This is a terrific book and I'm not even a golfer. I didn't care much for the movie; a buddy of mine recommended reading the book and WOW, it's so much better. I'm not sure who wrote the movie but Frost does a great job of telling the story and holding on to your interest. I loved the biographical background and personality insights he offers. He's a terrific writer.

Great detail is setting the stage of how society viewed golf and its champions and how this tournament took that to the next level in popularity. Gives great detail intothe lives of Vardon, Ray, Francis and even Walter Hagen at the beginning of his career. Great for anyone who loves the history of golf and a good old fashion underdog story.

I love this book and my adopted daughter loves this book. Granted she is about to turn 2, however, she still will pick this book up for me to read regularly. I have recommended this book as well to the adoption forums I belong too. Great message we are all different and it is about the love.

My three-year-old adopted son from Ethiopia loves this book! Warning, though, the grumpy Mrs. Walrus has kind of freaked him out. I have to read her line with a really happy lilt to my voice. Depending on how sensitive your child is you may want to edit Mrs. Walrus's words/tone the first time you read it to your child. I don't think my son can imagine how/why an "adult" would say to a child, "Now go away. Leave me alone."

I bought this book a couple of weeks ago and he has, a few times since then, talked about being sad when he had no mommy and no daddy in Ethiopia. He was just a few months old when he was adopted and was in excellent care while living there so I'm guessing that this book has put that idea into his head. Not a bad thing...just be aware that it might bring out emotions in your child that he or she hasn't discussed before.

I absolutely adore this book. My sister gave it to us before we traveled to China to adopt our daughter. She's just over two now and has read this book with me dozens of times. We both love the illustrations, and even at a very young age, she "gets" the idea that Choco finds a mother in Mrs. Bear, regardless of the fact that they look nothing alike. (I confess I still get misty every time I read it.) The message is delightfully done--not schmaltzy, not overdone. I would recommend this to any family--adoptive or not.

I remembering absolutley loving this book as a kid, even though for the life of me I cannot quite remember why. But as far as pointless folktales go, this one really hits the spot. And how can I ignore those amazing illustrations and those silly monkeys? Not much in the way of plot, but somehow the book manages to be incredibly entertaining for some reason unknownst to me. Oh well. Maybe that is its charm.

I remember a teacher reading this book to the class (a long time ago!) and now I read it to my 27 month old granddaughter. She loves the story and likes to immitate the monkeys. It's one of her favorite books. Our book is a soft cover, which I didn't realize at the time of purchase. With all its use, I wish I would have purchased a hard cover or even as a board book if it's offered that way.

Captain Kangaroo read me this book some 40 years back. I remember laughing then. My kids, all teens now, liked the book which is not meant to be read so much as performed. Reading becomes action as one verbally plays the parts of the pedlar and the monkeys. My theory, at least, is that children will enjoy reading when it has more vitality than a pre-bedtime drone and learn that books are not dead repositories of information, but interact with our imaginations and become alive. Little books like this, a few moments of funny story, make a good impression on young minds------and are fun to read in their own right. This is cute and clever.

Simply put, this is one of the finest books about horse racing and especially the gigantic black filly who broke the heart of a nation. Jane Schwartz has written a classic about one of the most famous thoroughbreds of all time. She has researched this story so that one feels a part of what actually happened in the life of Ruffian.

This is an amazing book! I loved every second of it from start to finish... I wish there were more to follow. One of the greatest throroughbreds of all times finally gets a great book. I learned so much about her life that just added to her brilliance. Everyone should know about this horse- most don't or say once she saw real speed she couldn't handle it and broke down. This is not the case and whether or not you are a horse lover, know a lot about racing or not, this story will get you hooked. I definately recommend this book, it will not disappoint you! You may shed a tear or two at the end, but it is WELL worth it.

A beautifully told story of a true champion whose heart and will remained strong even when her body failed her. Ruffian was a special horse who mananged to capture the hearts of racing fans and average citizens alike. Her tragic end was truly heartbreaking (get out the Kleenex for the last few chapters). Unfortunately I am not old enough or lucky enough to have seen Ruffian race, but now that I have read about her, I will certainly never forget her!

This book will make you cry, laugh, sigh and then start all over again. It has the imagery in it to put you right there with the people who loved Ruffian. You can see her, and all connected to her. I love this book because it made me feel as if I were there, seeing what was going on. I could almost smell the horses, feel the electricity of the track, and hear the people cheering Ruffian on.

Ruffian: Burning From The Start has the best descriptive narration I have ever read in a book. I have never felt so much joy, happiness, pain, and anger from reading one account of any animal or person. You must read this book to experience it for yourself. There is no comparison to other volumes about Ruffian.

Ms Schwartz has all the heart and the writing skills to rival any other prize winning author. I love this book, had it for a long time and was afraid to read it knowing the obvious horrific outcome. Once I picked it up, I could not stop reading, nor did I want the story to end. You will scream for the real life characters to stop and realize, please do not let her run in that match race!

I have read it many times, and recommend it to others as the Bible of Ruffian.

Excellent writing about one of the great race horses ever!

Anyone who ever watched this filly race knew what a special sight it was, to see her pulling away from the others, compelled to race. She had an excellent trainer but I happen to believe she also had an instinctive drive to use every bit of power and heart she had. This book chronicles it all, from start to finish and it'll capture the heart of both horse lovers and anyone who simply likes to read a good book. Ruffian

This was one of my favorites as kid. Then, sadly, I forgot about it until stumbling across it in the school library. It is once again one of my favorites. Cynics might roll their eyes at this tribute to good ol' days gone by, but I personally appreciate the nostalgia and the house with its subtle face parts is adorable. You feel so bad for the cute little house! It is also an observation at the change of time. I don't know how intense that is as a theme, but I found it touching and Burton tells the tale with such heart and care.

DISCIPLINE

Review Date: 2008-04-23
I've just finished DISCIPLINE, which along with my beloved SIDDARTHA, engages both my brain and my emotions, and titillates my endless curiosity about how things really are and what might happen "if."

DISCIPLINE was a challenging book to read in some aspects, because it amalgamates physics, chess, music, eastern philosophies, and high finance. I know nothing about the first two and a modicum of the last three. If the story of Douglas Cole's unfoldment and the suspense surrounding Jefferson and Jackson had not been so engaging, I might have given up as my seventy-one year old brain sloughed through uncharted seas of subjects beyond my reading experience.

As I read this astonishing boook by a fledgling writer, I was at first impressed by his excellent vocabulary and fresh metaphors. Then I became amazed at the way Ahlgren effortlessly wove complex and difficult subjects into an intriguing story.

But what really kept me reading was the recognition of states of mind/emotion that ring true in Ahlgren's descripition of multiple universes. And the tantalizing realization that he is not depicting science fiction, but rather the true state of mankind.

I suspect that each person, according to his/her experiences, will come away with a different perception of this extraordinary book, so unlike anything else in popular fiction.

Paco, I eagerly await your next book. May it be even more astounding so that your readers will stretch their perceptions far beyond what we think we know.

This is a book that all should read. I love supporting new authors, although most first time novelest leave wondering why. This was not the case with Discipline!

Paco takes physics, chess, and philosophical thoughts and turns them in to an adventure. I couldn't put the book down once I started, and am eagerly anticipating the follow up novel.

This book has changed my perspective on life forever...I've read thousands of books and not one has touched the core of my inner being as this one has.

Paco combines eastern philosophies, quantum physics, spirituality, and financial analysis in a way that everyone can understand. The fluidity and movement keep you sucked in up to the last page and then starving for more..

Discipline accentuates what Faith really is and has left me with an inner peace that I didn't have before. I can't wait to see what Paco brings to the table next!!!

As I hungrily browse the new release aisles I usually find nothing but detective/murder stories, political/terrorist thrillers, or stories of love lost, yawn! I'm always looking for great new novels but rarely find any that offer new ideas, life lessons, and philosophy. This book was exactly what I was looking for. It's thought provoking, challenges beliefs, and it empowered me to learn more about the economic and spiritual concepts in the book. I want to be inspired when I finished reading a book, and that's what happened when I read Discipline, thanks Paco. I can't wait for a sequel, but until then, I'll just keep rereading and rereading this one and it'll be time well spent, thanks!

Uneven--a case of missed potential
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-08
The book opened really well, and beyond the opening were some really engaging scenes. Unfortunately they were intermixed with flat introspection, plot points that could have been much more deftly handled, two-dimensional-to-the-point-of-caricature supporting characters, five pages of a family friend explaining quantum physics, and a narrative voice that was too often intrusive.

A major tragedy early on in the book failed to reach me on an emotional level. How could that happen? I was interested in those characters--I cared about them, or thought I did until the tragedy happened and I had no response to it. I read on for a while after that, but the antagonistic characters became overdone to the point of making me say, "Okay, I'm just not interested in this anymore." A little subtlety (or finesse) would have done a world of good.

The most disappointing thing is that the good stuff in this novel was GOOD and showed that Ahlgren had the potential to make this a fantastic book, but it's not a fantastic book; it's an uneven book that failed to hold my interest.

This entire Trilogy is just amazing. I was given a present of the first book when I was about 7 (10 years ago), and I immediately wanted the next two! I fell in love with Julian there and then, and was never able to understand why Jenny didn't just choose him! I've read these books over 20 times, and they're all falling apart. Everybody in the entire world should read them, because you're missing out if you don't. I highly recommend them. The last book is a nice finish, but it's incredibly sad. I wish it had ended differently! (...)

In the trilogy of the Forbidden game i thought that the first and third were the best books I've ever read, and although the second was good it didnt even compare to these. I thought the game was great but if I were jenny I'm afraid I would miss out on it because one look and a few words from Julian and I would run away with him straight away. The books were made to be so real that I'm still searching for my own door, call me sad but you have to admit if Julian wanted you, you wouldn't be able to resist!

This was the first LJS book I ever read and it awakened me. Never before had I realised what a book could truly do to a person. This, the final book of the Forbidden Game trilogy, really gives the reader an insight to all the characetrs. It shows how they have developed, especially Julian. It also brings out different feelingsof the main characetr, Jenny. She learns so much about Julian and learns to understand. This book is definatly the most important and is a wonderful way to end the trilogy.

This is my favourite book, only challenged by other of L J Smith's works. She is an amazing woman and it is well worth reading her stuff.

In the final book in The Forbidden Game Trilogy Jenny and her friends cross over into the shadow world to rescue Tom, her boyfriend, and Zach, her cousin. Once they enter the shadow world a new and even more deadly game begins because in this world, their nightmares are more real than ever. Trapped in a demonic carnival they are at the mercy of not only Julian, but all the other frightening creatures of the shadow world. Will Jenny and her friends all make it out or have they bitten off more then they can chew?

I was fairly pleased with the conclusion to the series although the ending was a bit disappointing. This is probably the most well written book out of the three. I nearly cried during some of the scenes. I was also happy that Michael got some character development at last. Actually the characters in general were handled very well, especially Julian. Besides the slightly disappointing ending, the only other complaint I have is that it was far too short. The first book in the series still remains my favorite but this one comes in at a very close second. I highly recommend this series.

I like the concepts of the pictures being slightly blurred when the train is moving, b/c we match our train sounds to the speed as we;re reading. It's very delightful, it def deserved the caldecott medal.

Dave Lakahni's book is about common sense and teaches the skills that people need to communicate both verbally and physically. It shows a wonderful understanding of an art that is logical and usable.

I have read a great many books on influencing and persuading, and this is one of the very best.

A survivor of a cult, Dave is well equipped to understand what can happen when people manipulate for his or her own ends. He has seen all the tricks, and knows the difference between manipulation and ethical persuasion.

None of us likes to be manipulated but to be persuaded is quite another matter. If someone is able to persuade me to take a new action, I want to learn how he or she did it!

It is extremely easy to apply the principles in the book, and he boils his approach down into six tenets of persuasion:
1. Outcome based
2. Best-interest focused
3. Truthful
4. Goal and time oriented
5. Personal
6. Ethical.

He expands on and explains each of these with well-chosen examples.

The book is attractively produced with a "Review" and "Success Questions" at the end of each chapter.

Dave has persuaded me that he has found a number of useful ways of influencing people without manipulating them and at the same time remaining ethical and above board.

For anyone who needs to persuade and influence other people this book is excellent. It also offers you a crash course in how to avoid being manipulated by others.

Highly recommended.

I am overwhelmed by the content of the book and the kind of new thought process I am experiencing. The outlook has changed a lot especially because of the kind of work I am doing (Online Marketing). There were few changes I made immediately, specially adding the word "curious" as I could feel how this would work when applied on me.

There is so much that can be written about the way book can influence your work specially in the field of marketing, but don't forget the difference between Manipulation and Persuasion before you apply the principle in your real life, with friends, families, acquaintances as the principle are effective in these areas as well.

In one sentence, this book has the "the basic principles of survival" that has not been discussed so deeply till now.
