might be the only bridge book you'll need

This is the meatiest bridge book I've ever seen. It is densely packed with solid information on every page, on all aspects of the game, and almost none of it for the beginner. I am nowhere near expert so I don't know how much of it will be "old hat" to them, but it's perfect for anyone wanting to leave the novice category and willing to spend a lot of time to do it. The book is divided into 12 sections by several different authors--6 on bidding, 3 on declarer play, and 3 on defense.

Section 12 (deceptive play by defenders) is almost worth the price of the book by itself. It feels like a tiny sliver of pages at the back, but the scope and variety of the ideas are stunning. You can spend half an hour getting to the bottom of a couple paragraphs.

The bidding sections require you to like 4-card majors, but aside from that they take a thorough look at ACOL from all angles, covering the thought processes behind "ordinary" bidding as well as numerous conventions. And the multiple authors frequently disagree with each other, allowing you to assess the merits of a particular method and tailor your bidding system. The section on slam bidding will even make you laugh a few times.

The drawback of this book is the hideous amount of typos, probably as many as one per page. The typos come in all shapes and sizes, and frequently inhibit properly understanding the material. I remember being puzzled over a player making a 2-level overcall on Kxxxx before I realized that an ace was missing.

Beautiful Book, Classy Projects; Good Gift

This book is a great coffee-table book and a great craft book. It makes Traditional American Folk Art look classy and fun.
The historical sections which introduce each craft provide just enough information to be interesting but never pedantic. (The author also takes a quote from old books, stories, etc., to introduce each craft -- such as quilting or carving, etc., which gives each section a good context.)
I made two projects from the book (silhouettes -- it takes some practice but is otherwise simple! and a floorcloth) and and had good results, so, the instructions WORK.
I think this could also be a nice mother-in-law or grandmother gift - if you have time to listen to her stories about the old days!

As my title states the answers for Capcom's Fighting Evolution are all in the startegy guide for Capcom's Fighting Evolution, makes sense right? In this guide you will find the basics of the game, like what Normal moves, Special moves, Super Attacks, Throws, Blocking, Block Stun, Invincibility, and Reversals are and what they can be used for in diffrent situations. The it goes into the type of combos that can be done in this game like Link combos, Cancel combos, Jump in combos, Cross up combos, and Corner combos. The it goes in to positioning and descriptions of advanced tactis, which are Wake ups, Meaty attacks, Wake up games, Tick throw, Sacrafice throw, Empty jump, Poking, Overhead attacks, Footsies, Zoning, Mind games, and Juggle combos. This guide also explains the frame data for each move used by each character that appears in Capcom's Fighting Evolution and it also describes the diffrent gameplay systems appearing in this game. Like Street Fighter 3 and Red Earth they will have there advatages and weaknesses according to the original games they appeared in. This guide of course like every other guide will give the sercrets of the game away. Also there is an occasional typo or two. If you cant really figure the game out or you just like collecting, you should get this.

The recipes are wonderful. They have been passed on for years because they are superb and timeless. Most readers already will have at least one of them in their collection of favorites. They are ideal for bridge gatherings because of quick, uncomplicated preparation.

The presentation of play of each of the bridge hands is superb. The mini-lessons following each hand are excellent. The book is presented in such a manner that one can pick it up and digest information even in a brief period of time.

This book is not intended for the professional nor would it be useful for the beginner. It is valuable for everyone else.

The book is an ideal "bread and butter" gift for a bridge host (or hostess). We originally received a copy as a gift. Since then (five years ago), we have given at least five copies to bridge playing friends.

This book has been quite helpful to us - if you search the net for suppliers for papermaking, only 2 or 3 come up that sell anything more than expensive kits. This book explains the equipment, uses and then lists suppliers - worldwide. Unfortunately, no e-mails or web addresses. But you can get info even on archival supplies, fibres, workshops - an extensive range that you probably wouldn't have thought of yourself. Serious papermakers should get this book.

Otherworldly and broad source
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-30
First, the book was written primarily for Mage: the Awakening, and that's its primary target. However, any World of Darkness game can use part of it. It fits especially well with Second Sight and Changeling. The crossover information is far better written than in Tome of Mysteries. (Where a rather knee-jerk "they don't interact" sort of feel was prevalent.) The common planes of creatures other than human and the ways each interacts with these levels of being are described more fully.

The description of each area describes its function and how interaction with it affects the world. The dangers of each area are described in broad terms, and the point is made of how broad each area is. While this often is done in so vague a manner as to be useless, here it was written rather well. Multiple examples the various things described help give a good feel for the sorts of things encountered.

The book gives ideas and methods for interaction. The worst part was when describing the interaction in one plane to affect others, they failed to describe any examples of the connections between realms. They thoroughly describe the importance of such connections, but fail to describe how the manifest or are made/destroyed.

The new spells make the astral realms far more accessible than the base Mage did. I agree with the move, but some of the base book rote effects should be reviewed in light of the new spells. (The shift was intentional, and briefly discussed. To paraphrase: There is little reason to preclude mages from something that can lead to a good story when the point of the game is to create a story.)

I suggest that this is one of the most useful of the supplements that has been released. It describes an area worth encountering and learning from, and has many new dangers and snares to avoid. I found the book rich with ideas for stories.

If I were to recommend books for an aspiring Mage storyteller, the order would be: World of Darkness, Mage the Awakening, Astral Realms, Tome of Mysteries, Intruders: Encounters From the Abyss

Other books of value include: Book of Spirits, Legacies: The Ancient, Legacies: The Sublime, and the order books.
