, its a good one.

I am by no means a professional writer, I just love to read. I got "Cold Eyes" a while ago and was finally able to read it. I read the book in one sitting because I simply could not put it down. Romina Wilcox has a way of taking you on a journey. It starts off slow and easy then goes all twisty-turney on you. The plot twists were wicked and fun and I enjoyed the novel very much. I found myself saying this person did it then something happened and my mind was changed. That happened a lot in this novel. I would recommend this novel to anyone wanting a good read. Keep up the great work Romina and I'd read anything you would write.

Claudia Mair Burney did the dogone thing! Amanda Bell Brown is a sassy and clever heroine. Sizzling dialogue, authentic description, and ever mounting conflict made it top notch reading. I couldn't stop laughing at the humor, was moved by the underlying spiritual message and was simply delighted to find a really well written novel.

I got the best of both worlds with this book. I'm always trapped in an episode of CSI:Miami, Law and Order or somewhere with my nose in a good Christian Fictian romance. How did Claudia Burney know just how to put it together? I felt like I was spying on Bell's life. I was totally immersed in the crime scene, in the flirt scenes in the scary situational scenes. I used EVERY spare moment to read this book and I'm thrilled that there is another one in the series.

Wow! I loved these characters. Belle is a real AAP (African American Princess). She and Jazzy have real issues, but a real respect and admiration for each other. I love the angle of the ex-boyfriend who is her Pastor. It works for me.

I don't read a lot of chick lits or murder mysteries, so to read a book with both rolled up together was an anomally. But let me tell you, reader, this book captivated me. Bell's (main character) wit had me laughing out loud.

I don't know. Maybe it's not chick lit. It has the sass of chick lit, but not really the concerns of chick lit. To be honest, the whole chick lit category confuses me once you get out of the shopping and heels stuff.

In between the laughs, Burney dealt with hard issues such as divorce and remarriage, life in the occult (and healing after getting out), interdenominational relations, and a single person's honest-to-goodness struggles with lust for the person to whom they are attracted. Yes, people, that's normal, and I love that Burney didn't shy away from that. And can I say this? While reading this book, I was an African-American woman. And you know what? I loved it. (Being African-American and the book.) In fact, I loved it so much, that I've decided to make it the June giveaway for Glimpses (my ezine).

Amanda Bell Brown is a forensic psychologist that is in dire need of some fun and excitement. Amanda is all set to spend another birthday alone until her sister drags her out to a birthday dinner. Amanda's world is sent into a tailspin when she suddenly ends up at the scene of a murder. She thinks she knows who the killer is, and she's trying to do everything possible to solve this case. Things become a little more interesting when the lead detective of the case named Jazz asks her out. But as Amanda becomes more involved in the case, the more dangerous it becomes. Will Amanda be able to solve this crime without becoming a victim herself?

Murder, Mayhem, and a Fine Man is a riveting mystery from Claudia Mair Burney. Mair Burney expertly created an intriguing mystery with colorful cast of characters. This storyline pulls readers in deep into the twisted world of the cult and how it can be detrimental to its members. You will feel the heart-stopping drama as Amanda gets closer to solving this disturbing case. You also feel the romantic sparks between Amanda and Jazz. Mair Burney does an excellent job of illustrating the inner religious conflicts of Amanda and Jazz as they become closer to each other. There is also a good dose of humor that makes this novel all the more enjoyable. Murder, Mayhem, and a Fine Man is a suspenseful page-turner that is the perfect start to the Amanda Bell Brown mystery series.

Being an Elvis fan, the title caught my eye. Realizing it was a series I began with the first book - Murder on a Bad Hair Day. Yes, these are humorous mysteries. I'm reading at work in the breakroom and I just laugh out loud. Ms. George is funny, she creates a storyline and a plotline and her Alabama sisters are far from amateur sleuthes, they are just two retirees who are at the wrong place at the wrong time and making the most of it as they invite the police in for coffee and orange rolls. Sadly, it stops with this book as Ms. George, a retired schoolteacher has passed on. But I am eternally grateful to have joined her and "Vulcan" for the great ride, stepping over the dead bodies they happen upon.

This final book in the Southern Sisters mysteries was a delightful book as they all were. Bitter sweet in the reading as I continued to enjoy the antics of Mouse and Sister, all the while knowing there would be no more. The 8 book series was a delightful read and I so enjoyed sitting down to romp through the Birmingham area with an unlikely pair of sleuths. I will forever wonder what happens to them all and what other troubles the two sisters could have worked their way through Had Ms George continued with us. She and her delightful characters will be missed.

I love Anne George. Too bad she didn't write more of these before she died. I truly enjoyed reading this book to the very end. In the back of the book it states that she is an award winning writer and poet. I suggest reading them all - they really are entertaining, especially if you are a senior!

If you like a mystery book that is light and does not go into gory details then Anne George is for you! I read all types of mystery stories but have enjoyed the Souther Sisters Mysteries emensely. It is a shame that Ms. George passed away in 2001.

I cannot go to my grave without sharing the delight I have found in Anne George's books about Murder...., starring the two sisters. I am happy to say that they bear a great resemblance to my sister and I! I have laughed so hard that, yes, I really did wet my pants. But that's not hard to do these days ( I am 64 and obviously not Southern 'cause I just told you my age!). Anyway, I have read ALL of the books. I know because I searched so hard for more that I found out Anne George had DIED! 'Course I was sorry - I mean, real sorry - because by that time, I had gotten addicted to those I have come to consider my true blood sisters! I am so sorry I didn't discover her books before her untimely demise. Maybe I could have convinced her that she owed it to her public to write some more. Anyway, you have a treat in store for you if you like to laugh like I do. Best readings from my house to yours! PRH

The book was used, but in very good shape. I bought it for my ex-mother inlaw, I didn't tell her it was a used book and she never knew otherwise. :)

In this book, a brilliant and sadistic serial killer is targeting Irish immigrants in New York. His methods are sickeningly brutal, and each death is different. With the very first death the killer draws Eve into the mix, calling her to boast about the murder and to give her a riddle to lead her to it.

Evidence points straight to Summerset, Roarke's devoted 'servant' and friend and the bane of Eve's domestic existence. While it quickly becomes obvious he's being set up, proving that in an official capacity is another matter.

While there's a familiar theme here of Eve's cases bringing her into conflict with and causing her to investigate the very people she cares about, it's carried off far better in this volume than in some of the others. Summerset's reasons for distrusting police are extremely well-founded and far too deep-set for him to shake off. The reasons why Eve can figure out that he's innocent but can't easily keep him out of jail are clever and believable.

A new and highly entertaining series character puts in an appearance (McNab, a flamboyant electronics expert with the police force). Eve and Summerset are forced to stretch (and break) their veneer of civility. And Eve and Roarke have to face, and embrace, more of his past than she's even been aware of up until now. There are no easy answers, and their only chance lies in being able to manipulate and outwit a killer who believes he's the instrument of God's vengeance.

The character development is beautiful, the pacing and tension are gripping, and the mystery is fascinating. I highly recommend this volume of Robb/Roberts's in death series.

The J D Robb series has me hooked. I was very happy that Amazon has back copies on had at a reasonable price.

I love this series... you must read it to understand. It's all about a homicide detective named Lt. Eve Dallas and how she goes about solving a case which always seems imposibble to solve at first.

This book is well written. I do not enjoy reviews that give too much of the storyline away, suffice I should say this book does not let me down from the previous Lieutenant Eve Dallas series. However, it will stand-alone, you do not have to read any other book in this series to know what is going on with it. I would not spoil it for you if I were to tell you that the murders start off extremely grisly and get very personal to the investigator. You gotta' love this book because, Lt. Eve will not stop until the killer is found. The suspense kept me going till the end.

While this is Mark Stevens' first novel, you'd never know it. Stevens exhibits a mastery of storytelling and a thorough knowledge of the Colorado Rockies where the story is set.

Allison Coil, recovering from the trauma of surviving a commerical airline crash, leaves her fast-paced world and finds herself working as a hunting guide on horseback in the Eagle-Vail area. A blinding snowstorm doesn't stop animal rights activists from camping out and protesting, and Allison also forges her way home from a camp when a shot rings out. She sees something suspicious in the distance, but can't be sure of what it means. However, it soon becomes clear that a protestor and another hunting guide are both missing. While risking her life and facing real threats, she acts on instinct and slowly begins to unravel the mysteries to find the truth.

A plot filled with twists and nasty, greedy characters keep the suspense at a high level and are nicely interwoven in an easy style with good character development and a terrific setting. Mark Stevens as an author to watch - a great read!

Superb! Mark Stevens develops a group of interesting characters and thrusts them into a compelling story set in the fascinating world of guided Elk hunts (about which I previously knew nothing, but which I enjoyed learning about). For me, the book was a real page-turner in two respects: I eagerly turned the pages forward as I became engrossed in the story, and I found myself turning them backward to re-read Stevens' moving descriptions of the mountains and the ever-changing Colorado weather. This book would be particularly absorbing if read while traveling on an airplane (for reasons related to the plot that I will not divulge here), or if read within sight of the spectacular terrain that Stevens describes so well.

I went on a guided trip into the flat tops last summer. Wish I would have had the book with me. It would have made the trip that much more enjoyable. I liked Allison the main character. Her strength and charater were easy to imagine in that setting. The book is a real page turner. As a hunter and lover of mysteries, I found this book to be enjoyable on many levels. It is a must read for anyone that loves outfitting and guided hunts.

Mark Stevens brings a new voice to fiction wtih Antler Dust. Allison Coil was believable and tough even with all the high country mayhem.

Hooray for Mark Stevens in setting an evocative, fast paced, groundbreaking crime-adventure story in the gorgeous and storied Flattops of Colorado. The country breathes and lives in this new novel--you can smell the fir trees and hear the strange echoes of hoof on stone in the high country bowls. Stevens knows this country by heart and he takes you there with expertly crafted prose. Groundbreaking because the heroine is a hunting guide--a female hunting guide in a world of tough--and in this case--often ruthless men. The characters are great. They speak as they were born to speak and the reader gets sucked right into this high country drama. I welcome this brave new practitioner for making this crack-the-case story fresh and fun and gripping. Bravo.

One of the most engaging aspects of M.J. Rose's writing is that she gives the reader an "insider's look" into a possibly unfamiliar venue. "Flesh tones" is set in the art world, and both the process of painting and the business end were depicted in an interesting and convincing way. The characters were attractive and made you care about them.

M.J. Rose knows writing! I finished Flesh Tones last night and have to say how much I admire her work. Her characters and the situation are finestkind, but I am most impressed with the way she tells the tale. What superb timing, and how nicely she spins a chapter strand into transition. With a tease here and a glimpse there, M.J. Rose gives us just enough to move the story along, like oars move a shell over the water: allowing us to glide between strokes, never losing momentum, accelerating smoothly to a stunning finish.

What is the dividing line between deep love and obsession? Who should be allowed to judge when a relationship crosses from one to the other?

Genny Haviland met artist Slade Gabriel in her father's gallery when she was 17. I have learned that if a book doesn't grab you within the first 50 pages or so to foget about it and move onto something else. This book had me hooked within the first 20 pages. This book does a wonderful job at exploring that very fine line between love and obsession at times I felt like I was reading Genny's personal diary, but this book is much more than a smutty beach read. Did Genny Haviland kill her lover or did she save him from a terrible disease that would rob him of everything he knows and holds dear? M.J. Rose's writing style is efortless and smooth. Half the story is told in the present tense during the murder trial and half the story is told through the use of flashbacks, which normally can be hard for the reader to follow, but in this instance they are used to define very important elements in the story. Ms. Rose's writing style is masterful, the reader becomes totally absorbed in the tapestry of the story, there are passages that read like poetry that force the reader to go back and read them again. It was impossible for me not to turn the pages, I was transfixed and I will definetly be on the lookout for more by M.J. Rose!!

MJ Rose paints a portrait of an amazing bond between a man and woman. Genny and Slade, both products of the art world, meet when she is far too young to fall in love with him, or to share his passion. She misrepresents her age and background to be with him, and Rose skips forward, after laying the foundation, to Genny's immeasureable sacrifice for the man she loves. Rose is equally at home writing about art, death, the courtroom and the bedroom. She's one author I'll not soon forget!
