Hilarious, Intelligent, Informed, Wise Kate Clinton!

WHAT THE L? is one of the more satisfying books of Comedy that reminds us of the true definition of the term. For centuries Comedy and those who practice it, be they Greek players, court jesters, standup comedians/comediennes, or tabloid philosophers such as Will Rogers, depends on searching for human foibles and folks along the edge or in prominent positions of power and bringing those absurdities into the focal field of the public eye. Comedy's contralateral face is Drama/Tragedy and it is the admixture of the two that creates the pungent dialogue that induces gales of laughter followed by gasps of recognition of truths uncovered.

Kate Clinton is a brilliant mind with a keen gift of finding the words and phrases to defuse popular heroes and heroines and myths and rumors and, yes, intolerable facts. Covering the years 2001 through 2004 she adroitly addresses issues of our government under the reign of King George Dubya and his smarmy court, gay marriage and all the implications of that nascent institution, such famous folk as Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg, Hilary Clinton, Ellen Degeneres, gay and lesbian comics, global warming, and international political arenas - all with informed skill and fine writing. She makes us laugh with her wit and candor and at times venomous diatribes but she also makes us think (remember 'thinking'?).

Kate Clinton has been the Governor of New Jersey, a columnist for The Advocate, The Progressive, and has been on many talk shows and newscasts. She is a 'Lesbian American', able to speak sensitively for minority groups, and able to inform us on nearly every topic that graces (and gets lost in) the media. She is a true master of Comedy in the ancient sense. And she is just plain hilarious!!! Highly recommended reading ...and re-reading and re-reading. Grady Harp, May 05

In _What the L_, Clinton proves she is a courageous and hysterical smart-a** who is not afraid to take anyone--the W administration, the Catholic Church, the LGBT community-- to task for hyprocrisy. Read _What the L_ and laugh, it may well keep you from weeping the next time you watch the news.

Reading "What the L" is like having Kate in your kitchen, mulling over the most incredible news of the day. If you've ever been in one of her audiences you'll hear her voice, imagine one eyebrow archly raised, pause a second while her words sink in. And then you'll laugh. Omigod, you'll laughandlaughandlaugh. She delivers weapons-grade comedy--for our safety and survival and the defense of democracy.

Discovering my hidden talent

This book helped me discover my hidden talent of observation. Though I'd like to say I draw well, it's not exactly true. But thanks to this book, I've been able to refine my drawing skills and better capture the details that catch my eye and are so hard to explain. Being able to communicate the details on paper is fulfilling in a whole new sense!

This wonderfully illustrated book is truly an adventure in the love of nature and all its creatures. The author presents an easy-to-understand approach to journal sketching through the seasons by providing the steps that help you draw what you see and feel. The sketches are based on favorite natural areas in Boulder CO but the drawing techniques are universal and can be used by the young-at-heart from 5 to 95. This delightful book will even encourage the non-artist to pick up a pencil and start sketching and will greatly enhance the way one see's and responds to nature.

This is a great book for people who think they have to be Rembrandt to keep an artistic journal. The author does a great job teaching beginers not to stress about making perfect sketches. The lively fun text puts emphasis on observation and just getting out there and doing it. This would make a great book for schools.

I like all of the study guides that John Eldredge has put together. This journal is different than the study guides in that it is a daily "Here's a thought..." product where the study guide helps to take you a lot deeper into your walk with the Father God. I have found it really good at helping me have a great "Man-thought" for the day...

I've owned mine for a while now and actually haven't started writing -- but I definitely plan on it. The journal simply consists of self discovery questions distilled from the book. You're given a page to write about each. I compared this to the Wild At Heart Field Manual in person -- I took the Journal instead. It's not just rehashed paragraphs -- it's rehashed questions with writing space! You just have to make the time and write freely. Get this instead of the Wild At Heart Field Manual. It's absolutely excellent. You just have to make the time and write.

I was hesistant at first when thinking about ordering
this journal. I mean, why pay money for a journal to
record my wine batches. But after getting it and
starting to use it, I'd never go back to the old way.
Using the journal has made tracking my batches and
even making my wine batches alot easier. All my
batches and all my notes are all in one convienent
spot now. I would recommend this journal to every
home wine maker.

One thing I discovered after I started using the journal, was that it made it easier when making wine with a friend. I just grab my journal and head over to there house, I know I have all my notes and batches in there. I also discovered that before I got the journal I kept looking up the same info online again and again. Now I add the info to the notes section in my journal and it's always handy next time I need it.

I've read my fair share of books about Wisdom. This is different,... every passage with their illustration from great artists like Van Gogh and Monet has enough impact to make you completely absorb what is being said through these words. Don't take my word for it, .. read it and you'll know what I mean. This book made a difference in my life. Truly .. wisdom in it's true form !

Not only is this journal full of valuable information, you actually have a place to write in your own thoughts, feelings and ideas. Dr. Northrup knows how to connect with her readers in a warm, available style. I'm very impressed with the informative content and the interactive format. In addition, the spiral bound aspect makes it easier to write in because it opens up flat. I highly recommend this book. Pamela D. This "Wish Upon a Star" Baby Journal is a great product and would be a great gift for a mommy-to-be. It includes all the important milestones like: first tooth(including a tooth chart), rolling over, sitting up, walking, first words and so much more. It even includes a growth chart and 'corner stickers' for you to use to put your own pictures in the designanted areas. It also has pages for information about family, the day the baby was born, the homecoming, thoughts from mommy and daddy, and goes all the was up to 3 years of age. I loved this baby journal and how I was able to keep track of everything for my son. I know that it will be a great thing to look at down the road when he is all grown up.

A Hidden Gem

Review Date: 2004-06-23
The only thing that disappoints me about this book is that so few people have read it. Van Willard's diaries are very different from most other Civil War accounts. They are extremely well written; I was surprised that he wasn't a well-known writer, considering the engaging text. Willard doesn't go into the minutiae of daily life, but presents an all-around account that is on a completely different level than other soldiers' diaries or letters.

You won't be disappointed with this book!

View the Civil War from a Soldier's Perspective
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-22
This isn't just another Civil War soldier's diary; Van Willard wrote 5 complete journals or "books" during his enlistment with the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry. You will discover that Willard was a very insightful and educated fellow, as he offers his thoughts and opinions about the war, the south, slavery, immigrant troops, the Iron Brigade, officers and so forth. Viewing the war from his eyes offers the reader an entirely different perspective than what we are used to finding in other Civil War books and diaries.

I highly recommend this book for any civil war buff or for anyone interested in the finest regiment to ever leave the Badger State, Wisconsin's 3rd Regiment of Infantry Volunteers.!

Fantastic reading! One gets the feeling that you've just discovered a set of dusty old diaries written by your great-great grandfather. The only thing missing is the original quill pen writing and the smell of old paper! There is no mistaking this was written by a man who was there. The author was no ordinary soldier-he was obviously intelligent and well educated by the way he retained and portrayed so vividly the events and topics of the period. This is not a military history, although there is much historical fact recorded. He discusses not only the battles and life as a soldier, but also the current thinking of both the Union supporters and the rebellion supporters. The editors comments are helpful, often providing important relavent information and correcting historical mistakes. Not all of the text was written on the front lines. Much of it was written in recent retrospect, and probably with the help of other soldiers accounts; so it isn't entirely first hand. Nonetheless, it's as close to the original story one can get. The discussion of the battle scenes is detailed enough to evoke real empathy toward all who lived during the war, yet is sparing of any gory detail. I'm not a military buff. I'm a history buff. I enjoyed the reading for its originality. It puts you squarely back to the 1860's.

Great Ceasar's Ghost! Roz Warren has scored a huge hit with her new quote book, "Women's Lip." Warren, who edited a groundbreaking and much loved series of women's humor anthologies & cartoon collections (see her "Women's Glib," "Women's Glibber, " &c.), raises the bar here for quote book quality in the spirit of her earlier "Glibquips." If you are the kind of person who usually only buys humor books to give as gifts, do yourself a big favor and pick up a second copy of this one for yourself. Go ahead! You're smart enough, you're pretty enough, and you could use a good laugh! I understand that the earlier titles in the series are coming back into print soon. Hurrah! Did I mention that I like this book!?

This is a great present for someone!! My family gave me this book. I couldn't believe it. It's great to have thier favorite sayings and see what they think about a lot of things. Some of the things we'd talked about, but lots of the topics were new for us. TIme will tell if I'll agree with all they said, but it was really interesting to hear their thoughts.

This really appealed to me as a gift to my nearly adult grandchildren. I've never seen anything like it. It is an easy way to let someone know what you think it takes to live a good life. I think it's important to pass on what we've learned, big or small. The book is good looking and the questions on each page are really good. There is usually one topic per page, just about right.

This is the perfect graduation gift. My wife and I are filling this out together for our son as a great way to explain our beliefs and advice without a "sit down" lecture. Our son can read it in private, at his own pace and keep it as a record of "us," always. My wife loves writing the parts on love (how to know when you're in love, what makes a good marriage...) and body health (exercise do's and don'ts, good-tasting nutritious meals...) and I like the sections on spirituality (what being spiritual means, what to do when your faith is shaken...) and success (special heroes and mentors, and how to look at failure...). We feel good about doing this for him.
