This book is the best! The games and approach have worked very well with the Title One kids that I tutor, providing a fun way to work on skills. The author has an easy writing style that talks the reader through each activity, explaining variations and "what if's". She also provides information on the psychology of learning (such as, "What is a 6 year old's concept of number?") that is geared to the parent and a separate addendum that is geared to teachers.

The best book to help your child with math

My 1st grade daughter hates to study. She screams and rolls her eyes when I bring out the math workbook. Unfortunatly, I have to work with her beacause she's not doing well in math. After looking at a number of books on the subject, and not seeing much to my liking, I found this one. It's wonderful. You really can play these games with your child, help them with math, and they don't even know they're studying. This book (actually this whole series of books) would be great for any child. Those doing well in math will love these games, those doing poorly in math might actually enjoy math for the first time. I've started with a simple solitaire game to help my daughter with addition. This one takes a bit of time, about 10 minutes, but there are plenty of others that you can do any time, for just a couple of minutes. A few of the games are a bit more involved, but they're all fun and the author does a great job explaining exaclty how each game will help your child learn, how often it should be played and for how long. My 6 year old is at a good age for the book, and I can see that I will have some good games for later too. There are some games that my 4 year old likes as well. I wish I could give this book 6 stars. It's really great!

Great for Homeschoolers

Peggy Kaye is fantastic and homeschoolers should consider these books. The activities are easy to do. Most require little or no advance preparation. The author does a great job explaining the purpose of the activity and exactly what level of learner it may help. Some of the activities are so simple but so effective parents will wonder "hey, why didn't I think of that?"

I especially enjoyed the way the author introduces the activities. She tells of her experiences with the activity and how it helped one of her students. I always felt more confident and ready to do the activity after reading her introduction. Our child found many of the games really fun and asked to play them again and again. I feel like the books taught me a lot about how to make anything into a game. These books are a great alternative to boring workbooks and too much sitting still at a desk.

I bought this book based on the reviews I had seen on Amazon. I was hoping that it would be a book that was chock full of ideas for my Kindergarten classroom. I have gotten a few ideas, but it seemed to really focus more on grades 2-3.

I took this book out of the library hoping it would have some fun ideas for my four year old. I was not disappointed! The games are lots of fun and I appreciate that the author takes the time to explain what they are learning. We're only doing section one because of my daughter's age, but flipping through the book the other sections look good too. I am definitely buying this one and intend to look at the other books by this author too. I highly recommend this for any child!

This book is the best I've ever read on the subject of young female athletes; Silby and Smith have a complete understanding of the challenges faced by girls who are involved in athletics, and the book gives example after example of how a young female athlete can cope with various critical issues. As the step-father of a female high-school athlete whose team won the Maryland soccer championship, I can attest to how valuable the book has been to her.

Silby knows her stuff, and Smith's prose is clear, concise, and always on the mark. Interestingly, Smith is also the co-author of the book, "Just Give me the Damn Ball," written with football-star Keyshawn Johnson.

If you've got a daughter involved in athletics, this is the book for her (and you'll find it useful, too). I can't recommend the book more highly--it's great.

What an incredable book! As a skaters mom, I found it insightful, informative, and amazingly DEAD ON! My 12 year old daughter has gone through all the doubts and anxiety that comes with the sport of Figure Skating. This book has been a wonderful guide to handling all the situations that arise. Even if your skater is an amazing talent and you never come across the problems of self-esteem, performance anxiety, or "bad skate days", you must, MUST BY THIS BOOK ANYWAY...JUST IN CASE!

Excellent book for Coaches and Parents of Female athletes

I have coached club volleyball for six years and have been a club director for three years, a lot of the lessons that Dr. Silby presents are pretty lessons that I have learned over the years through sheer hard lessons. I wish that I had this book to reference when I first started to coach young women.

Dr. Silby's book has been less a revelation but a reinforcement of what I had learned these last few years. This is not to say that I learned nothing from the book, on the contrary, I feel like I have gained important nuanceson communicating with young women and allowing them to tell me how I can help them get better and stronger both physically and mentally. An invaluable book indeed.

The only slight problem is that the book is geared toward the coaches of both individual sports and team sports, so not all the lessons are applicable completely.

I would recommend this book for anyone who coach, or are looking to coach. The lessons embodied in the book will make the road to success in coaching much smoother.

Excellent coverage of many important issues.

As a father of 10-year-old and 6-year-old multi-sport female athletes (and their 4-year-old sister fast on their heels), and a coach of my girls' soccer and softball teams, I feel relieved that someone with the personal experience of having been an athlete and now working with athletes took the time to share their experiences and advice. Since my daughters also all figure skate, the personal experiences of the author's skating career are particularly insightful. Dr. Silby does an excellent job covering a wide range of topics and providing poignant positive examples for parents and coaches to use to better enjoy and improve their athlete's trying, joyous, frustrating, and fulfilling young lives. Thanks, Dr. Silby!!

Be aware, this book is more like Sports Psychology 101 than it is understanding and guiding female athletes. If you are a coach working with female athletes and you are looking at better ways to coach, read some of the UNC Womens National Team Soccer books. If you are looking for an intermediate book on Sports Psychology with examples using female athletes, this is what you get. It deals with individual issues for specific athletes with little applications to team sports. Parents who are looking to help their daughters with some psychology issues will find this book helpful. However, the remedy is usually seek professional help. This is an unique and rare sports psychology book geared towards female athletes.

What an exciting and fast paced adventure story! This was a series of books that were not easy to find until this collection.

Dan Abnett creates characters that has substance, flaws and strengths in the face of great conflict. This series surrounds a character by the name of Colonel Commisar Gaunt and his men in their struggles not only to retain their humanity but to fight an almost insurmountable enemy.

Maybe think of the TV show "Band of Brothers" in a furturistic Sci-Fi setting.

I didn't play the Warhammer 40K board games until after I read these stories. I enjoyed them so much I started to build models after the characters in these stories. This just added another layer of enjoyment for me that I could share with friends.

Following The Founding, this second omnibus of the Gaunt's Ghost's series tops the first in the amount of action and storytelling. With a fourth book that pushes the omnibus from a normal 700 pages to a whopping 1000 pages, The Saint is a big book.

HONOUR GUARD
-----------
Honour Guard begins at the end of a city fight. Gaunt has been disgraced and is sent on his final mission: a trip to recover the remains of a saint. What began as a simple recovery mission becomes an epic road trip, culminating with a mountain battle against thousand of enemies. Faith and prowess decide the outcome.

THE GUNS OF TANITH
------------
A planet calls out for help, and the Ghost's answer. An industrial city on a planet with toxic clouds has been taken by the enemy. The only way into the city is a dangerous air drop in the dead of night. The Ghosts must face not only the enemy, but the air itself. Even worse is the fact that the enemy has spread into the very fabric of the city, appearing out of nowhere to battle the ambushed troops.

STRAIGHT SILVER
-------------
A battle that has reached a stalemate is the Ghost's next destination. The forces of good and evil have locked horns on a world where trench warfare rules. The Ghost's must adapt to these new conditions, or face death at the face of the overwhelming amount of enemy artillery. The only chance of victory lies with the Ghost's as they must make a suicidal behind enemy lines mission.

SABBAT MARTYR
-------------

The final fight in the Ghost's assigned star system, a holy world is besieged by enemy troops. The world cannot fall due to one fact: a saint has risen to lead the troops on the planet to victory. But even as the Ghost's are sent to protect the world, the agents of evil have sent a group of elite assassins known only as "The Nine" to remove the one thing holding the defense together: Gaunt himself. Only the Ghost's faith in their leader and the saint will lead them to victory as they facing unwinnable battles and unbeatable enemies.

The book is the second omnibus and four novels in one. I have not read the first three, but the characters grabbed on and held me all the way through. The Warhammer 40K universe is an unforgiving and inhuman place, but these are humans at their best and their worst. Gaunt and the boys are the best of the Guard and this is a great story with some good twists and turns. I highly recommend it.

Is it just me, or does it seem weird that my copy of the book is missing 49 pages? Pages 880 to page 929 are missing. It says here that the book has 1024 pages.....so does mine, except that 49 pages are missing. I'm wondering if anybody else has seen this problem? Or do I have the "worth some money mess up book"?

Get in the Game is not only a book about Cal Ripken Jr., his consecutive games streak and his fine career. It's a recap of some simple but overlooked values.

Using his core strength in baseball to describe his thinking, the reader will not only appreciate some particular plays in his career, but also down-to-earth ways of approaching things in life.

This book provides extremely useful guidelines in dealing with situations we all eventually run into in our lives. While alluding to baseball related examples, it does not simply dwell solely on recounting Mr. Ripken's impressive baseball accomplishments or relate amusing/interesting anecdotes. Instead it gives thought-provoking insights into two all too fast-disappearing basic axioms in our country's psyche: "practice makes perfect," and "do unto others." I highly recommend this book for everyone, especially young people still in their formative years. In fact, it presents an excellent opportunity for parents to reconnect with their child(ren) by reading it aloud and together, with discussion centering on each of the eight elements as they are completed.

Review Date: 2007-07-11
This is an excellent book by one of our modern-day greats: Cal Ripken, Jr. A native of Aberdeen, Maryland, he spent his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles. He broke a record that many said would stand forever, and this book parallels the former holder of that feat, Lou Gehrig, with a treasure trove of quotes about the latter's life. In a sense, we learn as much about the character and perseverance of Mr. Gehrig as we do about Mr. Ripken.

One early quote set the tone for the entire book:

"I just played because I loved the game, and because I had been taught certain principles that prevented me from backing away from anything."

Mr. Ripken chronicled his youth, the special relationship with his father, Cal, Sr., and then explained in concise fashion his eight principles for perseverance. Some themes related directly to baseball, while others are about life itself.

Here are the eight elements:

Right Values
Strong Will to Succeed
Love What You Do
Preparation
Anticipation
Trusting Relationships
Life Management
The Courage of Your Convictions

This is a very entertaining and informative book. Thank you for the opportunity to review it.

An education in more ways than one.

I am not now nor have I ever been a baseball fan. It just never appealed to me. But Cal Ripken has been heralded as the nicest guy in baseball and the sub-title ("8 elements of perseverance that make a difference" was definitely attractive, so I read the book.

I'm glad I did.

Ripken interweaves a literal history of baseball into his core message of how persevverance plays out in a ball game and life. It's an interesting, informative approach. I can see why Ripken has succeeded in his motivational speaking career as he did is his baseball career: life literally starts anew each day for this guy. Yesterday's msitakes and regrets are left behind. One of the most fascinating parts of the book for me are Ripken's descriptions of team work in baseball and how it works. Frankly, because I've never been a fan, I didn't realize just how much cooperation and coordination is required on the field.

Overall, a very worthwhile read and uplifting.

I bought this book after listening to a segment on NPR's Weekend Edition with Scott Simon. After listening to Jim Gladstone and Scott Simon play some of the verbal games over the air, I was interested. I wrote the name of the book, purchased from Amazon.com, and have now played nearly all of the games in the past 3 or 4 years.

I have three children under the age of 4 and they are intrigued by the games, but they are much much too young for any of the games listed, but someday... someday.

I'm also the coordinator for the gifted and talented education program at my elementary school. These games are EXCELLENT for gifted students. Some of their parents report that my GATE students would rather play Sprouts or some of the games from this book than watch tv or play video games. Victory!

I look forward to nights, after my three girls are asleep for the night, when my wife and I can sit in the living room and playing "free" versions of Boggle or Scatergories. I love this book.

Buy it. For $10, you can't go wrong. (And it also makes a pretty good Christmas gift.)

I bought my first copy of this book at a bookstore after browsing through it and discovering some old games like Ghost and Grandmother's House that I remembered playing with my folks as a kid. The new variations on these old games make them fresh again, and there are many other games that I'd never played before -- and which are definitely not 'just kids' stuff'; there's a game called Gravilex that's going to be a big part of my summer this year. I also appreciate the way the book shows you how to play famous board games like Boggle and Scattergories without having to buy the boxed games...It saves money and also lets you play these games anywhere, without having to carry around the box, board, dice, etc. This is a great little book to stockpile and give as gifts -- I'm going to send it to my nieces and nephews at sleepaway camp this summer (Since my chocolate chip cookies are now considered contraband!). In any case, a super little book and a really good value.

I decided to check out this book after reading an interview with the author at UsedWigs.com. I thought it sounded like fun for 10 bucks. Turns out that while some of the games are easy standards that I already new (Password, Ghost), the most interesting stuff here is brand new and really involving. The last board game I bought was Scattergories, which cost like $30...well, this tells you how to play that one without buying any special equipment (its obvious, but I never thought of it), so you end up getting dozens of games for less than what a single one costs when you buy the boxed version. Good deal. Smart stuff.

In this day and age of constant visual and aural stimulation--marketing and advertising messages, music of all sorts, cellphones, PDAs, you name it--it's SO refreshing to see that not everyone has given up hope. Jim Gladstone is obviously someone who values the grey cells, and puts his talent as a writer where his quirky interests are. Not only is this book FULL of original and updated games that often require nothing more than what many of us had on-hand in first grade: a pencil, some paper, a little extra time and a sense of playfulness (okay, and maybe a little competitiveness, too), it's also beautifully designed, durable and very portable. Buy this book and keep it in your backpack, briefcase--whatever you drag your stuff around in. Next time you're stuck on a plane, bus or even your own car and your sick of listening to the garbage on the radio or watching the fluff on TV, pull out Gladstone's Games to Go and give your brain a much-needed workout. For parents who've had enough of GameBoys and giant headphones that keep your kids as alienated from you in the car or on a plane as they are at home, Gladstone offers some fun ways to interact that won't cramp the style of even the most jaded teen or tween. And for the rest of us who just like a good, challenging game now and then (and hate it when dinner party conversation starts to wane), you're CRAZY not to have this book at arm's reach.

This book really is cool and worth the money. I ordered through Scholastic and paid a little bit less. My intent was to be able to teach my 8-year-old, 3rd grade daughter some cool principles, tricks, games for math so she could improve. She's (surprisingly, right) not interested in the book really. I think she's just a little bit too young for it. But I loved the book. When we work over the summer, I will do a little bit at a time with her: Prime Numbers lesson, history of number systems, etc. Little chunks should help improve her understanding and I think ALL kids should be exposed to the lessons in this book early.

This is a truly awesome book, full of fascinating insights, entertaining all the way through and amazingly wide in scope, ranging from school math to jokes, puzzles, games and high-level topics like chaos. Note that the "mistake" mentioned in the first editorial review is not really a mistake but an old joke: How many animals of each sex did Moses take on the Ark? The answer of course is "none - it was Noah who built the Ark!"

As a homeschooling parent, I have read a lot of math books written for children. Go Figure! is one of the freshest and most fun! The pages are saturated with information, and my one complaint is that it feels a bit visually overwhelming. Don't let the colorful pages fool you, this book is very meaty and will take some time to digest. My son really enjoyed the section on ancient number systems. The chart on pages 24-25 compares Babylonian, Hebrew, Roman, Mayan, Hindu, and others. Readers can also learn about the golden ratio and phi, prime numbers, Pascal's triangle, buckyballs, and much, much more. There are nearly 100 pages of information here, geared toward middle school and up.

Both the text and drawings of this book will have you in stitches, and keep you wondering. While seemingly simplistic, the small phrases like "FLEX, ELF" accompanied by a drawing of a dwarf desperately trying to muster up to large cloned muscle men are absolutely hilarious. If you love words, language, and a sharp wit, this is the book for you. Truly one you will want to return to again.

this book is found in one of my local libraries and it helps me to get out of my adult depressions. I'm especially enamored of the guy in the Chinese Restaurant who's asked by the waiter, "Wonton?" and his reply is "Not now!"

Palindromes. Hard to write, fun to read, especially in the expert hands of Jon Agee.

A palindrome is a word or phrase that is spelled the same way forwards or backwards, as in "Go hang a salami! I'm a lasagna hog!", which has to be one of the longest and most complicated palindromes in existence.

Mr. Agee has collected some fantastically fun and funny palindromes in this collection illustrated by the author. There is a picture of a lion on a sunny beach with a bottle of "lion oil" behind him. Winnie the Pooh is doing the hula hoop (it's "Pooh's hoop", of course!!). My personal favorite (and an exceptionally long palindrome) is of an inventor in a room full of switches, gadgets and wires. In the middle of the room sits a tiny box playing music. He exclaims, arms out, "I madam, I made a radio! So I dared! Am I mad, am I?!" Go ahead, spell it backwards...

In a world where good English skills are swiftly becoming a rarity and few folk seem interested in grammar or word games, Mr. Agee's book is a breath of fresh air. At times, the illustrations fit the palindromes so perfectly that you almost forget that these are special sentences that are quite difficult to create, and the read more like a comic strip.

Kudos to Mr. Agee for not only playing about with words to create Palindromes, but for publishing some for those struggling folk (like myself) who can't seem to come up with any of our own!! Readers may also want to check out his other book, "So Many Dynamos!"

I use the Goddess Tarot deck each evening and I enter the date and the position of the card drawn. This gives me a wonderful quick reference for my readings and helps me keep track of the flow of the magical and wondrous vibrational energy the readings provide.
I have been a research astrologer for over forty years and use the tarot to double check myself. I also give readings and have come to appreciate the beauty and grace of the Goddess Tarot cards. I am a big fan of Kris' artistic ability.
The workbook provides additional learning props and I am now on my second book. Great Idea! Beverly Helayne Evenson, PhD Holistic Health Sciences

I've been reading tarot and runes for about ten years. I have changed decks several times through the years as I mature spiritually. My readings are based more on intuitive skills than the medium/method used. I don't go "By the Book." The deck speaks to me and will communicate traditional meanings as they apply. The Goddess Tarot resonated with me immediately. I planned to read with this deck at an event a month from the time I acquired it and ordered the workbook to help familiarize myself with the author's intent and interpretation. I like the simplicity of the workbook. It can be used to learn tarot or this particular deck as well as a meditation tool or journal. The thought-provoking questions prompt inner reflection and can help develop intuitive skills. The reader can do the work in order or as cards come up. I haven't written in my copy because I have a feeling I may want to go through it once a year or so. Highly recommended.

I am re-reading the book and I can't tell you how much I am enjoying it all again.....Don McHugh has a wonderful gift for "telling" the story instead of writing it! I am starting to catch myself keeping score on my day's activities and making notes for business practice, just like I do on the golf course...did I stay on the fairway off the tee, did I get to the green in regulation? What a great read! And Fun too!

Roaming through the management section of a local bookstore, my
attention was caught by the title of this book. As a golfer, always in search of improvement, and as a former executive and now teacher in a university management department, this had to be mandatory reading. What I found is a gem! I heartily recommend it to everyone interested in developing and maintaining
successful relationships with others. Numerous books are available for management training, none better than Don McHugh's approach of comparing the game of golf to the qualities of leadership. Golf and the Game of Leadership is a primer for the understanding of management and leadership action. The lessons throughout the book provide the apprentice supervisor and the senior manager a core of knowledge to guide their leadership actions. If you are a "professional practicing manager" or an "enthusiastic amateur," Don McHugh's writings will provide great enjoyment along with clear understanding of the essentials for successful leadership and success in life.

I am a business executive and an avid golfer, but like us all, could use tips for betterment in both areas. While my golf game may never improve, this book effectively outlines business strategies that can help from the smallest detail all the way up to full-scale corporate ideas. I initially selected the book because of my interest in golf and desire to increase leadership and effectiveness in the workplace. Having seen McHugh's resume, I not only trust his advice, but am not at all surprised by the success he has achieved. The book is a must-read for anyone in the business world, or that just loves the game of golf!

As a professional in the business world with aspirations to obtain an MBA, I found McHugh's book on leadership highly educational. Using golf as a backdrop, McHugh successfully conveys his message on how to be an effective leader. The format of the book - a round of golf - flows nicely. McHugh's leadership lessons are complimented by interesting, attention-grabbing stories. The "Quick Tips" sections, found at the end of each hole, showcase McHugh's years of experience in the leadership field. I whole-heartedly recommend this book - not only is it apparent McHugh understands what it means to be a leader in the business world, but also in life.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the art and science of being an effective leader. Donald McHugh's ability to utilize meaningful stories about golf and its players to emphasize leadership techniques gives the reader a refreshing way to learn. I was sorry to get to the end of the book.
