Felder's Comprehensive is perhaps one of the more surprising books that I have come across in a while. At first glance, Felder's looks like the yellow pages for design professionals. However, its contents surpass its simplistic cover.

With 10 specific sections (awards, competitions, design centers, education, events, media, museums, organizations, trade shows, and manufacturers), Felder's is an unparalleled one-stop resource for the design industries. Likewise, Felder's offers some rare and unique findings that are easy to miss by using other (for instance, I didn't know there was an association for Asian rug retailers).

I highly recommend Felder's Comprehensive due to its valuable design-relative content and its intriguing finds.

Charles and Ray Eames were two of the best industrial designers of the 20th century - but to call them "industrial designers" doesn't capture the range of work that they produced which included everything from architecture to educational movies. While they didn't write this book themselves, the author has managed to capture their spirit on the pages of this little treasure. It's almost as if you had Charles and Ray as your personal design coach. The book makes the assumption that you know something about their work, but even if you don't you can still gain from the advice (and if nothing else it's a great starting point to research their work). While I like to see pictures in a book aimed at designers, the few words speak volumes. The tips have a very zen like quality, for example tip number 2 is "Notice the ordinary." This book would make a great gift for any creative friend you have, or if you find yourself in a rut!

This is a big, lap-filling book containing translations of five of the books of the Hebrew Bible or Tanakh. They range from the incomparable Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) through the sexy Sheer Ha-Sheerim (Song of Songs) to the raucous book of Esther, folksy Ruth and the sobering Lamentations.

Normally, these are read in synagogue and we experience them as liturgy rather than literature. This lovely book is intended to provide a home reading experience-perhaps even a reading-aloud session. What makes it especially haunting are the 37 masterful watercolors by Leonard Baskin. These evocative full-page plates are positively Dantean in their reach and power and indeed, comparisons to Barry Moser's pen and ink drawings for Alan Mandelbaum's Divine Comedy.Inferno: The Divine Comedy (Bantam Classics).

This is a dramatic, impactful volume and one that seems destined to be passed down through generations.

This book is relatively thin compared to some reference books at about 200 pages, but it is filled with valuable information for people working with hydraulics and pneumatics. Included in this book is the following information:

Standards and Practices: ANSI Standards for Stationary Industrial Machinery; ISO Fluid Power Graphic Symbols and Circuits (Very Valuable); ANSI Subplate Standards.

Fluid Power Data: Abbreviations, conversion factors, metric units, fluid power formulae, CV and orifice calculations.

Prime Movers: Selection of induction motors, NEMA electric motor standards, motor amperage and other electric motor selection factors.

Transmission Lines, Connectors and Seals: Pipe threads, SAE ports, tubes and hoses, seals, pressure drop vs. fluid flow, and water hammer.

Fluids: Including hydraulic fluids, fluid conditioning and viscosity charts.

Actuators: Ram capacities, cylinder forces and speeds, fluid motor torque and column loading.

There is an additional information section that discusses reservoirs, heat transfer, pump inlet conditions, pipe bending, accumulators, and noise abatement.

This book is a must for workers in the hydraulics industry. The information is useful and is a nice augmentation to other technical references such as the Machinery's Handbook. I have been in the hydraulics industry for more than a decade and have found this book to be useful for a variety of purposes, including being a resource for drawing symbols, conversion factors, and design information.

This particular edition is the seventh edition. This book is updated regularly and the seventh edition is already outdated. I have the eighth edition and it would not surprise me if there is a ninth edition. Before you purchase a particular edition you should verify which edition is the most current.

This book, like the others in the series, is enjoyable and educational for young and old alike. The artwork selected shows a variety of styles and the accomanying cartoons are very entertaining. Venezia gives simple insight into the painintgs to help kids connect the man with the art and creates a mini artist history lesson.

Bruckner's work is appreciative and critical -- sometimes too critical -- of a man who produced more type than anyone except Morris Benton. His account of Goudy's life and work is exhaustively researched and hightly opinionated, yet this is a marvelously entertaining book to read. It's also well-designed, as a series titled "Masters of American Design" should be. He gives many examples of Goudy's own typography, and reprints in full the examples of his type designs in "A Half-Century of Type Design and Typography." Thus far, this is the only book on Frederic Goudy. By all means, contact the publisher and demand a reprint.
