This is probably the most inviting, beautifully done, charming series of astrological books for children and their parents that I have seen. The illustrations are perfect and the text is meaningful and obviously written by a knowledgeable astrologer, with a great sense of humor to boot. Each booklet contains a generic Welcome to Zodiac Zone which introduces the reader to a brief history of astrology. (Little side squiggles unobtrusively teach, such as "The word zodiac comes from the ancient word for "circle of animals" or my favorite "Psst! Looking for predictions? Sorry. The best astrologers know that the stars don't make things happen--people do!") There is a colorful astrological map showing the 12 signs, glyphs and dates, 2 pages of planets and even a few sentences on elements and qualities, all done in a very easy to read, fun fashion, good information comprehensible to the young and their parents. Each sign gets quite a treatment, enough that could even help a youngster, not only

I saw Magic for Grandparents in an early self-published version before it found a publisher. What amazed me was that it was so well written. Fun to go through. And very quickly I was able to master a few tricks - made me feel like a professional magician. And, believe me, I am a klutz! You don't have to be a grandparent to like this book.

Absolutely Awesome Idea Book

I love this book. The ideas are great and creative but do-able, not over the top foofy stuff that you would only make once. I love the hard cover and the binding, that allows the book to lay flat on the table. I'm very happy that i purchased this book.

Great variety, simple but nice!

I LOVE this book. I've been making cards for a couple of years now, so I have some experience. That said, the cards are easy to assemble using materials most of us cardmakers already have on hand.

Beginners should be OK with the instructions -- there aren't step-by-step diagrams, but there is a full-page color photo of each card, and fairly detailed instructions for how to put it together. Basic techniques and materials are explained in the first chapter, with photos of each item/tool.

The book is hardcover, spiral bound, so it lays flat. Nice touch!

I love the variety, too -- birthday, baby, friendship, thank you, sympathy, and love/wedding.

The designer uses embellishments in new ways, and offers suggestions for alternatives and substitutions. I found myself looking at a design and thinking "oh! THAT'S a neat way to use one of those - never thought of doing that ... "

This will be one of my "go to ..." books when I need to put something together quickly. It's a great source of inspiration. Well done.

I checked this book from the library and it has great garden structure design ideas and project plans. But the real value is how informative the book is. This is intended for the weekend warrior who is not especially knowledgeable about woodworking or carpentry but has enough skill to follow clear directions. It also gets you well grounded in basic technique so that you will be able to create your own unique designs for simple garden structures. To make a long story short - I am buying the book.

We're always on the lookout for great ideas for our garden. We have high standards and live in an executive neighborhood, so we look for quality and distinctive projects. This book has great ideas with well drawn plans and instructions.

We built a gothic trellise this weekend. There's not another like it in town. It looks great. Fresh from this success, I'm headed to Home Depot to pick up wood for two other projects--a formal entryway and a simple lattice design to cover an electric meter. Thanks for the great work putting this unique book together.

This is a great how-to book for one specific phonics & spelling teaching strategy. It has made a big difference in my third graders ability to sound out unknown words and incorporate their knowledge of spelling patterns. Making Words is geared for K-3rd. Making Big Words is for 3rd thru 5th graders. It's a hands-on approach and it is very adaptable. You can do it just as suggested or adjust it to your students' particular need. It includes hundreds of lessons. It can also be used in coordination with thematic units that you may be using in your room. A great resource. Worth every penny. I just love Patricia Cunningham!

I teach Title 1 disadvantaged reading students, most are learning English as a second language. I did a word a day with my 6th, 7th , and 8th graders. The making words lessons allowed me to introduce vocabulary, point out spelling patterns, talk about vowel variances, and talk about how our words are made up. I asked them to write the words as well as manipulate the letters. Sometimes, I asked them to group the words if there were several words with the same spelling pattern.

Knowledgeably compiled and deftly co-edited by Sarah-Marie Belcastro (Co-Director, Hamshire College Summer Studies in mathematics and Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Smith College) and Carolyn Yackel (Mathematics Instructor, Mercer University), "Making Mathematics With Needlework: Ten Papers And Ten Projects" is unique in that it combines mathematics papers with fiber arts project instructions. Each chapter showcases a particular project and that project features sections on mathematics and mathematics education along with detailed instructions for completing the needlecraft project. The featured projects include a Quilted Mobius Band (making a mobius quilt); Diphantine Equations (making a bi-directional hat); Sierpinski Variatins (making a Sierpinski shawl); a Two Knit Stiches Tours; Symmetry Patterns in Cross-Stitch; Algebraic Structure (making algebraic socks); Fortunatus's Purse; (K)Not Cables and Braids (making a pillow of Braid Equivalence); The Graph Theory of Blackwork Embroidery (embroidering a Holbeinian Graph); and making Hyperbolic Pants. Profusely illustrated, the text is fully accessible to non-specialist general readers with an interest in needlecraft, in the mathematics underlying needlecraft, as well as having a very special attraction for math students and fiber art enthusiasts alike.

Ok, I'm a bit of a math geek -- I have my masters in math. And I'm addicted to knitting books and yarn (as a quick perusal of my review history will demonstrate). So I ordered this book. Each chapter presents a new concept and a new project. The projects are not your typical fiber arts projects but they are all beautiful. They also should give even the most math-phobic individuals a new appreciation of the math.

I have taught math online to adult college students and this would be perfect "supplemental reading" to show people that math doesn't have to be scary.

Review of TMG! (Third Edition) by David Tonks

The Marketing Game! now appears in its third incarnation, some 14 years since the original launch.

Exsiting or former users of TMG!, either faculty or students, will recognise the latest version. The basic market model remains the same as do many of the operating procedures but this marketing simulation software now works through a Windows environment and contains many enhancements to improve ease of use. It is a very worthwhile and perhaps overdue update.

One noteworthy feature of TMG! is the modest cost. Unlike some alternative marketing simulations, there is no licence fee. The operating software is supplied with the Instructor version of the manual for TMG!

Very well written - clear and useful professional development tool. Great resource for classroom teachers. Many of the ideas are familiar but placed in one teacher friendly resource book. Helpful black line masters for parent surveys and student interviews. Tried the Robert Stepper lesson for tiered planning. Students were all engaged and teachers were able to assess student learning. Wished there were more sample tiered lessons- one for every content strand. Still, the book explains enough way to differentiate that a teacher can apply the work to the tool their school is using. We will apply it to EDM in our school.

Great homeschool resource

Review Date: 2008-02-24
I am preparing to homeschool my son and purchased "Math In Minutes" as a resource guide: a handy book of ideas to keep in my library so that I can provide a variety of activities in our curriculum. I have to say that I got more than I bargained for.
First, I am very happy with the way that the book is laid out. After a basic introduction, which is definitely aimed more at school teachers and administrators, the author organizes the activities into several chapters corresponding to a particular mathematical concept, for example Chapter 3 is Computation and Estimation activities, Chapter 4 deals with Measurement, Time, and Money activities, Chapter 6 is Sorting, Classifying, Graphing, Data Analysis, and Probability activities, etc. Each chapter begins with a description of the mathematical concept that will be covered and specific points for the teacher to consider about teaching the concepts to children. Although I was skeptical at first about age appropriateness (the book cover indicates that these are easy activities for children 4-8 years old, but the chapter titles looked a little daunting...what was seriation again, anyway??--and will a five year old understand estimation and probability??), I must admit that MacDonald does a GREAT job at succinctly and adequately covering these topics in her introductions so that a teacher fully understands how these topics pertain to and relate to the children and child development in general at the target age group. The chapter introductions made me feel comfortable with the concepts, both as a review of the math involved and as a platform for introducing the topic to my son.
Second, the activities themselves are creative and, I think for the most part, relatively easy and inexpensive to implement both at home and in the classroom. Also, the author tells us that a premise of the book is to provide quick ideas as well, so you aren't spending hours preparing for a game that a child decides he or she has no interest in after two minutes! (great idea!)There are a variety of activities listed for each area and, for some activities, there are even recommendations on how to change up the activity to continually challenge the student (such as creating an estimation station). I also enjoyed her chapter on putting things together as a Pizza Unit Study. I really think this is a book that I will be able to use for years...as my son grows and learns, rather than a simple list of math games and worksheets that, once "conquered", are far from challenging and even boring to repeat.

Another fun note about the book is that there are also recommendations for activities that tie in books and songs in order to provide a more thematic approach to the material.

I am enjoying the book immensely and am excited to introduce some of the games and math station ideas to my son as we begin homeschooling.

A compendium of 150 math activities specifically designed for children ages 4 to 8

Review Date: 2007-09-02
A compendium of 150 math activities specifically designed for children ages 4 to 8, "Math In Minutes" by Sharon Macdonald is a highly recommended addition to any preschool, elementary school, and home-schooling curriculum to introduce children to basic mathematical concepts and skills. MacDonald draws upon her more than fifteen years of experience and expertise training classroom teachers to create this compilation of math exercises and activities, each of which is in full compliance with the standards of The National council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Thoroughly 'kid friendly', "Math In Minutes" is an excellent tool for teaching mathematical literacy including number sense and numeration, computation and estimation; measurement, time, and money; geometry and spatial sense; sorting, classifying, graphing, data analysis, and probability; patters and number relationships; as well as problem solving and reasoning. Of special note is the final chapter 'Putting It All Together: A Pizza Unit of Study', as well as the extended glossary, appendices, and indexes.
