Game Studies Books

I love puzzles - sudoku, hanjie, mazes, logic puzzles, & word searches. The hidden picture maze books offer something you don't get when you complete an ordinary maze or many of these other types of puzzles - you get a picture! (I thought that I'd be able to tell what the picture was before the puzzle was done, but quite often I found this wasn't the case.) Having something when you're done is what I also like about hanjie puzzles (often called griddlers, nanograms, and paint-by-numbers), but sometimes, late at night, those require too much thought. That's when I pull out my handy dandy "Hidden Picture" maze books and start coloring in the paths. They're just fun!

I found this book because I loved the author's other book, which was a collection of games for big groups to play. I got this just to see what he had done, but ended up doing all the puzzles! They were way more fun than I would have thought, just because the lists of words to find were super-clever: funny and smart and unusual. He also made the puzzles so that after you find all the words, the leftover letters in the grid spell out a phrase having to do with the puzzle's theme--so that was an extra little treat. The themes and puzzles are great for kids--even educational--but adults will have a good time, too.

For a few dollars, students can now get even with their science teachers. All they have to do is challenge the professor with some of the subtle puzzles in this fine little book.

Just what I needed to revamp my classroom. This is the first time I have taught in literacy centers, and this book is an immense help. There is so much out there for primary grades and literacy groups...but not for intermiediate grades. Took a while to put it all together, but hopefully, it will last me for years. Many thanks.

As a long-time teacher, I was quite impressed with Ms. Scharton's thorough description of each engaging lesson. Even though each lesson is presented in a step-by-step manner, Scharton avoids "teacher proofing" this curriculum. Instead, each lesson is offered in a user-friendly style, with helpful scenarios of how each has played out in actual classrooms, that will serve to assist teachers using these lessons for the first time to implement them completely, effectively, and confidently. This is an excellent resource that should be on your must-have list!

If you are a teacher and teach using Jan Brett books this is an excellent resource to add to your library. It has many creative activities to compliment some of her most popular book titles. With writing being one of the critical components of the new standardized tests, this book is a fresh approach to working with those skills. This teaching guide can be supplemented with some of the many activities that Ms. Brett has available on her web site.

Mem Fox is very popular in our school and this resource book was very welcomed by the teachers.

This book provides three levels of 3 or 4 timed, 15-20 question tests of the type on the PSAT and SAT. Then it gives explanations for the logic used to develop each solution/answer. The detailed answers provide great practice for anyone learning to take standardized tests, especially high schoolers

The fun graphics, such as ladybugs and frogs, really appeal to the young piano student. The games are imaginative, comprehensive and useful.
