The 'smart question' to ask is "Why am I looking at these types of books?" If the answer is to improve your ability to get more out of your meetings, interviews, negotiations, and communications with everyone at any level (internal and external to your organization), this is the book to buy by far. I've read many self-help communications books and this one really gets to the heart of the matter -- ask and you shall receive; ask the right question(s) and you'll get what you want/deserve. It was an easy and enjoyable read that gets you engaged from the first chapter (unlike so many other books that take 5 chapters to explain what they're to accomplish). The quizzes really provide helpful and immediate feedback. You can read from cover to cover or use as a reference. Either way, this book gives you tools to use right away. You'll carry this one around with you until you've mastered the technique.

You won't be disappointed (as I have with so many other books of this kind). This one is a winner, hands down!

Positively Implementing Change

This book is helpful in learning to frame questions that help to effect positive change. Most people are more willing to accept answers that they discover for themselves. And of course, no one will make any real change unless they want to. The best you can get with force is outward conformity, and you will only get it to the degree that employees feel they "must" go along with. It takes a lot less energy to help people find their own internal motivation than it does to push or drag them along.

As a professional personal coach who works one-on-one to help others reach greater success, I really appreciate the approach of this book. "Smart Questions" is for anyone who doesn't realize that good coaching isn't about advising. This book shows you why asking the right question is much more powerful than giving an answer or advice, especially advice that someone isn't necessarily looking for. The essence of great coaching is all about asking smart questions. The best answers almost always come from whomever you're helping, not you.

This book is an amazing book and essential for firefighters, as well as enthusiasts or people who just wants to learn something. From start to finish, this book is packed full of facts, based on the history of FDNY and exploring the truth behind the brotherhood involved in the fire house. I have yet to place this book aside, it is an utmost favorite of mine.

If you like the FDNY, if you want to know its History, this is the book!

This book from start to finish is packed with information that you would otherwise never have heard about. The history of one of the most famous Fire Depts in the US is more than I ever imagined, naming some of the early firefighters who would have otherwise slipped into the sandglass of time. The accounts of fires and incidents in the citys history do more credit than you will ever hear about anywhere else. It shows why today Firefighters of the modern day FDNY fight so hard to keep hold of their history and tradition. Before you make judgement on these guys read this book. This is what they are all about.

In these post-9/11 days there have been a number of histories of the FDNY written, but this one is my favorite. It reads like a novel, yet is packed with solid history. And while clearly an admirer of the Fire Department, the author does not get overly sentimental, which is quite easy to do.

For someone who loves New York City and has an admiration for firefighters, this book would be a valuable addition to any library. While providing a fascinating account of the history of the FDNY, the book also gives the reader a wealth of information about the city itself. I would recommend it for firefighters, fire buffs, and any reader who is interested in a fascinating account of the Fire Department of the City of New York and the incredible men and women who have joined its ranks over the years.

Loved it! Been looking for something like it ever since. I recommend it to my "reader" friends often. As a New York City history buff I found it to be readable and enlightening. And as a fire buff, since 9/11 I can't get enough of this stuff, I found it to be well-researched and thorough. I knew what I was getting into when I read the jacket. Golway's firefighting roots make him a fan of The Bravest but I didn't mind the sentimentality because that's partially why I picked the book in the first place. A fitting tribute to working class heroes of the past 300+ years.

I'm a mom of new twins and bought two "survival guides." This one, for being a new stay at home mom and another one about being a new mom. The new mom guide, which is by a doctor, wasn't as useful as I'd hoped. (I bought it for the advice about regaining my body, but she doesn't really address what happened to my body due to twins.) But I'm really enjoying this book, which I'm reading a bit here and there since I don't have much time to do anything anymore. Melissa, the author, had twins (like me) and left a good job to be home with kids (also like me). I can totally relate to what she and the other moms in this book are saying, but I'm also finding her friendly writing reassuring about how hard it is to be by myself with babies and how everything in my life changed big time so fast. I'd recommend this book for any new stay at home mom who is feeling a bit alone and lost.

A "must have" book for any Stay-At-Home Mom.

I highly recommend this book for all Stay-At-Home moms and for any soon-to-be Stay-At-Home moms. Kudos to Melissa Stanton for such a well-thought out and well-written guide.

This book is refreshing in its honesty! Finally a REAL perspective on what it's like to be at home, with kids, all day, every day...and not loving it all day, every day. I found the book totally validating - I felt like the author had a window into my actual life. It's crystal clear that Melissa Stanton has walked the walk, and her perspective will make so many of us SAHMs feel supported and understood. I keep this book right next to my well-referenced collection of parenting books by the Sears and Brazeltons out there, but the difference is that THIS author has truly lived what I am living today. I am grateful to be a SAHM for my kids, but it certainly isn't a fairytale, and Melissa Stanton GETS IT. The good days are SO GOOD, and on the not-so-good days, I can pull out this book and remember that I am not alone. Finally, I feel connected, understood and supported. Thank you, Melissa, for being totally unapologetic and unflinching in your book - it's honest and real.

This is a fabulous must-read for all stay at home moms. You will relate with all of Melissa's joy and frustration simultaneously. While reading the book there were many moments where I felt understood for the ability to stay at home and parent my children as well as have a brain and think for myself. It is the toughest job that anyone could do and yet many women do it everyday without complaint. How does anybody do it? Melissa shows that it is alright to feel exhausted, complain, scream, cry and that you don't have to be perfect.

I love this book! I just got it and am still reading through it but I really love the way Stanton writes. Very natural, candid, anecdotal and entertaining yet getting some wonderful points across that will help so many of us moms cope with the day to day challenges and joys of parenting. I found myself nodding my head in agreement at so many of the observations she shares. This is a real world book for real world moms. I am going to bring this with me on vacation to share with my girlfriends who are fellow moms- lots of great conversation starters and wonderful coping strategies we can all use.

After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.

James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."

His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.

This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.

"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.

I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.

The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.

Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.

To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.

For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.

The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.

With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.

Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.

I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.

As a person who sells complicated, expensive technical solutions to IT executives, I have to constantly be on guard of buyers using negotiation tactics to drive my price down. A colleague attended one of Patrick Henry's trainings and recommended this book to me. I had no idea buyers had such an arsenal of tactics to use against sales people. When I read the section on buyer-negotiator tactics, I immediately recognized close to a dozen tactics that, prior to reading this book, I didn't even know were being used on me! It was depressing until I read the chapter on how to counteract and neutralize buyer ploys and tactics to gain discounts. I had no idea sales people had so much power. In fact, if I had to narrow this book down to one sentence that would be it: Sellers have enormous negotiation power! But, unless they read this book, they won't know how to recognize it or, more importantly, exercise it. At least I didn't.

This is an incredible book. And least I forget, the history is incredible as well. In fact, up until I read this book, I hated history. But he kept them brief and to the point. I actually found myself rereading some of the historical stories.

Wow!

Wow, what an interesting way to look at negotiation. The use of history to explain this concept is intriguing. It made this subject more interesting and more real. If we don't learn from the past, we are bound to repeat it. In this book, I found captivating & entertaining historical examples of negotiations that apply directly to modern-day sales situations. Using these easy, yet sometimes counter-intuitive concepts, I have learned how to balance power with my clients. From the first conversation to the contract, this book explains the art of win-win selling. I had no idea how much POWER I have. I have read many books on negotiations over that last 20 years and I have simply found things in this book that I have not found in others.

"Mr. Hansen's knowledge of negotiation is incredible. As a salesperson who negotiates complicated contracts, I ordered this book hoping to pick up a few pointers. I was shocked at how little I actually knew about negotiation. I learned more in the first section of this book than any negotiation training I've taken. Seriously. I could not put this book down. His historical examples are not only entertaining, they illustrate his points. If you want to give your negotiation skills a major boost, I recommend this book."

I predict that in coming years, this book will become a classic in deer hunting, mentioned in the same sentence with Larry Koller's Shots at Whitetails, Theodore Van Dyke's The Still Hunter, and a very few others that have stood the test of time. If you want to be a better deer hunter, get Strategies for Whitetails soon, and study it before next deer season. Besides getting many tips from a master deer hunter and a healthy appreciation for America's greatest big game animal, the discussion of the five stages of a deer hunter will allow you to do some healthy self-analysis.

Strategies for Whitetails is truly a comprehensive book, and the author's love for the animal that has brought so much to his life comes through loud and clear. Excellent color photography, countless insights into the natural world, a low price for a high quality book... you'll be glad you bought it.

You could stumble into each class paying as much attention as possible, trying very hard to understand how to become a better teacher, reflecting after class upon what you did well and what you did not do well ... or you could read McKeachie's book and take all of his experience and that of his co-authors into your repertoire of teaching tips.

One could dread reading a book that talks too much about the details and administrative issues that may arise in teaching. One could also dread a book that speaks only about philosophical issues in teaching. One does not need to dread this book because it addresses both practical and philosophical matters but not in excruciating details. It is written by an intelligent group for intelligent readers and yet it is simple prose, not the pretentious academic jargon that I so often encounter.

I loved it and highly recommend it to all PhD students, junior faculty, and faculty teaching others how to teach.

On my instructional maiden voyage into the sea of communication, this text was my life vest. In 28 concise chapters, Wilbert McKeachie offers pearls of wisdom on everything from drafting a syllabus to dealing with excuses, and everything in between. His straightforward writing lends itself to quick reading and makes it a handy "flip-to" guide for refreshers.
Whether you're wrestling with a "discussion dominator" or trying to finesse responses from silent students, this book offers proactive approaches and solutions to unforeseen challenges.
Keeping things fresh and interesting for students and yourself makes the learning experience more enjoyable. Reading, attending workshops and talking to experienced faculty are some of the suggestions the author offers. As someone who used to teach natural resource seminars, I was pleased that he acknowledged the energizing power of an effective workshop. In addition, the text also offers tips on applying new changes learned in those courses to classes.
As any instructor worth their salt is aware, teaching is an ever-evolving process, that must be honed and refined to suit both instructor and student. For anyone adrift in some arena of college instruction, grabbing onto this 379 page text will prove a worthwhile undertaking.

This was one of the books I read in a "teaching college history" course I took at Indiana University. Prior to that I had taught two of my own courses and been an associate instructor for two more. I wish I had read this book prior to my teaching because it asks a lot of very good questions and gives suggestions that you can use in the classroom. The variety of courses that can be helped by such tips is endless -- even if you don't think your particular field could use a particular chapter or really has a particular issue I found reading it always helped me devise new strategies for teaching. This is not, however, a model of how to teach (could there ever be such a model?), you'll have to read and evaluate what may work for you for each particular class.

This text provides college faculty with strategies to become a better instructor and to deal with the challenges of the profession.

Creating objectives, test design, learner goals, lecture formats, teaching to a diverse audience, grading, handling suspected cheaters - you name it and it is in there.

I believe it will be beneficial to any college instructor regardless of size of school. I teach at a small school and the text, though maybe slanted a bit toward the experience at the large research university, was tremendously helpful to me.

The book is easy to read. I have incorporated a lot of the strategies into this fall semester.

Traditionally chess books are often grouped in the categories: opening, middle game and ending. Marovic's book "Understanding pawn play in chess" covers a very important topic in chess, which includes all the three phases of a game. It will help you little if you know the moves in the French opening, but you don't know how to handle the pawn chain from a French opening. Means how to attack the wedge and the base of the pawn chain. "Understanding pawn play in chess" will help you to do understand what to do with pawn chain. So if you want to extend your knowledge about pawn structures this is the book for you. The topics covered in this book are: isolated pawns, isolated pawn couples, hanging pawns, passed, doubled, backward, pawn chains and pawn islands.

One Minus with this book, is that the author and Gambitbooks could have used more diagrams for each game. You must always use the board when going through this book. With more diagrams describing the most interesting position for the pawn subject, the book would become more readable.

This book uses complete games to examine pawn structures--their strengths and weaknesses. Marovic uses a conversational tone to explain important points and keeps analysis to the minimum needed to illustrate the explanation. In separate chapters he examines isolated pawns, passed pawns, doubled pawns, backward pawns and pawn-chains.
Marovic uses games from throughout the history of chess to illustrate his material and does a great job. I would recommend this book for players rated (USCF) from Class B and up, although rapidly advancing lower rated players would also benefit from reading the book as well.
The only thing that could make it better would be a few more diagrams.

I personnaly own half a dosen books wrote in croatian from Drazen Marović, and they are excellent. Unfortunately, he doesnt publish in Croatia any more, so this is the only way to read his fresh stuff. Games of high quality in this book are anotated in a way which can help to improve your understanding, not just about pawn play, but about overall strategic issues in midgame, and correspondance between pawns and pieces. Recomended.

Heir to Soltis

Having read the classic manual Pawn Structure Chess by Soltis, I was very interested to see how this book would stack up. I learned a lot from Soltis, and I hoped to expand my understanding about how pawn structures affect plans and strategy. I was not disappointed. Marovic uses many, many complete game examples, but his annotations are so succinct and clear as to make the large number of games effortless to get through. One thing he does well which is VERY hard for most chess authors is present the model games in a sequence in which their respective lessons build upon one another to deeply reinforce the concepts he's trying (and succeeding) to instruct. The one caveat, if you want to call it that, is that I think this book will be most helpful for people with an intermediate knowledge of openings, as the pawn positions discussed tend to reoccur in specific openings with specific piece placements. However, this shouldn't be a problem as I believe the intended audience is above 1600 USCF anyway, and should thus know the difference between a QGA and a QGD.

Pawn Structure/Planning your Backbone of the game

Often overlooked is the importance of preparing long term planning for not just the endgame, but the use of pawn chains, and even what is considered a weakness, doubled pawns being used as a "battering ram!" and opening a file. These are very important aspects of chess and what has been called the "backbone" of chess is often forgotten in light of only tactics. True, tactics books, trap books and opening books have a very important place and all should be studied. But the "use of pawns" should not just be a chapter in a book, it should be a couple volumes of books! If you are a beginner, even an lower end intermediate player you will get more results in studying tactic and chess traps. But Once you reach a solid intermediate level then you should start thinking more about the finer points of play. Now, I like the overall approach of "Understanding Pawn Play in Chess" but I think a few words (to say the least) were lost in the translation (it seems clear to me that the author's first language was not english), which is why, though I feel this is a good book, some of the important ideas were lost the the translation, and can be a little confusing. Solitis's "Pawn Structure Chess" is a good alternative. I also like going over complete game books such as, "Understanding Chess" and "Unbeatable Chess Lessons and More Unbeaable Chess Lessons" as ways to gain an understanding of all aspects of the game, including the critical use of pawns.

My nutritionist recommended that I get this journal after he'd used it with several teenage clients. I've been writing down my daily food for almost a year and had gotten very tired of it--but using this journal has actually created a renewed sense of purpose for me. I absolutely adore the focus on the positive in this journal, which gives me a much better attitude overall. I also like that your hunger is rated on a three-step scale, so you really have to face eating when you're just not hungry. The summary for each week is great and there's a strong focus on setting your own goals and working to meet them. I highly recommend this journal for all, regardless of age! As an aside, the orange part featured in the photo of the book is actually a paper wrap that slips right off, leaving only the starburst design and a small title that reads, "WLC Journal." That makes this very discreet and comfortable to carry around without proclaiming that you're on a diet or writing down your food.

What I find so amazing about this companion guide to Weight Loss Confidential is that it is truly a complete and self-contained program that provides teens the essential tools to manage their weight - once and for all!

Fletcher drives home the point that for teens to manage their weight successfully, they must adopt a plan that is individualized and right for them - no more 'cookie-cutter' programs! But she also reinforces that regardless of the approach, the bones of any successful program still involves a life-long commitment to healthy food choices coupled with a do-able physical activity program that teens can live with.

The real jewel in Weight Loss Confidential Journal is not only do teens benefit from the wisdom of an expert nutritionist who has "been there" with her own son's weight battles, but they also benefit from the in-the-trenches wisdom of their peers. Cap it all off with some awesome, simple and teen-focused recipes and meal plans, Weight Loss Confidential Journal provides a recipe for success that teens and their parents cane really sink their teeth into! Bravo, Anne Fletcher...Bravo!

The Weight Loss Confidential Journal is a terrific companion to the Anne's book Weight Loss Confidential. The book and journal are focused on helping teens develop and sustain healthy nutritional and activity habits. The best part is that in addition to being scientifically sound, Anne interviewed other teens who had lost weight and kept it off. Which is such a great approach!! The Journal is broken up into 23 weeks with a topic for each week, as well as, a place to write goals and track exercise & food intake. Each week also has excellent tips from other teens that are very motivational and interesting. I would highly recommend this Journal to be used in conjuction with the book!

Weight Loss Confidential Journal: Week by Week Success Strategies for Teens from Teens

Review Date: 2008-01-08
Weight Loss Confidential Journal is unique in that it features advice for truly overweight teenagers, not those seeking to lose five or ten pounds. Neither patronizing nor preachy, the advice provided is provided from teens who have maintained significant weight losses.
The book features 23 weeks' worth of advice. Each week, the focus is on a different aspect of controlling one's weight. The themes "Recover from your slip-ups", "Make peace with your body", and "Get rid of diet thinking" emphasize the mind-body connection of the total person.
Weight Loss Confidential Journal also provides space for a daily 23-week diary. Besides recording food and beverage intake and time spent exercising, participants are asked to record their feelings, moods, and random thoughts, and are encouraged to jot down the day's successes. At the end of the week, users can list things that were helpful, evaluate whether their goals were met, and set new goals. Readers are also asked to list how their lives are better, and why they want to achieve a healthier weight. Reviewing the week helps readers to see their progress. Interestingly, the space designated to record weight is a small one; this shifts the focus from being solely on weight to encompassing larger goals and seeing the big picture.
Planning and realistic goal-setting are stressed. Users can plan their responses to obstacles, such as a class trip, that might interfere with progress.
Written by a registered dietitian, this book takes a moderate and balanced approach to nutrition. It focuses on eating healthful, appropriate amounts for all food groups, and includes portion sizes for foods and beverages, guidlines for food plans, and healthy recipes for teen favorites such as pizza and sandwiches.
Overall, this is an excellent book. It presents an individual, realistic approach to weight management in a user-friendly format.

Grab a cold Guinness and settle in for a comfortable Irish ride. Through the chatty and often humorous banter of these two likeable chaps, author Conor Cunneen reveals the solid business truths of very successful international corporations. The pub humor and anecdotal stories are good-natured and the use of contemporary examples makes this book appealing to a wide audience. The title points to the first business lesson: "know your strengths and know which markets to attack". Applied, the ten lessons will provide any business with a solid foundation.

Conor has successfully boiled down all of the important marketing principles and written them into an easy to read story involving two Irish cousins, a gourmet food company, an airline and Lyndon B. Johnson. How all of these seemingly unrelated topics link is the fun of the book. Read it and enjoy. But to really enjoy the story, read it with a pint of Guinness in your mitt.

Like Guinness, this book is both filling and tastes great!

Why America Never Invaded America is a blast to read. It is PG-13 only because the author uses LBJ as an example, a good example at that. This is a book that really should be read by any Entrepreneur or young person working in business wanting an idea of the big picture.

The book is easily read and flows so quickly with great examples, humor and wit you could find yourself up to the wee hours reading. Actually, I found me self talking with an Irish Brogue by the time I finished it.

In my management coaching I not only suggest reading Why America Never Invaded America I require it. Pick up a copy and give yourself a treat. Reading management or business books are seldom both enjoyable and valuable. Why America Never Invaded America is.

Having gifted several copies, we agree...Ireland may never
have actually invaded America, but how grateful we are that Conor has!
