Peter Mc Daniel, and Tiger Woods have written a most interesting chronological history of African American contributions, participation and interest in the heretofore, White world of golf. This book contains beautiful photoghraphs reflecting the joy we all feel while playing golf. In the past golf was a reflection of our American society complete with all of the racial restricitions present in this major American past-time. This history of Blacks in golf will serve as the most needed light that must shine on the dark secret world of, "Whites Only" golf. Uneven Lies presents another side to this unfortunate period in our sporting history by graphically showing that Black People made significant direct and supporting contributions to this wonderful sport even uder the stress of racial segregation. Uneven Lies takes you From the Caddies, the Stanford White Club House at Shinnecock Hills Country Club, in South Hampton, New York, to the UGA, PGA and the LPGA tours. Had African Americans been encouraged and subsequently, allowed to freely participate, as much as they were detered from participating in golf, one would wonder how many Tiger Woods and Althea Gibsons would we have today. Fortunately, we have all learned from the past mistakes and the sport is moving in a positive direction. Uneven Lies is an exceptional, warm and engaing historic representation of the evolution of golf both socially, as a sport and metaphor for life's trials, tribulations and resolutions. A must read and a must see.

This book is perfect.I have read lots of book about golf but this one really gets what it's all about. Learning to play golf at the age of 55+ is a frightening undertaking. Strachan's book was funny, wise, and instructive. Most of all, it helped me remember that my goal is to have fun. Thanks, Peggy Strachan, for reminding me to not lose my cool and to keep my eye on the ball!! See you at the ladies' tees!

Excellent book on taking apart a 1980s era VW Golf and then putting it back together fully restored. Lots of helpful hints about evaluating a used Golf/Jetta to determine what needs to be done to restore it. Many helpful suggestions on what to look for during the 'taking apart' and 'putting back together' phases.

NOT For VR6 Models!

This book gives excellent details and descriptions on performing repairs, maintenance, and also has excellent safety, tool, and replacement part information to help the new mechanic famaliarize themself with the tricks of the trade. Excellent for young & old, and beginner & experienced owners. Also has handy conversion table. Be aware though, this book does NOT cover the VR6 engine! It's ONLY applicable to the 1.8T (Turbo 4-Cyl.), 1.9L TDI (Turbo Direct Injection Diesel 4-Cyl.), and the 2.0L (4-Cyl.), and NOT the 2.8L Narrow-Angle V6 engine. For those with a Jetta, this means it will not cover you for repairs on the engine in your GLX or GLS VR6. It is otherwise (even if you have a V6, the rest still applies) helpful for anything you could need really. I might recomend checking out the Chiltons, though their descriptions/directions can be kind of vague and hard to follow. Superb layout (fairly easy to find your way around), and excellent for routine, preventative maintenance if you want to keep your VW running smooth (and avoid costly repairs later on due to neglect).

When True Heroes Appear Forgotten -- Then What?
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-07
I was simply window shopping at Amazon.com and came upon one of my favorite books of all time. To my dismay, it appears, well, frankly as if we all abandoned this monumentally courageous man. Because of Casey Martin's decision (not an easy one) to take on The PGA in federal court (and won after a long legal battle) for the right to use a golf cart during competition (due to an extremely painful and disabling degenerative condition since birth), he paved the way for countless differently-abled to be included in our society from sea to shining sea. I know of no one personally who ever stood against a fierce firestorm-of-a- legal-battle (while trying to compete in golf) to show not only what is right but what a real man is. I still remember you and your story from this book, Casey Martin! And if America forgets the real heroes like yourself, then where in heck are we going? Oh right...the video store or movie theatre to see someone playing-the-hero, who is just a name-on-a-stage.
